JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

Variety reports that HBO is developing a limited series based on Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places. If that strikes a chord, you might remember that Dark Places was previously adapted into a film starring Charlize Theron. The film received mediocre reviews and only grossed $5.1 million upon its release in 2015, so it’s entirely understandable if you don’t remember it.
The logline of the novel, which was originally published in 2009, states: “Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in the famous 1985 ‘Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.’ She survived—and famously testified that her teenage brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, a pair of mother/daughter true crime ‘detectives’ locate a grownup Libby and pump her for details, believing that Ben is innocent. Libby, having spent her youth working the talk show circuit, hopes to once again turn a profit off her tragic history:...

Released by Neon, and now playing in theaters, Eileen, which we saw and really enjoyed at Sundance back in January, is a thriller set in In 1964 Massachusetts. It follows a young secretary, Eileen, played by Last Night in Soho breakout Thomasin McKenzie, who works at a prison. She becomes enchanted by Rebecca, (Anne Hathaway) the glamorous and liberated new counselor at the prison where she works. Their budding friendship soon takes a twisted turn when Rebecca reveals a dark secret.

To put it mildly, the Star Wars prequel trilogy was divisive. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was hyped up as the entry into the saga that would finally redeem the trilogy, as it would depict Anakin Skywalker’s seduction to the dark side and eventual transformation into Darth Vader. It was the first Star Wars movie to be given a PG-13 rating, as George Lucas and his crew promised that this was a much darker, more adult Star Wars tale than the rest of the prequel trilogy. Lucas was certainly right, with Revenge of the Sith ending the series on a dark, foreboding note, and to many, it remains a highlight of the prequel trilogy. Does that mean it ranks up there with the original films?
It’s hard to say because once you sit down and watch the whole thing, the prequel trilogy is very different from the originals.

If you were a movie fan hanging around in 1995 – hell, if you were just a living being – you can’t forget the summer of Species. Unapologetic in its cheesiness and sleaziness, it was a like a big-budget version of the movies Joe Bob Briggs used to show during his late night marathons on The Movie Channel. In other words, it was pure heaven. Gory and sexy in equal measure, it made a splash thanks to its irresistible premise – an alien-human hybrid mega babe screws guys to death while an eccentric group attempts to stop her before she bangs humanity into extinction. Yep, pure heaven. The movie made over $113 million at the worldwide box office; considering its $35 million budget,...

For a lot of us, Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Clones was a movie we were cautiously optimistic about. The dust had settled on The Phantom Menace by this point, and most of us chalked up the movie’s faults to two things – Jar Jar Binks and Anakin Skywalker being a precocious child. In the next film, Anakin would be a young man, similar in age to Mark Hamill when he played Luke in Star Wars: A New Hope. We all had high hopes that Hayden Christensen’s performance would be one of the definitive ones in the saga and that the film would brilliantly reveal Anakin’s dark side and what made him Darth Vader. However, it turned out to be a mixed bag, with Christensen’s performance controversial, George Lucas’s dialogue mocked, and the digital photography (it was one of the first films shot digitally) considered ruddy.

Halloween: Resurrection (watch it Here). The two words combined are enough to send chills down the spines of even the most hardcore movie fans. It causes trick-r-treaters to cross to the other side of the street; it’s the movie your parents warned you about. It’s the movie where this happens. To watch it is to wonder how, as in, How did we get here? From the terrifyingly simple 1978 classic to this silly, slapdash goof. It has its defenders, I think, but most of us agree that it lives near the bottom of...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was released in various film formats, the rarest being the IMAX 70mm print. There are reportedly only 30 screens worldwide showing the IMAX 70mm version of Oppenheimer, which has led fans to take lengthy road trips to be able to see it.
With televisions getting bigger and better, and some even opting for projectors, many folks can replicate a theatrical experience in the comfort of their own homes. Still, premium large formats like IMAX 70mm are something else entirely. Despite the small number of theaters screening Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm, a report from Variety states that those screenings account for $17 million of the movie’s box office take. One fan even made a 14-hour round-trip journey to catch a 2 pm screening in Providence, R.I. “It was definitely worth it,” he said.

It’s always interesting to learn the favourite movies of some of your favourite filmmakers; sometimes they’re exactly what you’d expect and other times… they’re not. While speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan was asked to name some of his favourite “remote drops,” meaning a movie you just have to watch when you stumble across it on television, and he responded with Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby.
“I mean, god, anything by [Stanley] Kubrick, you know? It’s a remote drop,” Christopher Nolan said. “And some of the great comedies too, I mean ‘Talladega Nights,’ I’m never gonna be able to switch that up.” When asked to confirm if Talladega Nights really was a Christopher Nolan remote drop movie, Nolan simply responded with a quote from the movie: “If you ain’t first, you’re last.“

As we all know, the first half of the 90s could often be a scary time for the horror genre. Of course, there were more than a few stand-outs, but for the most part the slasher overload of the 80s had made the general audience rather weary of the genre – it was left to the hardcore fanatics to seek out the real gems. Even horror’s superstars weren’t pulling in the public anymore, some of them seriously slumming it in movies that were practically made to be sent direct-to-video.

This week sees two new movies looking to take down the dual behemoths that are Barbie and Oppenheimer as the Seth Rogan produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and the Jason Statham sequel Meg 2: The Trench hit theaters. The simple fact is that no movie will remove Barbie from her perch atop the charts for a good while. I’d say probably not until at least Gran Turismo on the 25th, although there is no tracking for that movie yet. I don’t think Blue Beetle stands a chance at beating Barbie!
Second place could be a toss up, even with a sub 40% drop, Oppenheimer should finish around the $30 million mark while Mutant Mayhem is currently projected to do $30 million for its full five day release. However, Mutant Mayhem is getting phenomenal reviews Those types of reviews combined with how well family fare (with the exception of Ruby...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is the director’s first R-rated film in twenty years, but the film’s nudity hasn’t been accepted everywhere in the world. It’s been reported that Oppenheimer has been censored in several countries outside of the U.S.
The censored scene involves Florence Pugh’s Jean Tatlock as she speaks with Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer. In the original version of the scene, Pugh is naked, but she’s been given a CG black dress to cover her body.

It would seem for once the hype and anticipation was not overblown as the epic event known as Barbenheimer has come and is proving to be a massive success. Right now (Per Deadline) the box office is looking to have nearly $310 million in receipts, which would be the best weekend of the post-pandemic world and would be the fourth highest weekend in the history of the box office. This will also mark the first weekend where a movie opened to over $100 million with a second opening to over $50 million.

Audiences love a double feature, but the pairing of Barbie and Oppenheimer is something else altogether. The two films couldn’t be more different, but they’ve become the must-see match of the summer. It is finally here, the day audiences, and movie theaters, have been anticipating since it was announced these two films would go head to head. It all started when Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros parted ways after the release of his last film Tenet and the studios decision to release their entire 2021 catalog of films to their HBO Max streaming service. Nolan, a fervent supporter of the theatrical experience called out his long time studio saying “Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service.” What would result from the fallout would be a massive bidding war between all the major studios to secure Christopher Nolan and his next film, as Nolan films have become not just movies,...

Christopher Nolan has pulled off a lot of amazing things in his movies, but Oppenheimer features something he’s never attempted before on the big screen — a sex scene.
J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) has a steamy romance with Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh) before his marriage to Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt). Although Christopher Nolan didn’t shy away from the passion between the two characters, he admitted to Insider that he was “appropriately nervous” about filming his first sex scene for Oppenheimer. “Any time you’re challenging yourself to work in areas you haven’t worked in before, you should be appropriately nervous and appropriately careful and planned and prepared,” Nolan said.
Related Bob Odenkirk differs from Tom Cruise’s stance on promoting movies during strike, “Don’t! It’s a strike. Tough sh*t.”
Christopher Nolan was adamant that this aspect of Oppenheimer was included in the movie.

In 1978, the landscape of horror changed forever with the release of John Carpenter’s Halloween (watch it Here). Jumping off from a very simple premise, Carpenter crafted a vision of terror unlike anything that had been seen before. Though there were movies not unlike it prior to its release, Halloween’s success would inspire a brand new subgenre: the slasher film, and while there have been many imitations – not to mention sequels and remakes – few horror movies have achieved the kind of glowing praise and reverence that the original Halloween has. Not to mention the fact that it introduced us to one of the most infamous screen villains of all time, Michael Myers, the unstoppable killer without a conscience.

Major Spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Consider yourself warned. The latest installment of the long-running Transformers franchise is now playing in theaters, but the ending of Rise of the Beasts could shake up the series in a major way.
Related Weekend Box Office: Transformers wins the weekend with $60.5 Million
The ending of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts found Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) being offered a job with G.I. Joe, setting the stage for a major crossover between the two Hasbro properties. It’s something which has happened in comic-books, but fans were still surprised when it unfolded on the big-screen. Just how did the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover come to be? The ending of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts found Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) being offered a job with G.I. Joe, setting the stage for a major crossover between the two Hasbro properties. It’s something which has happened in comic-books, but fans were still surprised when it unfolded on the big-screen. Just how did the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover come to be? Turns out that director Steven Caple Jr. just included it in the draft, much to the surprise of the studio.

It truly is a battle at the box office this weekend as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse are in a virtual dead heat for first place with both currently forecasted to finish around $58 million (per Deadline). That total comes after Transformers posted $8.8 million in preview screenings on its way to what as of right now looks to be a $25 million Friday total.
The big question will be how good or bad word of mouth is for this seventh live action Transformers movie as reviews for the film are lukewarm with our own Eric Walkuski giving the film a 6/10 in his review while the audience score is currently at an 89%, which is pretty solid, especially when the last two Transformer films(BumbleBee and The Last Knight) only boasted 74% and 43% respectively.

In his review of the film, JoBlo’s Eric Walkuski admitted that while the film is a “touch better” than the Micheal Bay movies, it’s still “filled with contrivances and unnecessary clutter.

This weekend sees the release of the latest adventure in the Transformers franchise as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts hits theaters. The film is meant to reboot the series, yet still in the same universe as all previous films. As I understand it, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a sequel to Bumblebee which also makes it a prequel to the original five Michael Bay directed movies (Bay remains a producer on this new film.)
The Transformers franchise has seen it fair share of ups and downs, beginning in 2007 when the original big screen film hit theaters and opened with $70.5 million on its way to a $319.2 million domestic finish ($709.7 worldwide). 2009 saw Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hit screens with an opening weekend of $108.9 million and a $402.1 million domestic finish ($836.3 million worldwide.) In 2011, we got the final Shia Labeouf led Transformers film with Dark of the Moon that opened with $97.8 million...

With just a few days to go before the release of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Paramount Pictures has released the final trailer for the latest installment of the franchise.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts introduces new factions of Transformers, including the Maximals led by Optimus Primal and the Terrorcons led by Scourge. As you can see in the final trailer above, Rise of the Beasts also introduces Unicron, the planet-sized Transformer who devours entire worlds. The gigantic Transformer was first introduced in Transformers: The Movie back in 1986 where he was voiced by Orson Welles. This time around the character is voiced by Colman Domingo of Fear the Walking Dead.

It’s no secret that the early 90s are not viewed as a primo time for horror movies. Post-the slasher burnout of the ’80s, pre-the resurrection of the genre thanks to Scream, it was a time where only the truly faithful went to the theaters to indulge in their favorite genre. And yet, we were given some memorable flicks that you almost certainly wouldn’t see in theaters today. Movies like Leprechaun, Man’s Best Friend, Body Parts, all graced the big screen, while today they’d almost certainly be sent right to VOD – maybe unless they were produced by Jason Blum. Another title that one can’t even picture getting a theatrical release?...

Roman Polanski’s Chinatown is considered by many to be one of the greatest detective stories of all time. It’s widely viewed as one of the greatest films of the seventies, with it sporting one of star Jack Nicholson’s most iconic performances, with him playing hard-boiled private eye Jake Gittes. The film was nominated for eleven Oscars, and while it only won one for Robert Towne’s screenplay, its legend looms large. In fact, just recently, a book called The Big Goodbye by Sam Wasson was written about it and is considered a modern classic as far as books about Hollywood go. While director Roman Polanski is a controversial figure – to put it mildly – no one can deny the film’s power.

Nowadays, it seems as though the world is coming to an end every three to four months at the movies. This is mostly thanks to the preponderance of superheroes at the multiplex, where every villain has a plan to destroy our planet, if not every planet. But for a while there, the world coming to an end was a slightly more novel idea; it was usually left up to Bond villains to threaten humanity’s very existence.
In the 90s, however, the entertainment value of witnessing our own extermination started to pick up steam at the box office and the more memorable ones had civilization looking down the barrel of annihilation. You can probably credit Roland Emmerich for this. In 1996, his Independence Day reignited our passion for seeing large-scale alien-invasion-style mayhem inflicted upon the populous. If you’re one of the many people who went to see Cocaine Bear recently in theaters, you might have been confused by the title card that suggested the film was based on a true story. Indeed, there was a real cocaine bear. On September 11th, 1985, a drug smuggler named Andrew C. Thornton II was flying a load of cocaine from Columbia to the states and was forced to ditch his load over Knoxville, Tennessee, when his plane went down. Thornton died after jumping from the plane when his parachute failed to open (although the film gives a much more fanciful interpretation of what might have happened). Overall, more than 75 pounds of cocaine, with a street value of $20 million, had been ditched, and when the authorities went looking for the load, they found a dead black bear who had ingested much of the cocaine. The bear’s stomach was apparently...

Before we even knew there was such a thing as the ‘Cornetto Trilogy’, there was just…Shaun of the Dead, a remarkably fresh, funny and surprisingly sweet take on the zombie genre unlike any we had seen before. Along with Zack Snyder’s remake of Dawn of the Dead and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later – yeah, we know, not a real zombie movie – it helped reignite interest in the brainless ghouls known as zombies, and the undead are still rockin’ and rollin’ to this day.
Coming from the British trio of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Shaun was a continuation of sorts of the splendid U.K. comedy series Spaced, which was pretty much an unknown commodity at that point for most of us. How do you follow up an action classic? That had to be the question on director Renny Harlin’s mind when he signed up to direct Die Hard 2: Die Harder for 20th Century Fox and producers Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon. 1988’s Die Hard was a smash hit beyond anyone’s expectations. Overnight, it turned Bruce Willis, who was then a TV star on Moonlighting, into the next action icon. One movie was all it took to make him one of the three biggest action stars of the era. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis – they were the guys, and Die Hard was the movie responsible for launching Willis into superstardom. But how would they follow it up?

1967’s Bonnie and Clyde is considered one of the seminal American films. Known for its provocative use of graphic violence, it helped bring U.S. films closer in line with what was being done in Europe and is one of the films responsible for the MPAA starting a new rating system. It was so controversial that for a while, its home studio, Warner Bros, deemed it unreleasable and initially dumped it in a regional release, only for the film to become a favorite of the sixties counterculture, leading to its eventual wide release. While eventually an iconic hit that launched Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as superstars, not much attention has been paid over the years to how truthful it was about the two gangsters it idolizes, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. Were they romantic anti-heroes, as the film portrays them, or were they murderous bandits?

George A. Romero brought the world the first flesh-eating zombies in the 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead, then followed that up with Dawn of the Dead in 1978 and Day of the Dead in 1985. And with the new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?, we’re digging into the story of the making of Romero’s long-awaited fourth Dead movie. Check it out in the embed above!
Written and directed by Romero, Land of the Dead had the following synopsis: In a world where zombies form the majority of the population, the remaining humans build a feudal society away from the undead. In the 1980s, there was no comedic force in the movies quite like Eddie Murphy. Rising to fame as one of the most prominent members of Saturday Night Live when he was still in his early twenties, Murphy became a sensation thanks to his perfect comedic timing, his infectious laugh and smile, and his effortlessly cool screen presence. Some people just have the ‘It’ factor, and Eddie had it and then some, and 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop remain two of his signature vehicles.
While not every movie of his in the 80s was a winner (we’re talkin’ to you Best Defense and Harlem Nights), his track record was pretty darn impressive. And with all due respect to Coming to America and Trading Places, the two movies that best exemplify Murphy at the height of his charisma are 48 Hrs. and Beverly Hills Cop – the first one, obviously.

It’s safe to say a lot of lives were forever changed in 1987 with the release of Robocop, led by Peter Weller in the titular role and directed by auteur Paul Verhoeven. The deliciously violent film was praised as a weirdly humorous work of outsider art rooted in deeper meaning. Seriously, can you imagine a major studio releasing this now? It’s nearly impossible to fit the movie into a box: it’s a sci-fi action picture, a horror movie, a satire, a philosophical drama about what it means to be human. It’s a hard R even by today’s standards, and yet it also targeted kids with video games and action figure tie-ins. This movie had a Toy Line from Kenner! The 80s were a helluva time.

With only two movies under his belt and Nope on the horizon, Jordan Peele has proven himself to be one of the most fascinating voices within the horror genre. And if you had said that seven or eight years ago, most people would’ve thought you were crazy. But even when he was best known for the hilarious sketch comedy show Key and Peele, Jordan proved very capable of combining surreal dark humor with unnerving imagery.
Although we knew the man was very talented, it’s safe to say no one was quite prepared for the impact his debut feature, Get Out, would have, not just on horror fans, but the cinematic landscape at large. Socially relevant, morbidly funny, and consistently terrifying, the film became an instant classic upon its release, before culminating at the Academy Awards with four Oscar nominations and one win for Peele’s ingenious, layered screenplay.

During the production of Avatar: The Way of Water, the actors had plenty of underwater training, including learning how to hold their breath for minutes on end. When it comes to horror movie icons, Leatherface might be head (or face) and shoulders above the rest. What makes him stand apart from the likes of Freddy, Jason, Chucky, and other slashers is the fact that he’s just a human being. Nothing supernatural here — unless you count the startling amount of times he’s been rebooted, or how tangled the timeline of his mayhem has become. But now that the big boy has released yet another sequel into the world, it’s time to look back at the two main entries in the franchise — and apologies to those who hold the bonkers 1986 sequel near and dear to their hearts. I’m talking about the one that started it all, Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), which featured a handful of unknown actors and was produced on a shoe-string budget. Last week, we looked at Wtf Happened to the cast of A Christmas Story in a special yuletide edition of Wtf Happened to this Celebrity. This week, we’re digging back into Bob Clark’s 1983 classic, A Christmas Story, and looking into how the film itself got made in the first place. While many consider it one of the definitive holiday movies now, in 1983, it was a pretty modest film that came from a director best known for exploitation films, Bob Clark.
Indeed, the Canadian Bob Clark had already made one Christmas classic, 1974’s Black Christmas, which is widely regarded as the first classic-style slasher film, within having also made the most popular Canadian film of all time, 1981’s Porky’s. Yet, neither of those hard-r films would have you think Clark could make a gentle, PG-rated Christmas movie that would stand the test of time. Suffice it to say, he pulled it off,...
