Calling all toddler fashionistas! Victoria Beckham's daughter Harper Beckham is only three years old but already giving back to the community: The stylish tot's clothing went on sale at Mary Portas' Just Giving shop in Primrose Hill, and you better believe that those pint-sized frocks, tops, jackets and shoes sold quick. Within 40 minutes of the store opening, more than half of Harper's outfits had been snatched up—from a line of Beckham fans that began forming at 6 a.m. that morning. As a refresher, Beckham pledged to donate 25 pieces of her daughter's clothing to benefit Save The Children (in partnership with the Fashion Saves Lives sale). Sturgeon said: "I'm delighted to have been invited to speak at this year's Alternative MacTaggart.
"This will be an excellent opportunity to share my views on the future of Scottish Broadcasting, in front of the key people responsible for running our country's media organisations, and those creating content for our audiences."

John Cleese goes all Grace Jones on Alan Carr: Chatty Man tonight (May 23).
The Monty Python legend jokingly throws water, Taboo and nuts at the Channel 4 host in a rather difficult and wet interview for the comic.
After Alan Carr jokes that he is not able to take the Tube as it "shatters the illusion", Cleese chimed back that Carr doesn't have an illusion to begin with.
Cleese then proceeded to throw his glass of water at Carr, prompting laughs and cheers from the audience.
He then threw a glass of his red Taboo at the host, followed by a load of Bombay mix nuts.
"What is going on?!", Carr asked the audience as Cleese began throwing nuts at the host for about 30 seconds while answering his questions.
The audience then cheered as Carr had enough and dumped the bowl of nuts on top of Cleese's head, as well...

Mary Portas is launching a new series on Channel 4, which will involve her opening an employment agency for Over 65s.
Portas believes there is a business opportunity in tapping the resources of Britain's "overlooked and undervalued pensioners".
The press release from Channel states: "Many over 65s find themselves on the employment scrap heap simply because of their age. But that doesn't mean they've lost the skills and experience to cut it in the modern world, and if they ran their own business, they could work as long or as little as they liked."
Portas will encourage her "grey army", who can be aged from 65 to 105, to return to the workplace in anything from catering to building, childcare to beauty.
Currently under the working title Mary's Job for Life, the show will air on Channel 4 later this year.
Channel 4's commissioning editor Rich Evans said: "I can't wait...

Channel 4's Hotel Gb will reportedly not return for another series.
The reality show, which boasted an array of stars for its first run, is said to have been axed due to poor ratings.
Gordon Ramsay, Mary Portas, Gok Wan and Katie Piper all took part in last year's programme, where two celebrity teams staffed a hotel with unemployed trainees and battled it out to raise the most money for charity.
An insider told The Sun: "It was a good idea and bosses are glad they gave it a go.
"But it just didn't pull in enough viewers at the end of the day and it won't be coming back."
At the end of the show - which also starred Phil Spencer, Kim Woodburn and Kirstie Allsop - the 14 trainees who took part were all offered jobs by UK firms who visited the hotel undercover to seek out potential employees.

Hotel Gb came to a close on Friday night (October 5), with all the trainees securing at least one job offer. The Channel 4 series saw stars such as Gordon Ramsay, Mary Portas, Kirstie Allsopp and Gok Wan take over a hotel and staff it with unemployed people seeking an opportunity, while also raising money for the Prince's Trust and Springboard charities. Across the week, employers from a number of UK firms involved in the hotel and leisure industry visited undercover to test the workers' skills with a view to potential employment. During the live final, it was confirmed that all 14 trainees had been presented with jobs, while - as promised from the beginning - Ramsay and Portas also offered jobs to one person from each of their teams. Ramsay selected former cruise dancer and hostess Gun from Birmingham, (more)...

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Croydon yesterday (20.09.12). The heir to the British throne and his wife visited the area - part of Greater London - shortly after it had been stricken by riots in August last year, and this time returned to see the progress which has been made. The royals met with shopkeepers, local residents, and members of religious groups to talk about how their lives had been affected and the progress made in the last years. Charles and Duchess Camilla also met with businesswoman Mary Portas, who is working with Croydon Old Town, after it was named one of 12 Portas Pilot towns in England, and £100,000 in government funding has been pledged...

Mistaking whimsy for wisdom and hierarchy for help, we’ve let forced quirkiness create a ‘bored-geoisie’ that’s incapable of operating independently. And it’s ruining pubs too.
In this, an age of Happy-To-Help and Mary Portas and assisted shopping and assisted suicide, ‘help’ is a nightmarish obligation that we dare not refuse. We’re told what to do and how to do it and whatever we did beforehand is preceded by something vague, something tough, with enough machismo to make mundanity seem meaningful. Words like Mega, Ultra, Meta and Gastro tumble like gymnasts on to our laps and we make them do flips and bend their legs until they’re a twisted and futile banality.
The Gastro-pub is a product of such forced help and equally, a product of a middle-class magpieism that places façade on a pulpit and whimsy by its side. The two operate in cahoots, creating...

With Game and Gamestation now in administration, with half of the chain’s stores closed and the rest looking precariously perched on the edge of the precipice (bar a knight in shining armour coming to save them), and sometimes game retailer HMV remaining in financial trouble themselves, the gaming industry must look at itself to see what could have and can be done to preserve the high-street video gaming world. With the future seeing only Grainger Games as an ongoing “big name” in chain video game retailing (those guys deserve to survive as long as possible, incidentally), the high-street game buying experience is bound to massively change in the coming weeks and months, and the danger of that experience disappearing completely is a very real one at this stage.

A small independent cafe in London's West End, frequented by actors since 1965, is facing closure. Now it has become the subject of an A-list campaign to save it – and a focus for growing discontent over the homogenisation of the high street
From first-night parties to snacks grabbed on the way to rehearsal, one small cafe has served the actors, dancers and musicians of London's theatreland for nearly five decades with reliable congeniality. Hit shows have come and gone, stars risen and fallen, but the falafels at Gaby's Deli have remained a crowd-pleaser. Until this Christmas, however, when the future suddenly looked bleak for the West End institution, as a planning application was passed for its redevelopment as a chain restaurant.

It’s Pink List time again, and it’s been more exciting than ever because The Independent On Sunday, the British newspaper that compiles the list of the country’s 101 most influential Lgbt people, have, for the first time, invited people to send in nominations. These votes will then be considered by the judging panel, which features the likes of Diva magazine editor Jane Czyzselska, Conservative MP Margot James, Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas and Tamsin Omond, founder of the environmental campaign group Climate Rush.
Last year, there were 31 of our kind on the list, which is still quite a few steps from equality, but this was nine more than in 2009. So, by our reckoning, there should be at least 40 women on this year’s list.
Because we love a vote and writing lists, we’ve combined the two and we’ve written a list of the ten women that we would vote for.

Mary Portas has said that Cheryl Cole's styling during her spell in Los Angeles was "really wrong". The Mary Queen of Shops host told Heat that she was not a fan of the Girls Aloud singer's look during her recent stay in the Us. "That was really wrong, wasn't it?" Portas said. "There was that massive hair and then the tiny body. It was really just a wrong move." Portas also criticised the styling of female MPs and took issue with Kate Middleton's status as a fashion icon. Mary Portas has criticised female politicians, branding them an "ugly bunch". The retail guru said that she would want to restyle the women if she had to work with them as Prime Minister. Portas told Heat: "If I were Pm I'd bloody restyle all those women. I mean, the female cabinet, what an ugly bunch. I would restyle them. Do you know, I could not look at them. I couldn't look at them!
"I go in for meetings now and they do dress up for my meetings, but I just want to go, 'Pleeease. No. Not that necklace. Not that skirt'." She continued: "You look at French women and they're, like, wow, aren't they? (more)...

The story of the empire of King David is fundamental to the validity of the state of modern Israel. It was David who was supposed to have united Israel and Judah. An extensive archeological dig in the 50s and 60s supposedly provided verification. However, here, Dr Franscesca Stavrakopoulou questions whether those archeologists were digging "with a trowel in one hand and a Bible in the other" and examines more recent evidence that casts doubt on whether David presided over much of an empire at all. It will be an iron-willed viewer who doesn't switch this off or heave their television into the street after 10 seconds.

Hattie Jacques, the young lodger, and poor John Le Mesurier – what a Carry On
Mary Portas: Secret Shopper - were we left short-changed?
What do you do when you walk into your own bedroom to find your wife in the sack with the lodger? Well, obviously you pull him off (no, not like that!), beat the crap out of him and toss him out into the street, whimpering and naked. Then you storm out, find someone younger and more attractive than your wife, and jump into bed with her, in order to restore some self-esteem.
Poor John Le Mesurier, played by Robert Bathurst in Hattie (BBC4), does pretty much the opposite. "Oh, I'm terribly sorry," he stammers, when he finds his wife Hattie Jacques Carrying On with her handsome young driver. He probably knew about it already, but had been trying – like a child with his eyes squeezed tightly...

Mary Portas has said that she had to "reinvent" how shops sell for her new show. The former Mary Queen Of Shops star fronts new Channel 4 programme Mary Portas: Secret Shopper, which starts on Wednesday, January 19. Portas told Heat: "Normally, my shows have been me going into failing retail businesses, but this time it's me looking into it from the customer's point of view. Why more and more straight women are fantasising about lesbians. Plus, what's small and furry and looks like Karl Lagerfeld?
Where once there were fishnet stockings and cloudy-lensed pillow fights, now there are wistful feminine dreams of sharing shoes. Has the heterosexual man's lesbian fantasy been overtaken by the heterosexual woman's?
While The Kids Are All Right (the family comedy in which Julianne Moore and Annette Bening play a lesbian couple with two teenage kids) gathers excellent reviews, and celebrities such as Mary Portas, Jane Lynch, Alison Goldfrapp and Portia de Rossi are increasingly pictured looking blissfully happy beside their female partners, the image of the gay woman is finally going mainstream. Britain, therefore, is duly amending its fantasies.

Given Hollywood's terrible remake record, are fears about the forthcoming adaptation of this Swedish vampire original justified?
.
Everyone has their own favourite "bad remake" story. Some like the 1993 Sandra Bullock/Kiefer Sutherland remake of The Vanishing, which deserved to be retitled The Gormlessly Tacked-On Shovel Fight. Others preferred Roland Emmerich's 1998 Godzilla reboot, where all the post-Hiroshima nuclear paranoia was replaced by Jay Kay of Jamiroquai berking around in a silly hat on the soundtrack. Then there's the 2002 rehash of The Ring, where Samara climbs out of the TV set only to perform a razzle-dazzle version of I Am What I Am from La Cage aux Folles. The point is this: if you remake a foreign film into English, you're asking for trouble.
Which explains a lot of the apprehension surrounding Let Me In, the forthcoming Us adaptation of the acclaimed Swedish vampire movie Let The Right One In. The...

"Great LezBritian" is a fortnightly stroll through the very best of British lesbo-centric entertainment and culture. Plus there will be some jolly good interviews with the top ladies who are waving the flag for gay UK.
A couple of columns ago we wrote about the British women we wish were gay, which gave rise to much debate and informed us that our readers lust after and loathe Cheryl Cole in equal amounts. We decided that in this column we’d like to celebrate the British ladies we’re glad actually are gay or bisexual, which has been an unexpectedly tricky task.
Once again we sent out a Tweet asking you to suggest your favourite Britbians, and as the land that proffered Skins, Tipping the Velvet and Bad Girls, we were certain that Britain would have so many options that we’d be tossing second tier choices out of the list...

Just a few quick words about tonight's premiere of reality series Mary Queen of Shops on BBC America. The series, which features fashion expert Mary Portas as she attempts to pull back boutiques from the brink of insolvency, follows a rather similar formula to the network's own Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and Hotel Inspector, in which Gordon Ramsay and Ruth Watson respectively attempt to save failing restaurants and hotels, and Bravo's Tabatha's Salon Takeover, in which the snippy hairstylist saves sinking salons. Here, Mary Portas once again provides tough love to some rather misguided entrepreneurs who have opened up clothing boutiques without really having an understanding of fashion, visual merchandising, or how to turn a profit (or sometimes, all three) and who typically seem to lack business acumen in general. Like Ramsay and Watson before her, Portas is outspoken, brusque, and generally given to tell things like they are. She doesn't...
