With Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame being such box office successes, many fans assumed that the Russo Brothers (Anthony and Joe Russo) would return to direct Avengers: Secret Wars. But in the years that followed, a lot changed.
During that period, the Russo Brothers helmed a few flicks through their Agbo company. Among them are the crime drama Cherry, starring Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo, and the action thriller The Gray Man, featuring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.

Some people conjectured that the brothers might choose to return to Marvel following The Gray Man’s failure and Cherry’s comparatively unimpressive reception. Exclusive: J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the creator-EPs behind Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, have set up their 2017 Black List screenplay Escape with The Hideaway Entertainment (Cherry), tapping James Watkins to direct.
The action-adventure pic is inspired by the true story of convicts Robert Greenhill and Alexander Pearce, and their sensational journey of survival after escaping from prison, which scandalized the Victorian-era world. While the story has previously inspired songs, works of fiction and non-fiction, news articles, tall tales, art, illustrations and other printed materials, it has never before been adapted as a large-scale feature film.
When the wrongly-accused Greenhill is shipped to the harshest Tasmanian penal colony in the 1820s, he quickly realizes his only chance of survival is to partner with the notorious murderer Pearce and five other hardened criminals in order to escape.

Well this going to be the shortest review I ever write… Small Engine Repair is as close to perfection as it gets. 5 out of 5. Told you shortest review ever… Actually I need to dig deeper into the film!
Based on a play of the same name written by director and leading man John Pollono, Small Engine Repair tells the story of Frank (Pollono), Swaino (Bernthal) and Packie (Whigham). Three friends from small-town nowhere that have always been there for each other. We first meet our boys as Frank’s daughter Crystal (Ciara Bravo) has found out she is heading to university. One thing is for sure the love these men have for Crystal is unshakeable. After a night out to celebrate the bond between our boys becomes somewhat strained. We jump...

The darkly funny American indie drama “Small Engine Repair” works best when it’s a hangout comedy starring three schlubby New England burnouts.
Based on writer-director John Pollono’s stage play, “Small Engine Repair” eventually becomes an unpleasant slow-burning thriller about revenge, sexual violence and toxic masculinity. Thankfully Pollono and his fellow co-leads, Jon Bernthal and Shea Whigham, carry the movie throughout with some choice one-liners and abundant bromantic chemistry.
Pollono, Bernthal and Whigham keep things light, believable, and charming enough, even after the abrupt and seemingly random arrival of preppy drug dealer Chad threatens to ruin the movie’s otherwise aimless fun. Chad pushes “Small Engine Repair” into unexpectedly dark territory, the kind that invites comparisons with real-life sexual predators like Brett Kavanaugh and other prominent politicians. Pollono’s affable drama doesn’t say much about its characters’ boozy locker talk, but it does hold together well enough thanks...

"I wanted tonight to be special." Vertical Entertainment has released a full trailer for an indie film titled Small Engine Repair, a feature film adaptation of the stage play by John Pollono. This was originally set to premiere at last year's SXSW Film Festival before it was cancelled. Pollono writes and directs, making his feature directorial debut, and co-stars in it with an impressive cast. It's better to know as little about this story going into it. The seemingly casual reunion of three old friends at an out-of-the-way repair shop masks a hidden agenda fueled by the arrival of a privileged young yuppie. This is described as a "black comedy that takes a dark dramatic turn" - and oh boy does it take a turn. The trailer also features some very nice quotes from various other directors, including one from Edgar Wright. Starring Jon Bernthal, Shea Whigham, John Pollono, Jordana Spiro,...

Tom Holland seems like a really lovely chap. Outside playing Spider-Man in the MCU, the 24-year-old Brit is possibly best known for being unable to stop himself from leaking spoilers and his genuinely amazing performance of Rihanna’s ”Umbrella” during a lip sync battle.
From his breakout turn in The Impossible to his watery adventure with Chris Hemsworth in In The Heart of the Sea, Holland proved himself versatile and talented even before he put on the Spidey suit. Lately though Holland seems to be exploring his dark side and it fits him well.
Reuniting with his Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, Holland stars in Cherry, which is streaming now on Apple TV+. Tom Holland stars in the new film “Cherry” as an Army veteran who becomes addicted to opioids. It is the latest in Holland’s collaboration with Anthony and Joe Russo, directors of various films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Holland recently spoke with Gold Derby editor in chief Tom O’Neil and editor Rob Licuria about the challenges of taking on “Cherry,” how it required him to be vulnerable and the response he has received from those around him. Watch the exclusive webchat above and read the complete transcript below.

Gold Derby (Tom O’Neil): When we see you on screen, you’re normally saving people. In this movie, you are the person who needs to be saved. Talk about the irony, the challenges that you’ve taken on with this role.
Tom Holland: Firstly, thank you, that’s very kind of you.

Joe and Anthony Russo’s Cherry has its moments. But the film, an adaptation of Nico Walker’s hit 2018 novel of the same name, is, for the most part, a misfire and a missed opportunity. The Russo brothers, best known of late for helming a spate of Avengers epics — most recently 2019’s Endgame — bought the rights to Walker’s autobiographical bestseller within months of its release, for reasons anyone who’s familiar with the novel or its backstory can easily guess.

All of a sudden Tom Holland is everywhere. He’s got two movies out right now–the sci-fi thriller Chaos Walking and the drug/crime drama Cherry–and the latter is making its premiere on Apple TV+ this weekend after a limited run in theaters. He also recently wrapped production on the long-developing adaptation of the Uncharted video game franchise, and he’s currently working with director Jon Watts again on their third standalone Spider-Man adventure together, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In Cherry, based on the best-selling semi-autobiographical novel by Nico Walker, Holland stars as the title character, a young Cleveland man who joins the Army after his girlfriend (Ciara Bravo) announces she is going away to college. He returns home from Iraq with Ptsd, develops an opioid addiction, and eventually turns to bank robbery to support his habit.

Tom Holland brings his A-game to the true story of an army veteran drawn into a life of heroin addiction and bank robbery
The Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe, have become renowned for directing the epics of the Marvel Cinematic Universe; and now they take on the big, serious, operatically painful story of Cherry, about a US army medic played by Tom Holland who leaves the service in 2007 with Ptsd after witnessing horrors in Iraq. He acquires an opioid addiction that blossoms into a full-scale smack habit, miserably shared with his young wife Emily (Ciara Bravo), and finally finds a new trade in robbing banks, like a zombie wired on desperation. The Russos produce and direct, and screenwriters Angela Russo-Otstot and Jessica Goldberg have adapted the bestselling autobiographical novel by the decorated war veteran and ex-convict Nico Walker about his own desolate experiences in Civvy Street, robbing banks to feed his habit.

In Apple TV Plus’ new drama “Cherry,” Tom Holland’s life is spiraling out of control. Holland plays Cherry, a war veteran who suffers from Ptsd and descends into an opioid addiction. He also falls in love with Emily, played by Ciara Bravo.
Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel, who also shot “Da 5 Bloods,” explains the film “has very distinct chapters. Each one of those chapters has its vocabulary,” and Sigel relied on different lenses to create that look.
From magic realism, when Cherry sees Emily and falls in love, to documentary homages, Sigel discusses two scenes from the film and how he captured Cherry at different moments in his downward spiral.
Robbing the Bank/Emily
Early in the film, we have a teaser of what we will later learn is Cherry’s last robbery. In that robbery, he goes into a bank and as he approaches the teller and pulls a gun out.

Sony Pictures Classics is set to release awards contender The Father in select New York and Los Angeles theaters today before expanding nationwide March 12 before landing on PVOD on March 26. That’s quite a theater-to-digital journey for the Florian Zeller-directed drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman.
The film, which premiered at Sundance in 2020, is adapted from Zeller’s 2014 play which starred Frank Langella, who won a Tony Award his performance. Zeller and Christopher Hampton adapted the play which follows Anthony (Hopkins), a defiant 80-year-old man who lives alone and refuses the carers that his daughter, Anne (Colman), encouragingly introduces — and she needs the help. She can’t make daily visits to her father and his grip on reality is unraveling.
The Father marks Zeller feature directorial debut — and what a debut it is.
The film has received critical acclaim and received numerous Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations.

Composer Henry Jackman is known for fun Disney fare like “Wreck-It-Ralph” and “Big Hero 6” and dark Marvel epics like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War.” But he had never scored a film like “Cherry.”
Starring Tom Holland as an Iraq War veteran whose life spirals downward when he becomes addicted to opioids, “Cherry” was directed by Jackman’s old Marvel colleagues Joe and Anthony Russo. Jackman praises them for encouraging “art and creativity” without restrictions, although he also admits that, without a deadline, “I could easily have wandered off and spent two and a half years” on the project.
“There’s a lot of experimenting,” the London-born, classically trained composer explains. “I did things that were completely out of my comfort zone” which, he says, included everything from playing forgotten instruments in his garage to creating processed guitar sounds, using analog synthesizers from the ’80s,...

Joe and Anthony Russo went back home for their return to directing after guiding Avengers: Endgame to the biggest box office haul in history. That’s where they found Cherry, the Apple TV+ indie drama based on the novel by their fellow Cleveland native Nico Walker.
The book was based on Walker’s own experiences and, with the film, and Spider-Man‘s Tom Holland in the lead role, tells of one man’s arc from falling in love, to his time as an Army medic in the Afghanistan war, with his return and unchecked Ptsd leading to robbing banks, doing time and getting hooked on drugs.
The Russo brothers sparked to the book and the its subject matter especially regarding the opioid crisis, and its impact on their hometown. The book auction that they ultimately won via their Agbo banner in a $1 million deal was limited by Walker’s available...

Here’s a film whose behind-the-scenes (and one in “in front”) story may be just as, if not more, interesting as the plot. It addresses the ages-old battle between art and commerce, but it’s not to say that the two are always mutually exclusive. To put it a bit more clearly, this highlights the cinematic clashes between big-budget blockbusters and small gritty “indie” dramas. Also it offers a test for the “career trajectory” of filmmakers. And it’s not a new thing. After the box office explosion of Star Wars in 1977, George Lucas told the press that after producing the two follow-ups, his new directorial efforts would be personal “artistic” experiments. But when he got back in the director’s chair 22 years later he returned to that “galaxy far, far away” for the “prequel trilogy”. Similar thing happened a few years later with Peter Jackson, who talked up intimate...

In “Cherry,” Tom Holland sports a buzzcut, dead eyes, and a skeevy complexion. In a look-at-my-badass-self reversal from the effusive heroics of the “Spider-Man” films, he plays an Iraq War veteran turned opioid addict turned heroin addict turned bank robber, and he looks zoned-out and strung-out, like Eminem as a fallen Eagle Scout. He gets the cold sweats, he weeps real tears and talks in a phlegmy voice, he contorts his face into a pale mask of pain, and at one point he rubs the top of his noggin and says, “I have this noise in my head…why can’t it stop?” When his girlfriend, also a junkie, abandons him for a spell, he sits in his car and jabs a hypodermic needle into his thigh, over and over again, so that he’ll feel something.

Some of the roles that attract rising young performers wanting to be taken seriously as adult actors include a) traumatized combat veteran, b) suffering drug addict, and c) desperate bank robber, and “Cherry” gives Tom Holland the opportunity to play d) all of the above.
As a showcase for Holland, “Cherry” absolutely offers the chance to stretch and expand his talents to places that the “Spider-Man” franchise would never allow. Beyond that, however, this is a distressingly familiar tale of trauma and addiction that often plays like a cover version of older, better movies about war and drugs.
Fraternal filmmakers Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, coming off the worldwide success of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” obviously have the clout to write their own ticket, and they’ve opted to move in the opposite direction, making a film about life-sized human beings in everyday distress. Making their first non-Marvel feature since 2006’s You, Me and Dupree, the Russo brothers’ Cherry, adapted from Nico Walker’s 2018 roman à clef and starring Tom Holland, is a frenzied, ultimately overstuffed film that tackles—among a dozen other thematic interests—toxic masculinity, the opioid crisis, the Iraq War, Ptsd, and the prison-industrial complex. Highly structured and visually overwhelming, Cherry also attempts to synthesize competing genres—progressing through romance, war film, crime story, and ultimately addiction narrative—with uncontrollable velocity. Redeemed, in part, by Holland putting in the defining performance of his young career and nuanced support from Ciara Bravo as his girlfriend Emily, Cherry never pauses long enough to develop its competing preoccupations.

In the Russo Brothers’ new drama “Cherry,” Tom Holland portrays a young man who becomes addicted to opioids following a traumatic overseas tour of duty during the Iraq War. The character’s Ptsd is so significant he resorts to heroin, among other drugs, and his girlfriend Emily (Ciara Bravo) follows him down a very destructive path. During an interview earlier this week, the 24-year-old actor reveals that journalists have actually asked him if he’s taken heroin to prepare for the role.
