Zach Parrish knows a thing or two about what it takes to make a phenomenal work of animation. The director of the moving Disney short film "Us Again," Parrish recently served as the animation director on the upcoming Netflix animated epic, "The Sea Beast." The story of a swashbuckling monster hunter and his crew as they face down their most challenging adventure yet, "The Sea Beast" comes from director Chris Williams, who brought on Parrish to help bring the film to fruition.

The Sea Beast Animation Director Wants People To Know Animation Is A Medium, Not A Genre [Exclusive]
"The Sea Beast" animation director Zach Parrish is the latest and a most welcome addition to the growing coalition of animation lovers who would kindly like to remind the world that animation is a medium, not a genre that caters exclusively to kids or is limited solely to Disney movies. Yes, we here at /Film having been beating this drum again and again, but it's hard not to when even the various members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences seem to be resistant to this very basic...

Everybody gets old eventually, but Us Again writer-director Zach Parrish wants everyone to appreciate what they have in the moment. Parrish uses only dance, no spoken words, in this Disney animated short which has been shortlisted for the Best Animated Short Film category at the Oscars this year.
Us Again follows Art, an older man who has lost his sense of purpose and ignores his wife, Dot, when she tries to get him to leave the apartment and enjoy the day with her. He regrets the decision after she leaves, and walks onto the fire escape to see where she’s gone. Suddenly it begins to rain, and the rain makes him younger and gives him the confidence and ability to go out and dance with the love of his life once again.
Deadline: What was your inspiration for Us Again?

Historically, Disney have been in the business of making animation with the younger generation firmly in mind but this soft-shoe shuffle of a film - which is one of 15 on the Oscar shortlist - has got their nostalgic grandparents in its sights.
Made to accompany Raya And The Last Dragon, there's a spring in the step of Zach Parrish's wordless animation, a spring in every step of every person, in fact, except for one elderly gent, who refuses to be cheered up by his wife. The rain falling in his soul is soon washed away by a dose of the real stuff as, when he steps out on his balcony, the drops that fall on him transform him back to the dancer of his youth.
This transformation sparks a dance through the rain-slicked city streets with his wife, although what will happen when the shower is over? There's a real sense.

Time to go for a dance!! Disney has released a brief 30-sec trailer for their animated short film Us Again, which is now available to watch on Disney+. This 7-minute short originally premiered in front of theatrical showings of Raya and the Last Dragon, and was the first original theatrical short film produced by Disney since Inner Workings in 2016. It's both written and directed by Disney animator Zach Parrish, who also directed the Short Circuit film Puddles previously. Us Again is a magical short film set in New York City that plays like a wonderful companion piece to Pixar's Soul more than any other Disney movie. An elderly couple regain their youth in the rain, and chase each other around New York reliving magical moments. Featuring a score by Pinar Toprak. This is a really lovely trailer for a really lovely short film that features truly stunning animation. So beautiful.

The timing couldn’t be better for Disney Animation’s new musical dance short, “Us Again” (streaming Friday on Disney+ after screening theatrically in front of “Raya and the Last Dragon”). It’s about a biracial senior couple, Art and Dot, who become young again and dance the night away in the rain. It’s the perfect liberation from the pandemic and anticipates a trio of Lin-Manuel Miranda movie musicals coming this year along with Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story.”
But, for director Zach Parrish, “Us Again” grew out of a youthful yearning. “I thought of the pains of aging in my 30s and longing for his younger body,” he said. “I spoke to my mom, and she told me she’s still waiting to grow up in her 60s.” Then he recalled how his grandparents had two very different approaches to aging — his grandfather was a...

In the battle, for box office supremacy, Walt Disney Animation.s Big Hero 6 triumphed over Christopher Nolan.s trip through the galaxies. That.s to be expected, what with Big Hero 6 running almost half as long as Nolan.s epic . and benefitting from the 3D boost in numerous theaters. Still, a win is a win, and I.m sure the folks at Disney are celebrating, while also contemplating their next step in the Big Hero 6 franchise. Disney loves sequels. Heck, Pixar Animation Studios has multiple sequels in the pipeline, from Finding Dory to the recently announced Toy Story 4. Big Hero 6 doesn.t have a sequel on the docket. yet. But during a premiere screening at the Savannah Film Festival, Zach Parrish, the head of animation on Big Hero 6, hinted at a possible direction on a potential sequel, and we discuss that juicy reveal in...

It’S All About The Blink — Baymax sports a standard nine-frame-blink, says head of animation Zach Parrish. "We play with the speed of his blink throughout the film, but for the most part, it’s a standard blink. It’s the amount of time we give the audience to think before he blinks that says a lot — the longer it is, the more time he’s processing. A double blink shows confusion. We used that a few times in the film. That...
