Is your theater teacher the reason you decided to seriously pursue acting? Did they teach you that hard-to-nail monologue plus the entirety of “Les Misérable”? Show your appreciation by sending them to the Tonys to receive the annual Excellence in Theatre Education Award, presented by the prestigious award show and Carnegie Mellon University. Individuals worthy of this honor have “demonstrated monumental impact on the lives of students and who embodies the highest standards of the profession,” according to a statement. Last year, over 4,000 submissions from across the country yielded inaugural winner, Corey Mitchell, from the Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, N.C. Finalists will win a cash prize and be flown to New York City for the June 12 ceremony. The deadline to submit teachers is Feb. 29. Science fiction has long been a favorite genre for me in literature and film. At Texas A&M, I was a member of Cepheid Variable, a student group devoted to science fiction, fantasy, horror, science and technology. I first saw John Carpenter's cult classic Dark Star at a Cepheid Variable B-Movie Night, and Something Wicked This Way Comes as part of Cepheid's 1984 AggieCon, the largest student-run fan convention in the world.
My insatiable appetite for science fiction has me often yearning for more of it at local festivals, so I was ectastic to discover that Austin's first science fiction film festival, Other Worlds Austin, will be held at Galaxy Highland from Thursday, December 4 through Saturday, December 6. Even more exciting is that former Austin Film Festival programmer Bears Fonté is the fest's founder and director of programming. I've long been a fan of Fonté's programming and we share a passion for short films.

Fans of European horror movies – especially from the '70s and '80s – are probably on an intimate basis with the Italian rock band Goblin. Their most famous and memorable works include the scores for George Romero's epic Dawn of the Dead and Dario Argento's 1977 classic Suspiria – one of the loudest, weirdest and most terrifying film soundtracks ever created. While Goblin has been active in various incarnations since their foundation in the mid-'70s, and core member Claudio Simonetti has played their music at Us shows with his side project Daemonia, Goblin's original co-founders – Simonetti and Maurizio Guarini – have never performed together in North America. But that's all changing this October, when they bring the full Goblin lineup to perform the entire Suspiria score live at the first Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The brainchild of metal icon Phil Anselmo (Pantera) and bestselling true-crime author Corey Mitchell...

Austin is getting yet another genre film festival, this time courtesy of Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo. Gore fans, get ready for the inaugural Housecore Horror Film Festival, coming to Austin in October, 2013 with a really big name attached, the Austin Chronicle teases. The announcement came during the "Seeing Red: Aesthetics and Visuals of Metal" panel, courtesy of Bloody Disgusting stringer Corey Mitchell. The true crime writer announced that he and power metal icon Phil Anselmo (Pantera/Down/Stoner God) are prepping the underground horror fest for next year. After the panel, Mitchell (who is currently working with Anselmo on his autobiography) gave the Chronicle a few more details. He explained that the plan is not for this to be a rival to Fantastic Fest: Instead, it will be a small, intimate and very underground event at the Nd Austin on East Fifth.

It has been two years since Paramount Pictures started its “Demand It” viral marketing campaign that turned Oren Peli’s ultra low budget Paranormal Activity into an overnight success. And the series continues because, obvious monster profit margins aside, even after all the cleverly-manufactured hype, the movie was still particularly scary. Turns out there is something relatable and frightening about things that go bump in the night, and audiences (including me) responded to those bumps even when they were telegraphed by a slowing timestamp, an eerie stillness, a bass-y rumble, then Oh No Something Just Moved.
But Paranormal Activity 2 was essentially the same movie. Still scary-ish, but different only because of added camera angles and an expanded cast of potential victims. Audiences (again including me) showed up, maybe shrugging and saying “why not? I liked the first one,” and the cycle continues.
Now, with Paranormal Activity 3, I think...

Bloody Disgusting's Corey Mitchell, who has been blogging live from Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, is an well known hater of the Paranormal Activity franchise. To me that makes him the perfect person to review the third film in the franchise, Paranormal Activity 3, which opens in theaters October 21 from Paramount Pictures. If Mr. Mitchell could be swayed into liking the third film, there has to be something good about it, right? Directed by Catfish team Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, below you'll find the first ever review here on Bloody that he says "is breezy, smart, tense, and is sure to raise the hairs on the nape of your neck." I'm just excited to know the third film isn't just a repeat of scares like in PA2.
