Like an overcompressed MP3 of High Fidelity played on dollar-store headphones, Daniel Gill's Modern Life Is Rubbish mixes rock-'n'-roll fandom with the disappointments of real relationships and hits more than a few sour notes. The debut for director Gill and screenwriter Philip Gawthorne, the film is full of the signifiers of musical devotion but lacks the hummably acerbic insight of the best music it namechecks. Despite its polished production and pretty leads, the will-they/won't-they London-set romance will not storm the charts Stateside, and may even have trouble attracting attention on video.

It’s going on two years since Universal Pictures last posted a status report on the movie adaptation of Mark Millar and Sean Gordon Murphy’s Chrononauts, but today brings word of what is arguably the project’s most exciting development yet.
Deadline has the scoop, confirming that playwright and screenwriter Philip Gawthorne (Kojak, Cube) has now signed on to adapt the graphic novel for Universal. Chris Morgan of The Fast and the Furious fame will help produce the feature film, which chronicles a “time-traveling adventure that follows two fun-loving, scientific geniuses (Corbin Quinn and Danny Reilly) as they embark on the world’s first time-travel experiment.”
Sean Gordon Murphy and Mark Millar are also on board to produce, which ought to ensure a fairly faithful adaptation. And though Chrononauts is still simmering in the formative stages of development, the latter took to Twitter to share his dream casting: Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth.

Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. While it's not a surprise that Universal is eager to see if they make Vin Diesel's "Fast & Furious" money printing magic happen in other movies, history suggests audiences don't always follow the actor to other films that don't involve him driving a car. But $1.5 billion in bank for "Furious 7" ain't nothing to sneeze at, and Universal hopes to mount another franchise around Diesel. Read More: Box Office: 'Furious 7' Hits $1.15 Billion A few years back it was announced that "Skyfall" writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade were going to put their pens to a big screen version of the classic TV series "Kojak." And things have been quiet since, but the project has new forward momentum with Variety reporting that Philip Gawthorne ("EastEnders," "Waterloo Road") hired to take a new crack at the screenplay. Basically, development continues, but we'll see if all the pieces come together for this.

The idea of Vin Diesel inheriting Telly Savalas’s iconic role as Lt. Theo Kojak fills us with both the idea of intriguing possibilities and the nagging image of Kojak saying “Who loves ya, baby?” while enjoying a lollipop as a car careers off a rooftop. Still the one-man movie machine remains committed to taking it on, and has writer Philip Gawthorne working on a new draft of the script.Universal – which we imagine will indulge almost any whim of Vin’s these days given the potent box office for Fast & Furious 7 – is backing the project which at one point the actor (according to his Facebook page) wanted Ang Lee to direct. We’re not there by a long stretch, but development is continuing, with playwright and EastEnders/Casualty veteran Gawthorne scoring job after job in Hollywood. He’s already at work on the Cube remake for Lionsgate and...

Who loves ya, baby? If by baby we mean any of you still waiting for the Vin Diesel Kojak movie, then the answer is Universal Pictures. The studio has put the TV adaptation back on track with a new writer attached. According to Deadline, the next draft will be penned by English playwright Philip Gawthorne, who hasn't really done anything for Hollywood yet, though he's working on a Cube remake for Lionsgate. He also has a feature adaptation of his award-winning stagework Modern Life is Rubbish in the works. Gawthorne will have to do what a couple of James Bond staples, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, couldn't over the course of two years. The writing duo, who worked on Skyfall, Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale, Die Another...

As I said when this was first announced 3 years ago, they could just create an entirely new crime drama project for Vin Diesel to star in; but, no, it has to be based on an already existing work, if only because there's an already existing fan base for it, and they hope that Diesel's popularity will also attract new, younger audiences who may have never watched a single episode of the original TV series - believed by some to be one of the greatest TV shows of all time! Since there really hasn't been any news on the project in the 3 years after it was made public, I was actually hoping it was dead and buried. Apparently, not so. Deadline is reporting that Philip Gawthorne has been hired to...

You can’t blame Hollywood for being hot on Vin Diesel right now – the actor is a killer box-office draw whose last two films, Furious 7 and Guardians of the Galaxy, were box office smashes. Just recently, Lionsgate made moves to secure Diesel for a new franchise that will kick off with this fall’s The Last Witch Hunter, and now Universal is doubling down on the star as well, recruiting scribe Philip Gawthorne to pen an adaptation of the TV series Kojak for Diesel to star in.
The original series aired from 1973 to 1978 on CBS and starred Telly Savalas as New York City Police Department Detective Lieutenant Theo Kojak. The character, a tough but honest cop with a cynical streak, was known for his love of Tootsie Roll Pops and for the catchphrase, “Who loves ya, baby?”
Gawthorne will be building a franchise around the character, who will be played by Diesel.

It contained 17,576 rooms filled with life-ending obstacles. The titular object in Vincenzo Natali's 1997 thriller, Cube, foreshadowed the psychological and physical torment of the Saw traps to come. If you were unlucky enough to wake up inside it, you were going to have one hell of a time trying to get out. Lionsgate, however, is willingly returning to the cube's confines. The thriller Cube is an ingenious film, that uses a single location setting in clever ways, cranking up the tension as the story progresses. Released in 1997, the low budget hit was followed by a sequel and a prequel, neither of which matched the majesty of the original.
So now, we're getting a remake.
Going by the name of Cubed, the new film is to be directed by newcomer Saman Kesh (who has come to prominence due to his acclaimed short film, Controller), with the screenplay this time around from Philip Gawthorne. Roy Lee and John Spaihts are set to produce the film.
We don't have a release date for Cubed yet, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it in cinemas next year. More on the project as we hear it, as always.
