Film and TV studio Fifth Season has secured international distribution rights to “Monsieur Spade,” the crime drama series starring and executive produced by Clive Owen.
Fifth Season will represent the title at the upcoming Berlin European Film Market.
The six-episode series is based on Dashiell Hammett’s hard-boiled private detective Sam Spade, the protagonist of 1930 novel “The Maltese Falcon,” adapted several times for the screen, most notably in 1941 by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart as the sleuth.
In the series, the year is 1963, and legendary detective Spade (Owen) is enjoying retirement in the South of France. Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet, but the rumoured return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered, and as the town grieves, secrets emerge and new leads are established. Spade learns the murders are connected to a mysterious child, who is believed to possess great powers.

All works of IP exploitation are, on some level, legitimized fanfiction. Once divorced from the original author, the line that separates a franchise’s sequel, prequel or reboot from the average post on Wattpad is a great deal of money and the blessing of an estate and/or corporation. But even with this baseline, the AMC limited series “Monsieur Spade” is an especially unabashed act of wish fulfillment through and for a beloved protagonist. The namesake of “Monsieur Spade” is none other than Sam Spade (Clive Owen), the private investigator who headlined the Dashiell Hammett novel turned John Huston film noir “The Maltese Falcon,” plus a handful of Hammett short stories published in the 1930s. For their spin on Spade, series creators Tom Fontana (“Oz”) and Scott Frank (“The Queen’s Gambit”) send the sleuth to the south of France, where he spends a few weeks of his not-so-peaceful retirement looking...

For a character who is at the center of one full-length story, The Maltese Falcon, Sam Spade is as iconic as it gets in the world of detective fiction. Dashiell Hammett’s book, and John Huston’s 1941 movie adaptation with Humphrey Bogart, loom impossibly large over the gumshoe genre, to the point where Spade is just as famous as Philip Marlowe and Mike Hammer, who have appeared in far more novels and films over the years.

If you’re on any form of social media, you probably know that on January 1, an early incarnation of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain. This prompted the usual memes putting the beloved character in decidedly adult situations and, in just a few months, we’ll be treated to a Mickey Mouse slasher film.
For a different, more pastoral, approach to elevated fan fic — this one conducted with the approval of the Dashiell Hammett Estate, rather than public domain — look to six-episode limited series Monsieur Spade, which will roll out on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn TV.
Hailing from the powerhouse creative duo of Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit) and Tom Fontana (Oz) and boasting a likably droll central turn by Clive Owen, Monsieur Spade takes Hammett’s Sam Spade and drops him into a bucolic retirement in the South of France. There, rather than reconfiguring the protagonist for an ironic excursion to the dark side,...

The James Bond-esque opening sequence of Monsieur Spade sees a glimmering 1950s whip winding down a spectacular country road in the south of France. Inside the car is Sam Spade (Clive Owen) and a doe-eyed young girl, Teresa (Ella Feraud), whom the legendary detective, first introduced in Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, is trying to reunite with her father. When plans go awry and the pair end up stranded, they’re rescued by a glamorous French woman named Gabrielle (Chiara Mastroianni). She, we learn, will become Spade’s wife.
Flash forward eight years and Spade is a broken-hearted widower overseeing Gabrielle’s estate near the town of Bozouls, and he’s placed the teenaged Teresa (now played by Cara Bossom) in a local convent. But what led Spade to a remote town in France with the young girl in the first place? And what occurred in the subsequent eight...

From the moment that Thomas Salvador’s The Mountain opens on robotic engineer Pierre (Salvador) standing in his modern Paris apartment sipping a morning espresso, we understand him to be a man unmoored. At work, as his attention trails off in the midst of a presentation, he seems every bit as lost as the stray deer that he later notices roaming the empty streets of a mountainside town. Throughout the film, Pierre will often stare off into the distance, as if looking for something—but good luck figuring out what that actually is.
The Mountain tracks Pierre’s day-to-day life of self-isolation with dry precision after he travels into the Alps for his work and decides to turn his back on his life in the city for good. But whatever motivation underpins his decision is as nebulous as the clouds over the mountains, as Salvador frustratingly never offers a concrete...

Un Métier sérieux
Production on Thomas Lilti‘s fifth feature commenced back in February of ’22 in Normandy with a formidable comprised of Vincent Lacoste, François Cluzet, Louise Bourgoin, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Lucie Zhang, William Lebghil and Bouli Lanners. Having built his filmography around worlds with white coats or institution-themed films, it comes as no surprise that Un Métier sérieux (aka A Real Job) features a dramedy that revolves around the notion of training for the next level. Our money is on the cast here.

From Brazilian oil-rig workers to a German U-boat crew, from a Chinese concubine to a Spanish spy in Ava Gardner’s home, international TV has served up some memorable characters this year. Variety’s international correspondents take a trip around the world and pick a dozen buzzed-about shows — some of which can be seen soon on Hulu, Amazon Prime and HBO. As for the others — paging Netflix!

Following a group of oil workers, “Iron Island” was a big-ticket action drama for Brazilian powerhouse Globo, which went all out on the series’ VFX. I vividly remember watching Mad Men for the first time during my junior year of college, struck by the way Matthew Weiner crafted a series that was cinematic and rich in detail, dialogue, and characters. Since its finale in 2015, I’ve been searching for a series that struck the same chord with me. Enter: The Romanoffs, the new Amazon Prime series from Matthew Weiner. Its premiere was a long time coming, with news, expansive cast announcements, and speculation circulating for years. Would Weiner capture lightning in a bottle again?
As it turns out, The Romanoffs is an anthology series, where each episode presents a new story about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the slaughtered Romanov family. Based off the first two episodes, it’ll be a globe-trotting series, bouncing across countries, and continents...

The cast of The Romanoffs talks the first two installments in the anthology series.
Matthew Weiner’s long-awaited follow-up to Mad Men, The Romanoffs, is finally streaming on Amazon. The pricey project–estimated to cost upwards of $50 million for eight episodes–is an ambitious, globe-spanning anthology series that follows descendents of the Russian royal family, The Romanovs. The spelling of the titled is intentional, meant to reflect the pronunciation and how it was spelled up until recently.
Amazon released episode one and two on Oct. 12 (you can read our review here), with subsequent episodes releasing every Friday thereafter. Each episode is a self-contained story with the look and feel of an indie film. As he did with Mad Men, Weiner included a long list of spoilers that critics are not allowed to share. Amazon's anthology series from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner comes up short of its royal ambitions.
Amazon is planning on spending $8 billion on original content this year, a billion more than rival Netflix. The two streaming giants are in an arms race, each sweeping up reliable TV content creators like Shonda Rhimes, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and Ryan Murphy to bolster libraries already bursting with titles. The guiding philosophy here seems to be that if you have the means, you might as well shell out. It’s a win-win for both the platforms and the artists; Netflix and Amazon get the highly anticipated new works from some of television’s brightest minds and the creators get to execute their vision with little to no creative or budgetary oversight. The only party that may end up losing is the viewer, now more likely to suffer through self-indulgent series when there are no constraints.

One of the key characteristics that distinguished Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men from its prestige-drama peers was that it was serialized, but focused first and foremost on making each episode its own beautiful, handcrafted work of art. Instead of a novel for television, it was a short-story collection set in the same TV universe. The best stories, like “The Suitcase” (Don and Peggy bond during a long night at work), benefited from our collective knowledge of the characters, but many installments could function as gorgeous standalones for the sake of...

They’re back: Matthew Weiner’s laundry lists of forbidden plot points. In the days of “Mad Men,” screeners for each new season, half-season, or episode came with a laundry list of spoilers critics could not include under penalty of death, and similar letters have become so prevalent they’re now parodied by other creators. With “The Romanoffs,” those special requests have resumed. However, this review of “The Romanoffs” is relatively brief for reasons that have nothing to do with censorship: The first two episodes of Weiner’s Amazon Prime series are a serious disappointment. There’s not enough to spoil beyond the show’s many, many missteps.

“You’d think that royal blood dilutes over time, but the poison survives,” says Radha Mitchell’s character in the new trailer for Matthew Weiner’s forthcoming Amazon Prime anthology, The Romanoffs. The new series — the first anthology for the streaming service — features eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the titular royal family.
We received a tease to the series last month, but the new trailer pulls the curtain back a little more, showing us the army of characters in the anthology who all claim they are a Romanoff. Some of them relish in the fact that they come from royal blood, while others find it problematic. “There are so many people out there with your background and I guess they’re proud, but they’re really f*cked up,” Kerry Bishe’s character tells Corey Stoll.
