Grimmfest keep on delivering the goods despite a worldwide pandemic. Their latest treat comes along with the May Bank Holiday and includes Cody Calahan’s latest movie Vicious Fun.
Set in the eighties, the crazy story has us follow a horror movie journalist (instantly relatable to a big chunk of this films audience!) who somehow ends up in a self-help group for serial killers. When his attempts at blending in don’t go to plan he has to work out a way to survive… I’m glad the word fun is in the title of this movie. It is often something that people seem to think is a less than positive way of describing films. But I love films that are fun and it is a perfect description here.

There’s no denying that Vicious Fun is slickly made; bathed and birthed in a whole heap of stylish neons, from a synthy score to a quirky but quickly meaningless ’80s period setting. It’s gorgeous to look at, delves out plenty of practical gore, and happily lives up to the edgy fun and games the title promises. A decent enough addition to any late night genre slot, for sure. But at the same time, not one that’s particularly consistent, or all that memorable either.
The plot might say otherwise – a self-confessed loser finding himself well-and-truly in the lions den, when he blacks out and wakes up in the middle of a self-help group for larger-than-life serial killers. It’s a witty spin on slasher movies that’s probably ten years too late to really have any impact, but at least makes for an amusing set-up. And with a...

Tagline: "Blood, Murder and Self-help." Vicious Fun is the latest title from Black Fawn Films. A Cody Calahan (The Oak Room) feature, Vicious Fun follows Joel, who accidentally stumbles into a self-help group for serial killers. Can he survive the night? Co-written by James Villeneuve, this feature stars: Evan Marsh ("Northern Rescue"), Amber Goldfarb, Ari Millen and Julian Richings. A trailer was just released for this feature and can be found below. The trailer shows a hitchhiker and a strange driver. Set in 1983, Joel then walks into the self-help meeting, where killers can hardly keep their murderous urges under control. Joel seeks help from the authorities, but only the killers are interested in his story. Vicious Fun will show at this year's Sitges Film Festival, later this month. Held in Spain every year, this prestigious film festival will host one of Canada's best indie features. To show as part of the Panorama Fantastic section,...

Turner Latin America’s new English-language film label Particular Crowd has kicked off its partnership with Canadian shingles Breakthrough Entertainment and Black Fawn Films with horror-comedy “Vicious Fun,” now in post.
“An outrageous mash-up of dread and humor, ‘Vicious Fun’ lives up to its title,” said Craig McGillivray, Breakthrough Entertainment’s VP of distribution. “We are thrilled to have Turner Latin America’s new movie banner, Particular Crowd, as a partner on this film, and look forward to sharing the howls and horrors we’ve created together,” he added.
“Vicious Fun” tracks Joel, a mordant 1980s film critic for a national horror magazine, who finds himself ensnared in a self-help group for serial killers. To avoid becoming the next victim, Joel tries to blend in with the murderous pack.

"I don't understand your hip hop numbers!" Gravitas Ventures has released a final trailer for indie comedy Appiness, which is arriving on VOD this month. The film is the directorial debut of a Canadian composer-actor-writer named Eli Batalion, who also stars in & produces this in addition to writing & directing. When Eric and Raj, old high school buds, try to build the next great app and become billionaires - they don't. Their app is called "Connect2U" but this seems to be more of a goofy comedy about how making an app isn't such a good idea. Starring Eli Batalion, Varun Saranga, Amber Goldfarb, Mike Paterson, Susan Bain, Kathleen Stavert, and Derek Johns. No surprise, this doesn't seem like it's really worth anyone's time. Here's the final Us trailer (+ intl. trailer / poster) for Eli Batalion's Appiness, from Gravitas' YouTube: When Eric Newman, a shy corporate professional on the cusp of his 30's,...

Sid, born male, has always known she was a woman, but never took the step of dressing like one in public until making this important decision. As fate would have it, at the same time that Sid is planning for her new future and taking steps towards living her life fully as a woman, she meets Ralph (Jamie Meyers), a teenaged boy who, when confronted by Sid as to why he’s hanging around her suddenly, reveals that Sid is his father – Sid was involved, briefly, with Ralph’s mother (Amber Goldfarb), and Ralph, it seems, was the result.

Review Billy Grifter 31 Mar 2014 - 13:30
The Helix season 1 finale is a narrative lasagne layered with confusion and idiocy, says Billy...
This review contains spoilers.
1.13 Dans L'Ombre
It has been 48 hours since I watched Dans L'ombre, and I intentionally gave myself a cooling off time, before writing this. I can’t hold back any longer, this was a huge rebuff to anyone who was crazy enough to stick with this painfully irrational show.
What was obvious as I was watching it, and confirmed afterwards, was that Helix has a second season, and the writers knew this when they penned an abysmal ending to this one. Having created some narrative and tension about how things would end in the Arctic base, it was all blown up (literally and a narratively) like it’s been obvious it would be from the pilot onwards.
How this came about was stupid in the extreme,...

Being Human Season 2, Episode 11 “Don’t Fear the Scott” Air Date: 3/26/12
The mantra of this week’s Being Human is that “time heals all wounds,” a cliché warped by the presence of vampires, werewolves and ghosts, and as something that is revealed as not true through the events of another hour of great TV.
Aidan and Suren, in love and proud of their work in ridding Boston of the orphans, nervously prepare for Mother’s (Deena Aziz) imminent arrival. Josh and Julia, newly love birds (again), take it slow after a “guy stole [Josh’s] penis,” to consummate it, because they’re worried about diving all in after how damaged they were before. Plus, Julia doesn’t want to go to his place because Aidan called her a slut and she hates his guts. That and the house is haunted, probably smells and looks like it’s on a shady side of town,...

Just what purpose does the Georgia Guidestones serve? To the people who have been to Elbert County in the state of Georgia to see them, what exists there are six granite slabs with inscriptions. Writer and director Jay Ferguson has observed that the writing inscribed on them is very prescriptive. His web series, "Guidestones," will explore possible answers in a 50-episode run.
“They really do seem to offer advice for a 'future' civilization,” says this director. "Perhaps these 'commandments' have come from what the builders presume to be good practices in past civilization building?”
Each episode will have a varying run time from a minute to five each, and, depending on what viewers choose to receive to view, get offered tantalizing clues of the 'truth.' In order to erect this megalithic structure, great planning, labour and cost were required. This series will offer a new delivery device...

It isn't because you make a co-production that you necessarily get the best out of Chinese expertise in making martial art films. Speaking about quality, Wushu Warrior looks like an awful made-for-tv film.
The story takes place in China during the 19th century. Lord Lindsay (Matt Frewer), a British merchant and also a drug trafficker, intends to bring opium in China by ship. However, because Rev. Elders (Matthew Bloomfield) is an outspoken critic of Lord Lindsay, he's killed. Hopefully, with the help of Rev. Elders' Chinese friends, his son, Jonathan, is taken to a safe village.
Once there, Jonathan will be taught Wushu. After many years of training, Jonathan embarks on a journey to avenge the death of his father and to put an end to Lord Lindsay's drug business.
After Yves Simoneau's L'appât, Quebec's cinema is also trying to satisfy us with another action film. Just like L'appât,...
