Predator’s journey from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic 1987 sci-fi action film to a successful Hollywood franchise has been remarkable. Dan Trachtenberg’s 2022 Oscar-nominated installment, Prey, starring Amber Midthunder, has been considered one of the franchise’s best films from its inception, and its success quickly led to the announcement of a sequel.

A new standalone “Predator” movie is in the works at 20th Century Studios, with filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg set to direct.
Plot details for “Badlands,” which will be set in the future, are currently under wraps, but the film will begin production this year.
Trachtenberg landed an Emmy nomination for his 2022 “Predator” prequel “Prey,” which follows a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation named Naru (Amber Midthunder) as she sets out to protect her people from a mysterious danger threatening their camp.
Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman reviewed the film positively in the scope of the franchise, writing, “As an alien-attack thriller, ‘Prey’ is competent and well-paced, though with little in the way of surprise. But the journey of Naru lends it a semblance of emotional coherence that most of the ‘Predator’ films have lacked.”

The Predator franchise gets a stealth prequel in the shape of this smartly written sci-fi thriller that has the dreadlocked alien super-hunter under-estimating a worthy new opponent. In terms of sequels, Prey is comfortably the best Predator film since the 1987 original, though admittedly, that’s not a particularly high bar to clear.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (whose franchise-tweaking credentials were previously showcased in 10 Cloverfield Lane), Prey is set in 1719, on the Great Plains, where young Comanche tribeswoman Naru (Amber Midthunder) is desperate to become a warrior, fighting alongside her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers). She finally gets her chance when she’s invited to participate in the ritual of kühtaamia and hunt and kill a vicious animal, before...

Last year, "Prey" totally knocked our socks off as the best movie in the "Predator" franchise since the original 1987 action flick starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and the incredible make-up effects of Stan Winston. Set further in the past than any other "Predator" movie before, "Prey" had the unique challenge of giving the new "Feral Predator" technology that harkened back to the defining traits of the alien hunter's signature gear and creating technology that felt different without being nerfed, so as not to give our Comanche hero Naru (Amber Midthunder) an easy way out. But director Dan Trachtenberg and creature designer Michael Vincent succeeded, and we got an amazing new addition to the Predator roster.

20th Century Studios deserves recognition for listening to fan demand, as not only has Prey received a physical media release — virtually unheard of for a Hulu original — but it’s an impressive one. Not only does it carry exclusive extras, but there are 4K Uhd and Steelbook options to boot. (Hopefully we can convince them to do Hellraiser next!)
An audio commentary with writer-director Dan Trachtenberg, star Amber Midthunder, director of photography Jeff Cutter, and editor Angela M. Catanzaro is included alongside a making-of featurette, a FYC panel with cast and crew, and more.
Here are eight things I learned from the Prey commentary…
1. The Predator originally infiltrated the 20th Century Studios logo.
The 20th Century Studios opening title card originally featured Predator’s laser target and the logo went invisible like the creature’s cloaking mechanism as the fanfare dropped out.

In 2022, "Prey" rejuvenated the long-suffering Predator franchise, becoming the best-reviewed in the series since the original all the way back in 1987. Set in the Comanche Nation around 300 years prior to the first "Predator," the film follows Naru (Amber Midthunder) as she battles a Yautja in the forests of the Great Plains in which she was raised. And frankly, it made for one hell of a hunter vs. hunter showdown.
Following decades of lackluster and often abject "Predator" movies, director Dan Trachtenberg delivered a fresh take on the source material with "Prey." This time, the technically advanced extraterrestrial faced off against a warrior armed merely with a hatchet and a comprehensive knowledge of her homeland's topography. Its tense action and visceral tone made the film a hit when it debuted on Hulu. But there was one action sequence that, as Trachtenberg told /Film at the time, never made it into the final cut.

Some folks like to talk about physical media as if it's on its deathbed. To be fair, it can often seem that way. But I've been hearing about the death of physical media for what feels like over a decade now, and yet, it continues on! Case in point: "Prey," a movie that got dumped onto Hulu instead of getting the theatrical release it deserved, is now on 4K Blu-ray. That's kind of a big deal, folks, and it shows that studios — like Disney — are still willing to give physical media a shot in the arm from time to time. "Prey" is just one title waiting for you below, along with one of the best movies of the year, the latest from Pixar, and two recent horror titles just in time for spooky season. So let's get to it, and remember to keep spinning those discs.

A huge streaming hit for Hulu last year, Dan Trachtenberg’s Emmy-nominated horror movie Prey is now available on 4K and Blu-ray, and this week 20th Century Home Entertainment has released a Deleted Scene that’s included in the physical release’s bonus features package.
The deleted scene is titled “Treetop Chase,” and indeed it spotlights an intense sequence wherein the Predator chases hero character Naru across the treetops. This sequence never made it into the movie, and all that exists is a rough pre-visualization of the concept.
Trachtenberg tells Polygon, “The pre-vis sequence… I was so stoked on. But I was worried about [the treetop chase] being too fancy for the movie. And we really had to nail the execution for it to not feel goofy when so much of the movie and its action is quite grounded. As excited as I was for that kind of physicality, of Naru and...

Action franchises tend to go bigger with every new installment, and "Predator" is no exception. Where the original 1987 film pits a small group of sweat-soaked paramilitaries against a Predator (aka. Yautja) in a dense South American jungle, its first two sequels expand the setting to a dystopian version of Los Angeles circa 1997 and then an entire extraterrestrial planet. But while "The Predator" tried to dial things back to muddled results, director Dan Trachtenberg's prequel "Prey" is much more successful, with its story unfolding on the unconquered Great Plains in the early 18th century.
Winding the clock back simultaneously gives Trachtenberg an organic excuse to simplify the Predator's arsenal, which helps to level the playing field for the alien hunter and the film's human protagonist: the aspiring Comanche warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder). This approach of stripping "Predator" down to its basics also extends to the themes in "Prey." Much like...

As exciting and well-made as "Prey" was, it was a major bummer to see it relegated to a straight-to-streaming debut last year. But the film still has plenty going for it that rewards revisiting the action again and again. One of the biggest sources of its appeal, of course, comes from the shrewd casting of Amber Midthunder as our main hero Naru, and the choice to set the story in 1700s America, which allowed for an all-too-rare focus on an Indigenous tribe of Comanches. Drop a seemingly unstoppable Predator into the mix and, well, it's obvious why viewers responded so eagerly to director Dan Trachtenberg's latest effort.
With the 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release once again putting the film in the news, /Film's Ethan Anderton recently had the chance to talk to the filmmaker about all the factors that went into making "Prey" as tense and thrilling as it turned out to be.

Last year, "Prey" delivered the best new installment of the "Predator" franchise since the 1987 original. Director Dan Trachtenberg took us back to the early 1700s to deliver a story of courage and survival as a young Comanche woman named Naru finds herself coming face-to-face with a Predator, with only a hatchet, a bow and arrow, a trusty canine, and a few clever tricks to help her. That meant giving us an all-new Predator to hunt her down, and Trachtenberg was both excited and challenged by the prospect of helping to create a creature from hundreds of years ago.

Representation in films and television isn’t only about race and ethnicity. It’s also about giving deserved respect to genres and recognizing the allies who do the work to ensure those stories are appropriately told. That’s what director Dan Trachtenberg achieves with the science-fiction horror flick “Prey,” while working hand-in-hand with Indigenous producer Jhane Myers. The Hulu film is among the nominated contenders for outstanding television movie, making Myers the first Indigenous woman ever nominated for producing at the Emmys.
“Those conversations were not hard,” Myers tells Variety about working with Trachtenberg. “He was open. Plus, with Amber [Midthunder] being Native and most of our cast, it was organic. That’s what makes this film remarkable. I can tell you this: until this day, we’ve never argued.”
Myers, a Comanche and Blackfeet American Indian, has long advocated for Native language, cultural advising and advancement in the entertainment industry.

In a big win for lovers of physical media, one of the most acclaimed streaming releases of 2022 is finally coming to home media. After rumors swirled online, Disney has officially announced that "Prey" will indeed be getting a physical release on 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD from October 3, 2023. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg of "10 Cloverfield Lane" fame, "Prey" is a prequel set within the "Predator" universe that takes place 300 years ago set in the Comanche Nation. Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
All it took was an email to get 20th Century Studios interested in greenlighting Dan Trachtenberg’s “Prey,” the film that (per Hulu) became the streamer’s biggest premiere ever and is currently nominated for six Emmys, including Outstanding Television Movie.
“I was thinking a lot about a few things at once,” Trachtenberg said to IndieWire over Zoom, as he prepared to give a step-by-step breakdown of how the “Prey” pitch came together. “On the one hand, I was thinking about period and sci-fi — wanting to make a movie that combined those two ingredients that we don’t often see combined — and survival stories, and making a movie that could primarily be told through action with little to no dialogue.

It’s a good thing that the Television Academy never scrapped the Television Movie Emmy category because original streaming movies stepped up in a major way this morning in the Primetime noms.
Streaming movies notched four of the five Outstanding Movie Primetime Emmy nomination slots including Disney+’s most watched movie ever Hocus Pocus 2, Disney’s Hulu movies Prey and Fire Island, as well as Roku’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. In recent years, there’s been chatter that the Television Academy was pondering a nix of the movie category, but they’ve held on to it, and obviously streamers are delivering product to it.
Even more amazing, streaming movies grabbed three out of the six writing noms in the limited-anthology series/movie slot: Prey, Fire Island (Joel Kim Booster) and Weird: Al the Yankovic Story (Weird Al and Eric Appel).

Jeff Cutter and Dan Trachtenberg are no strangers to taking residence within larger franchises. The director of photography and director, respectively, have collaborated on feature films set in both the worlds of “Predator” and “Cloverfield” — and delivered best-of entrants along the way.
And both offered unique challenges, too: For Hulu’s “Prey,” the trim, exciting “Predator” prequel from 2022, the duo took advantage of the great outdoors in a massive scope. While their 2016 film “10 Cloverfield Lane” relied on a virtually all-interior pressure cooker set in a John Goodman-run bunker.

“Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg wanted his “Predator” spinoff, which is set in 1719, to be shot in a naturalistic way, so cinematographer Jeff Cutter made use of available light whenever possible — especially from fire and the moon.

In the movie, Comanche warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder) tracks and hunts down a killer alien through the woods. “I would use fire as much as possible and augment it if we had to,” says Cutter.
A few scenes were entirely lit by fire torches, with no supplemental lighting. For those moments, the Dp would advise Midthunder and other actors how to hold the torch without disrupting their performances.

“It’s always a very rewarding experience for the audience when they can just watch and hear, and the scene can still have a very profound impact on the viewer,” reveals “Prey” editor Angela Catanzaro A.C.E. about immersing the audience in a visual and sonic adventure in which the human vs. alien death-match is presented with minimal dialogue. For our recent webchat she adds, “that’s always one of my favorite exercises to do as an editor. I’m a very much a minimalist when it comes to dialogue, to see how much we can do with just a little bit.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

This action figure will be available in September, and you can take a look at an image of it at the bottom of this article.

She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. This coming August will mark one year since the release of Hulu’s Prey, a new installment in the Predator franchise that was a massive success for the streamer. Unfortunately, we’re still not aware of any plans for Prey to ever get a physical media release, which is a serious bummer for Blu-ray collectors whose Predator collection is missing an integral installment.
But that’s the bad news. The good news? Neca has announced this week that the unique Predator from Prey is being honored with its own action figure later this year.

The latest “Predator” spin-off movie, “Prey,” is hunting down a nomination for Best TV Movie at this year’s Emmys. Given the cinematic filmmaking on display combined with the enthusiastic reviews for the flick, it would have been a strong Oscar contender. That pedigree is why it currently sits in joint second in our odds chart for Best TV Movie alongside “Fire Island.” In top spot is “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” while the other two predicted nominees are “Hocus Pocus 2” and “Jerry and Marge Go Large.” “Prey” has the gravitas and cinematic weight, however, to emerge top of that crowded pack.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, “Prey” follows Amber Midthunder in 1719 as Naru, a warrior of the Comanche Nation who is forced to protect her tribe from one of the very first Predators to ever land on Earth. The film is a tight, taut, practice in tension and features...

Dating can be both a heartache and a headache. You keep trying and trying to find someone who shares some sort of connection with you, go through all the anxious rituals of texting and calling and trying to keep it together when you run into them, trying to find an excuse to ask them out. That could all be for nothing if you end up getting ghosted.
But what if your date was actually a ghost, or a ghoul, or even a god?
Maybe they’re a superhero. Maybe you’re both superheroes. In anime, it usually doesn’t matter, because you can have the power to defy gravity or slay demons and still break down when you so much as hear the name of your crush. From doing embarrassing things for attention to finding yourself in a really uncomfortable love triangle, almost anything can get between you and whoever is on your mind.

From man-eating piranhas to rabid Saint Bernards, there’s no shortage of animal-related antagonists in the horror genre. In fact, popular films like Jaws have even managed to convince audiences that certain critters pose a bigger threat than they actually do, leading to devastating consequences for the environment when folks take up arms and hunt innocent animals to the brink of extinction.
However, not all horror flicks are about evil creatures of the night, with some stories depicting heroic animals that come to the rescue when our protagonists need it most. And with the Holiday season upon us, we thought that this would be a good time for a heartwarming list celebrating Six Animal Heroes in Horror Movies! After all, who hasn’t questioned whether or not their beloved pet would come to their defense if one were to be attacked by masked murderers or flesh-eating zombies?

Science fiction is one of the most versatile genres not only in film but in the arts in general. It is a genre intrinsically tied with the social, political, and economic strife of any particular time — oftentimes, the cyclical nature of humanity will mean that a sci-fi movie relevant in the 1950s will become relevant in the 2020s. Without science fiction, who knows what the landscape of film and television would be like today?
All of this is to say that 2022 was arguably terrible, although the sci-fi films released this year were pretty damn good. While some movies had their hype campaigns accentuated with festival runs, others seemed to come out of nowhere to delight genre fans and casual viewers alike. From micro-budget films to big Hollywood blockbusters, the genre was rife with sci-fi movies that not only helped diversify the genre but also made us think about it in totally new ways.

Amber Midthunder has signed with CAA for representation amid a breakout year following her performance in the hit Hulu film “Prey.”
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Hulu touted the “Predator” prequel — the fifth film in the action-thriller franchise — as its most-watched TV or movie premiere ever. Set in the Comanche Nation in 1717, the project also marked a major cultural moment for Indigenous representation, both for the industry and for Midthunder, who is an enrolled tribal member at the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Indian Reservation. In the film, Midthunder plays Naru, a young warrior fighting to save her tribe from a Predator. After earning critical and audience raves for her performance, she was named to Variety’s annual 10 Actors to Watch list.
Before booking “Prey,” Midthunder starred opposite Liam Neeson and Laurence Fishburne in Jonathan Hensleigh’s “The Ice Road” for Netflix. She also produced and starred in “The Wheel,” which...

Jhane Myers, the producer of the thriller film ‘Prey’, shared that the team conducted extensive research with regard to the way of life and traditions of the Native American tribe of Comanche. The film presents a vicious and terrifying showdown between various predators with a gripping narrative and representation of the Comanche tribe.
Talking about the work it took to learn about the tribe, Jhane said, “We did extensive amounts of historical research and studied their customs and period-appropriate dialogue and sign language.”
She added: “The Comanches hunt and fight for survival. Everything that they hunt, like when they hunt a Buffalo, every part of that Buffalo is used. Nothing is wasted, and they’re also thankful for the spirit of that Buffalo that’s able to nourish them, clothe them, and is used for everything that they need in life.”

"Prey" boasts the sort of inventive high-concept that movie franchises could use more of. In a nutshell, it's "Predator" but set in the Great Plains of the 1700s. The hero is not a musclebound mercenary like Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch, but a Comanche girl named Naru (Amber Midthunder) who aspires to be a hunter. Even when it hits familiar beats, the unique setting ensures that "Prey" remains its own beast.
The film is so far removed from the usual setting of a "Predator" movie that the first shot of a spaceship and cloaked alien feel surreal. If you didn't know that "Prey" was a "Predator" film ahead of time, it would be a jaw-dropping moment. However, the realities of modern movie marketing -- where the usual goal is to remind audiences of something they already know about -- ensure that no one had this experience.

There is a period-piece level of realism that adorns the blood-soaked plot of "Prey," director Dan Trachtenberg's retelling of a familiar story about a certain solitary alien landing on Earth to hunt the populace. After all, one of the big reasons it distinguishes itself from previous "Predator" films is its setting. "Prey" abandons the increasingly dull modern and future set timelines of the sequels in favor of the Great Plains circa 1719. There the film follows the journey of Naru, a young Comanche woman trained as a healer with aspirations (and enough great skill) to be a hunter, as she's forced to protect her tribe from an onslaught of dangers.
Countless times throughout my first watch of "Prey," I kept thinking how much it reminded me of "The Revenant" — from its intimately visceral action sequences that put you at the center of the commotion to its brutal presentation of life on the frontier.

Predator franchise producer John Davis has said that the future is wide open for this series after the successful release of Prey through the Hulu streaming service. The possibilities for future films seem limitless, so we decided to compile some of them together for a list we’re calling Predator Franchise: What’s Next After Prey?
Prey Sequel
Prey director Dan Trachtenberg left the door wide open for a direct follow-up. Artwork during the end credits shows more Predator ships arriving in the Comanche Nation, and the tribe still has possession of the pistol we saw in the hands of a Predator (and Danny Glover) in Predator 2. So the Predators have to retrieve that pistol somehow. While it could be cool to see a sequel to Prey, it would also be quite unusual for the Predator franchise, because we have never seen the lead from one entry return for a second Predator encounter.

That’s something that the film’s star, Amber Midthunder, really appreciated; as an indigenous actress, she told us that Trachtenberg was always open to ideas and suggestions about how to make the movie feel more authentic. A return to form for the "Predator" franchise, "Prey" did a tremendous job of elevating the original concept to new and improved heights. The subversive prequel manages to be a bloody ode to the first film while packing a ferocious punch that sets itself apart from other entries in the franchise. Moreover, "Prey" blends horror and action through its gruesome visuals and bone-chilling sound, bound together with an epic, adventurous musical score by Sarah Schachner. The composition is not only a deviation from other creature features in the genre, but it came about after director Dan Trachtenberg and composer Schachner realized the "Prey" needed to move away from contemporary movie scores.
One film in particular served as the initial inspiration for musical bits of the latest "Predator" flick. According to the director, Jóhann Jóhannsson's score for Denis Villeneuve's "Sicario" was used as temporary music during the editing process for "Prey.

"Prey" is such a refreshing take on the "Predator" franchise that really the only connection it seems to have to other films is the eponymous alien and a certain flintlock pistol. Set 300 years ago on the Great Plains, this instalment of the series focuses on a Comanche tribe that runs afoul of a Predator's first hunt on Earth. It also embraces the kind of natural horror and terror that comes from such a simple role reversal like the hunter becoming hunted -- something that made the first film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger such an edge-of-your-seat action thriller.
Director Dan Trachtenberg has described "Prey" as a David vs. Goliath tale, in which Comanche hunter Naru (Amber Midthunder) is forced to adapt to tracking and hunting the hulking Predator, played by the towering 6'9" actor Dane Diliegro. Naru's exhausting struggle against the alien is analogous in a way to Diliegro's own experience behind the scenes.

As the best-reviewed film featuring the elusive Predator, "Prey" is a return to form for the long-running franchise in more ways than one. Following a sole protagonist in Naru (Amber Midthunder), the Indigenous-led narrative recalls the bare-bones, cat-and-mouse game that made the original "Predator" film so riveting. The creature that inhabits the unique setting is a different, devolved Predator (Dane Diliegro) that still instills pure terror in its prey. The innovative nature of "Prey" is partially thanks to the new faces in front and behind the screen, but longtime collaborators contribute to the refreshing update of the previously-declining property.
Behind the scenes, "Prey" features the return of select filmmakers closely attached to the foundation of the franchise. The prequel brings back special effects veterans Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. to handle the creature that torments "Prey," redesigning the futuristic, complex look typically attributed to the Predator to fit the 1719 setting.

Take a look at more new footage from "Prey", a prequel to the "Predator" alien hunter franchise, directed by Dan Trachtenberg ("10 Cloverfield Lane") for 20th Century Studios, now streaming on Hulu:
"...set in the world of the 'Comanche Nation' 300 years ago, the new action-thriller follows 'Naru' (Midthunder), a skilled warrior who fiercely protects her tribe against a highly evolved alien predator..."
The "Predator" movie franchise began in 1987 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Five more titles in the franchise have been released since then, most recently "The Predator" (2018) directed by Shane Black.
'Yautja', aka 'Hish-Qu-Ten' is an extraterrestrial species characterized by its trophy hunting of other species for sport. First introduced in the film of the same name as its main antagonist, the creatures returned in the sequels "Predator 2' (1990), "Predators" (2010), "The Predator" (2018), as well as the crossover films "Alien vs. Predator" (2004) and "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" (2007).
