The delightfully insane Mutant Girls Squad is the latest frenetic experience in the Japanese splatter movement.
It brings together three of the most famous filmmakers in this inexplicable subgenre for the first time. Directors Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl) and Tak Sakaguchi (Samurai Zombie) have created a very wet, very funny body horror tale that is being touted as a spoof of the X-Men films. While there are a few similarities to that comic book franchise, Mutant Girls Squad is a decidedly different monster.
Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) is a timid teenager who is savagely bullied at school. Upon her 16th birthday, she discovers that she’s the progeny of a half-human, half-mutant union. This would explain why her right hand can morph...

Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark Announced: The Asylum officially announced the third film in their Mega Shark series:
“The Asylum has officially greenlit production on Mega Shark Vs. Mecha Shark, a much anticipated third installment in the ‘Mega Shark’ franchise, following Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus in 2009 and Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus in 2010. When Mega Shark returns in this all-new feature film, the government releases the top-secret Mecha Shark to defeat the franchise’s popular monster in a fierce battle that threatens the planet.
‘The fan response to the Mega Shark franchise has been rabid,’ said The Asylum partner Paul Bales. ‘In addition to a very persuasive online petition, we found that Mega Shark has taken on a life of her own.

Directors: Noboru Iguchi, Yoshihiro Nishimura and Tak Sakaguchi.
Writers: Noboru Iguchi (story), and Jun Tsugita (screenplay).
Cast: Naoto Takenaka, Yumi Sugimoto, Yûko Takayama and Suzuka Morita.
The people behind Sushi Typhoon are at "it" again, and this time the directorial team of Noboru Iguchi, Yoshihiro Nishimura and Tak Sakaguchi created a product that's more digestible. Instead of one attractive female lead, there are three, and each director handled a segment of this movie. After a Charlie's Angel style introduction, this movie moves back in time to show how the Mutant Girls Squad formed.
Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) is an unassuming teen who is simply being bullied at school. After she celebrates her 16th birthday, her parents reveal that she is a mutant, a Hiruko that can manifest body armour or extra body parts. Her father is pure stock and mother a human, and that can lead to some interesting results when puberty almost changes her.

Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) has just turned sixteen, she is constantly bullied at school and is belittled by her joyfully overbearing parents. All this changes in the blink of an eye however when she is pushed to breaking point and her hand transforms into a deformed but deadly claw. Her parents inform her that she is a 'Hiruko' a type of mutant that is hunted and hated by normal humans. It is not long before her family is attacked and Rin flees, abusing her new found strength by going on a shameless killing spree. She is captured and trained by the antiheroes of this movie, a sect of the Hiruko and three girls that take her in as their own but also have their own special...

Oh, what a night that was. As those following the Twitch Twitter feed already know the Canadian premiere of Mutant Girls Squad came at Fantasia last night and brought a few surprises with it.
Kicking things off, co-director Yoshihiro Nishimura and Sushi Typhoon producer Yoshinori Chiba hit the stage with Nyaff co-founder Marc Walkow - who also doubles as Sushi Typhoons North American press and festival guy - and dropped a pair of big, unannounced treats on the audience.
First: a promo reel for the entire Sushi Typhoon lineup including the first footage from Sion Sono's Cold Fish (very bloody), Noboru Iguchi's Zaborgar (very roboty), and Yudai Yamaguchi and Tak Sakaguchi's Yakuza Weapon which featured regular Sushi Typhoon star Cay Izumi as a creation known simply as the Naked Human Weapon. Whatever you're thinking right now is probably not far from the truth.

[Midnight Madness at Fantasia prompts a revisit of Alexander Thebez's review of Yoshihiro Nishimura & Noburo Iguchi low budget mayhem.]
Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) is a normal high school girl in Japan. She wears a sailor outfit, very pretty, has loving parents and is turning sixteen. Her life at school may be a little miserable because of mean bullies, but little does she know that it is just going to get worse, or better, depending on how you look at it.
Upon her arrival at home, Rin finds out that she is a descendant of the ancient Hiruko clan that is gifted with superpowers. Not long after this new discovery, a group of anti-mutant government super soldiers come swarming in and butcher Rin's parents.
After almost killing the entire town due to misunderstanding and grief-fueled rage, Rin meets Rei (Yuko Takayama). Rei introduces Rin to a small rag-tag group of mutant rebels led by the androgynous Kisaragi (Tak Sakaguchi), who is bent on restoring the Hiruko clan's place in the world.

Freshly released in Japan, the three part cult feature Mutant Girls Squad - soon to receive it's International Premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival - features fresh directorial work from three of the biggest names in Japan's cult film scene with Noboru Iguchi (Machine Girl), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and Tak Sakaguchi (the star of Versus) each directing one third of the story.
While I'm not going to get into a full review just yet I will say that I've had the chance to see it and that while Nishimura and Iguchi deliver exactly what you'd expect from them - and loads of it, to great effect - the big surprise here is just how far Sakaguchi has advanced as a director. Not to slight Iguchi or Nishimura - who both turn in wildly entertaining work - but this film is going to be Sakaguchi's coming out party as a director.

Spotted Productions has posted three short making-of clips for Mutant Girls Squad, which opened at Theater N Shibuya on May 22nd. The X-Men-inspired action/gore film was co-directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura, Tak Sakaguchi, and Noboru Iguchi and will get its international premiere this July in a co-presentation between the New York Asian Film Festival and Japan Cuts Festival of Contemporary Japanese Cinema.
The first clip features Suzuka Morita getting lots of girly direction from Iguchi followed by some gore hijinx with Nishimura's crew. Clip #2 features Yuko Takayama receiving direction from all three directors. In the recently-uploaded third clip, Yumi Sugimoto makes use of her mutated claw hand.

With its domestic release a little over a month away, a new trailer has been released for Mutant Girls Squad, the new cross-genre gorefest co-directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police), Tak Sakaguchi (Samurai School), and Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl) with backing by Nikkatsu for their newly-created Sushi Typhoon sub-label.
In sort of a loose take on X-Men, the film stars Yumi Sugimoto as a high school girl named Rin who begins to notice a sharp pain in her right arm on her 16th birthday. As her arm mutates into a deadly weapon, it becomes clear that she’s not a normal human. Soon, Rin is targeted by a special forces unit who brutally murder her parents right in front of her. Driven by rage, Rin utilizes her newly-mutated arm to cut down the soldiers one by one. Eventually, a mysterious man and young girl arrive with a special iron mask.

The new film by Tak (Be a Man! Samurai School) Sakaguchi, Noboru (Robo-Geisha) Iguchi, and Yoshihiro (Tokyo Gore Police) Nishimura, Sento Shojo (Japanese title) or Mutant Girls Squad, is in post production; and we've got a behind-the-scenes look at the editing process.
According to the Sushi Typhoon Twitter page, the film starring pin-up model Yumi Sugimoto is currently slated to have its international premiere in July. We're guessing that means it will premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival, where Nishimura's Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl had its international premiere last year. Just makes sense, no?
The images below come courtesy of Marc Walkow of Subway Cinema.
The man barely visible on the monitor is the film's central baddie (played by Versus' Tak Sakaguchi, reportedly as a cross-dressing mutant sword-swinger). The other shots are of an in-studio creature effect and Nishimura on his fourth nonstop day of editing the movie.

Tak (Be a Man! Samurai School) Sakaguchi, Noboru (Robo-Geisha) Iguchi, and Yoshihiro (Tokyo Gore Police) Nishimura are teaming up to direct the genre mash-up Sento Shojo (Japanese title) or Mutant Girls Squad for Nikkatsu Films starring pin-up model Yumi Sugimoto.
Marc Walkow at Outcast Cinema tipped us off that the Tokyo-based shoot begins on February 1st and lasts 20 days, with each of the men tackling a different 1/3 of the movie. The directors have stated that it is not an anthology film, and rumor has it that each portion of the movie will reflect their respective talents in action (Sakaguchi), comedy (Iguchi), and splatter (Nishimura).
Director Iguchi, who also wrote and directed Machine Girl, has stated that "gore and freak effects will be abundant" throughout the movie. Always nice to hear that, no?
Keep it locked for more as it comes. In the interim ... dig on a yummy photo of Yumi!

[Updated with fresh details!]
The project is a three way action omnibus titled Sento Shojo. The star, Japanese pin up girl Yumi Sugimoto. Directing? Noboru Iguchi (Machine Girl), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police), and Tak Sakaguchi (Be A Man, Samurai School). Now, all three directors are currently prepping other features so I have no idea when this is going to roll, but roll it shall. Poor Sugimoto ... she seems like such a nice girl ...
Update!
Thanks to Marc Walkow of Outcast Cinema for the following bits of news. Backed by Nikkatsu studios, which probably means this will be released here via their Sushi Typhoon label, the English title is The Mutant Girls Squad. Production begins February 1st and will follow a similar format to Johnnie To / Tsui Hark / Ringo Lam collaboration Triangle, with each of the three directors handling a third of a single continuous storyline. According to Iguchi, "gore and freak effects will be abundant.

aaah, finally something that looks like a nice slow animated brainfuck from our cultural overlords. Kūchū Buranko (Trapeze) is the adaptation of a short story collection by Hideo Okuda that will air in eleven episodes in a mix between traditional animation and live-action segments on Japanese TV starting October 15th. It tells the story of a psychiatrist, his unusual and versatile patients and a (not so?) nice nursed played and voiced by gravure idol Yumi Sugimoto. Kenji Nakamura, director of the amazing Mononoke series will helm the project.
