Exclusive: A Cannes Market teeming with strong film packages adds a new one.
I’m hearing that buyers will today be getting The Hood, a script by Paul Greengrass that he will direct, with Benedict Cumberbatch starring. The period drama is about the peasant revolt in England, I’m told. Cumberbatch will play a farmer who become the leader in an action drama that is best likened to Braveheart, and Gladiator.
Greengrass last directed the Tom Hanks-starrer News of the World, and Cumberbatch is coming off his Best Actor-nominated performance in Power of the Dog.
CAA Media Finance and FilmNation are selling this one. Tyler Thompson’s Cross Creek is financing and producing. Thompson and Greggory Goodman are producing. Original Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, age 80, is dropping out of the group’s upcoming US tour to further his recovery from an unspecified medical procedure.
Watts will be replace by Steve Jordan, who has appeared on several Keith Richards solo recordings and as part of his X-Pensive Winos band. Jordan was also a member of the house bands for Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman, and has worked with the John Mayer Trio.
Watts has been with the Stones since the band’s 1962 inception.
A statement from the Rolling Stones confirmed the switch.
“Charlie has had a procedure which was completely successful, but I gather his doctors this week concluded that he now needs proper rest and recuperation. With rehearsals starting in a couple of weeks it’s very disappointing to say the least, but it’s also fair to say no one saw this coming.

Streaming giant Netflix has set an Oct. 16 launch date for Aaron Sorkin’s star-studded political drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7” — three weeks before the national election.
Netflix closed the deal on July 1 with Cross Creek Pictures for the drama, which recaps the trial that followed what were intended to be peaceful protests that turned violent at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The organizers of the protest, including Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale, were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot.
Netlix also released first-look photos on Wednesday on Twitter, noting the “big hair energy” on several of the stars. Mark Strong’s Jerry Rubin character appears to be smoking marijuana in a classroom in one shot.

Netflix will debut Aaron Sorkin’s awards contender The Trial Of The Chicago 7 on its platform on October 16.
The streamer acquired worldwide rights to the ensemble drama from Cross Creek Pictures earlier this month after the ongoing pandemic scuppered Paramount’s plans for a US theatrical release.
Netflix announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday (July 22). It remains unclear whether the film will get an accompanying US theatrical release given the uncertainty over cinemas reopening during a surge in Covid-19 cases, however Screen understands the plan is to do so should it be possible.

Netflix is negotiating a deal to acquire global rights to Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” from Cross Creek Pictures, Variety has learned.
The film follows the Chicago Seven, a group of seven activists who were charged by the federal government with conspiracy, inciting to riot and other charges stemming from anti-Vietnam War protests that broke out during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Intended as peaceful protests, they instead devolved into a violent clash with police and the National Guard. The organizers of the protest included Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale, and their trial was one of the most notorious in history. It’s a hot-button story, one that is sure to resonate in a presidential election year and at a time when protests over racial injustice are breaking out across the country. Cross Creek financed and produced the film.

With The Mummy landing in cinemas this week, Universal has taken the opportunity to launch the trailer for its next Tom Cruise project. Once known as Mena, it’s now called American Made, and sees Cruise reuniting with director Doug Liman, following their work on Edge Of Tomorrow.
It also looks like Cruise’s most interesting acting role in some time.
The film tells the story of a hustler by the name of Barry Seal – the character is based on a real person, even if the adventures around him use creative licence – who finds himself recruited by the CIA.
Here’s the trailer…
(Apparently, the Us version of the trailer doesn’t have drugs in it, fact fans).
And here’s the full synopsis for the movie…...

In 1813, renowned writer Jane Austen published a book called Pride and Prejudice, which tells the story of the Bennet sisters, who are gussied up and married off to wealthy suitors, one by one. The only sister who seems to question this system is Elizabeth, the rebellious member of the family, who feels strong disdain for the system that treats her more like property than a proper citizen. In 2009, author Seth Grahame-Smith put a new twist on the old tale by creating a parody novel called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which loosely follows the same basic outline, but adds an entirely different obstacle to the tale: the living dead.
In Grahame-Smith’s story, the girls are not only fighting for the right to be married into regal families, but also battling for their lives on a daily basis. An outbreak has occurred within these humble streets, and now flesh-eating zombies...

Plan B and Cross Creek Pictures are teaming to produce an adaptation of Mimi Baird and Eve Claxton's memoir "He Wanted the Moon". Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Tony Kushner ("Munich") has been hired to adapt.
Mimi Baird is the daughter of Perry Baird, a doctor who was ravaged by mental depression and suffered through treatments in the 1930s and 1940s when the solutions were the likes of straight jackets and lobotomies.
She discovered a manuscript her father had written while committed and then began piecing together the heartbreaking circumstances that occurred decades earlier when he left her at the age of six and the rest of the family refused to talk about him.
Brad Pitt, Tyler Thompson and Brian Oliver are producing.

Whether he likes it or not, Johnny Depp is going to be a part of this year's Awards Season for his mesmerizing portrayal of Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass" (See my review right here).
The actor, previously nominated for "Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl," "Finding Neverland," and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street," infamously told BBC Newsbeat that he "doesn't want to win one of those things ever." Well, guess what? He maybe nominated and perhaps win! Why? Because he's just been baptized by the Palm Springs International Film Festival with its Desert Palm Achievement Award. And that's a good sign as we traverse Awards Season.
This is in my hood and I'll give you reports from the red carpet! Here's the complete press release:
Palm Springs, CA (November 17, 2015) . The 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) will present Johnny Depp with the Desert Palm Achievement Award,...

Everest is just about to hit (September 18th), and while the man vs. nature genre isn’t for everyone, there are some movies worth seeing just for the effort involved, and anything shot, at least partially, on location in Nepal is on that list. Add an incredible cast, and even if the true story about an attempt to reach the summit of Everest gone wrong doesn’t instantly appeal to you, this still has to be one on your radar.
In order to make sure that you’re not misled by the days of CGI and fantastic sets, the film has released some very cool images that, if nothing else, clue you in to the fact that this perhaps wasn’t just a walk in the park for most of the actors.
