Updated, with additional details: After weeks of speculation, Kim Godwin is leaving her post as president of ABC News.
Debra OConnell, who added ABC News to her portfolio in February, will run the department in the interim. She made the announcement internally, with Godwin also addressing her staff. You can read the memos below.
At the time of OConnell’s February promotion when ABC News was put under her purview, Disney countered speculation about Godwin’s future by revealing that she had extended her contract to continue as ABC News president. But she was now reporting to OConnell, adding an additional layer between her and Dana Walden, the co-chairman of Disney Entertainment.
The exit follows CNN reports last week about frustration among ABC News staffers about Godwin’s management style that had been reportedly articulated to OConnell in her review of the division and its leadership.

The Disney layoffs have hit ABC News.
The broadcast news division has laid off approximately 50 people as part of the company’s planned cuts, with ABC News president Kim Godwin reorganizing her senior leadership team. Godwin announced the changes in a note to staff Thursday morning.
“Throughout the company, teams are being impacted by the downsizing that was announced several weeks ago, including our own ABC News family. While these actions are never easy, they are a necessary step to ensure we’re on solid footing for the years ahead as we chart a sustainable, growth-oriented path forward for the entire organization,” Godwin wrote. “While this is a difficult time for all of us — particularly those directly affected by these tough decisions — it’s important to remember that together, we are resilient, and will emerge from this period of transition stronger than before.”

When ABC News producer and investigative reporter James Gordon Meek first heard about the deadly terrorist ambush of a U.S. Special forces team in Niger on Oct. 4, 2017, he said that he and others at the network were quickly met with the Pentagon’s shifting version of events.
“When this happened, we could not get two people to tell us the same story,” Meek told Deadline. “We couldn’t even get people to tell us whether there were 10 or 11 Americans that were ambushed, or there were 50.”
As they pursued the story and interviewed family members of the fallen soldiers, they eventually saw a much larger project beyond breaking news updates or a more in-depth news magazine piece. Instead, they created a feature-length documentary, 3212 Un-Redacted, debuting on Hulu on Thursday, Veteran’s Day.
The documentary shows what happened as the unit was caught in a surprise Isis attack in outside the Saharan village of Tongo Tongo.

ABC News will elevate Derek Medina to executive vice president, giving him oversight of many of the Walt Disney unit’s business operations and freeing president James Goldston to devote some of his time to broader strategies.
“He will be a key partner for me in running our business who will manage our operational efforts and growth strategies and work with me and all our leaders on advancing the culture,” said Goldston in a prepared statement. The heads of marketing, global newsgathering operations, news administration, news practices and non-fiction production will report to Medina.
HIs ascension reflects the absence of a designated second-in-command executive at ABC News in recent years. Some of those duties had been taken up by Barbara Fedida, a former senior vice president who left ABC News earlier this year, and Tom Cibrowski, a former senior vice president who left in 2018 to run Disney-owned ABC station Kgo in San Francisco.

“This is the beginning of our reporting on the understanding of how we got here,” says Karl, in an interview Wednesday. “It’s a big step, but it’s a first step.”

ABC News will tackle the thorny subject of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein with two different specials, just weeks after internal video leaked of “20/20” anchor Amy Robach complaining she could not some of her own reporting about the controversial figure on the air.
ABC News has scheduled a two-hour broadcast special and eight-part podcast on Jeffrey Epstein and the women who survived his crimes and abuse. Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died in a jail cell while under arrest under charges of sex trafficking earlier this year, traveled in elite circles and the scrutiny around his crimes has drawn attention to everyone from former President Bill Clinton to England’s Prince Andrew to former Microsoft chief Bill Gates. All have denied being involved with Epstein’s procurement of women.
“Truth and Lies: Jeffrey Epstein” will air Thursday, January 9 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. eastern on ABC. A podcast, hosted by Mark Remillard,...

Tough news for Rick Santorum, Joan Walsh, Jack Kingston and the dozens of CNN analysts and contributors who often hold forth during the network’s primetime “panel” discussions: Chris Cuomo wants little to do with you.
When Cuomo launches a new CNN show in primetime next week, he intends to rely largely on one-on-one interviews with newsmakers, and less on the large and often unruly roundtables that have become a staple on the Time Warner-owned network’s air since before the 2016 election. Doing so, he says, was one of the conditions he sought in exchange for taking the new gig.
He got it. “I don’t need to sit there and listen to all of these outsized voices with competing banter,” Cuomo says during a recent interview. “I think there’s enough of it.”
And so, CNN will make a new bid in what is perhaps cable news’ most heated fray.
