Why Watch? Tropfest is a massive launching pad for short filmmaking. In fact, it’s the world’s largest short film festival, taking place every February in Sydney, but the festival itself has a truly global reach and an audience of around 150,000. The judges this year (including Sam Worthington) have chosen to award We’ve All Been There with the top honors, and it’s no doubt because of its ability to fold three stories into each other until they become one. There’s a Crash-like aspect here, but this short film is far less cloying. Jess (Laura Wheelwright) is a pregnant waitress in need of fast cash to avoid losing her house; Joan (Penne Hackworth-Jones) is a middle-aged woman stranded in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire; and Matt (Ditch Davey) is looking for a job without finding much luck. Beyond possibly having the best-named actors in the history of the art form, this...

This account of Julian Assange’s formative years, adapted from Suelette Dreyfus’ novel, opens with a pre-text admitting that some details have been “modified for dramatic purposes”, an uneasy disclaimer in even meticulously-constructed features made for theatrical distribution, let alone those with the less-attractive plaudits of having first aired recently on Australian TV. Taking place in 1989 Melbourne, Underground traces 17-year-old computer hacker Julian’s (Alex Williams) activist beginnings, as he is raised by his single mother Christine (Rachel Griffiths), and falls for a cute local, Electra (Laura Wheelwright), while trying to keep the authorities at bay.
Director Robert Connolly offers up a tinge of The Social Network’s sexed-up style, but he’s not fortunate enough to have been blessed with a Sorkin-grade screenplay. Particularly weak is the depiction of Julian’s familial disarray – in which his father appears to run a cult of some kind,...

One of the unorthodox selections at the Toronto International Film Festival this year is Underground, as it's a made for TV movie that - if it wasn't for Tiff - would have had its world premiere on a major Australian commercial TV network later this year. However three key things elevate this movie. First it's being directed by one of Australia's greatest directors Robert Connolly, who has already been producer or director on such iconic films as The Boys, Romulus My Father and Balibo, and who more than any other Australian director has the potential to have a Peter Weir-like career over the next 20 years. Second, the cast: stalwarts Anthony Lapaglia, Rachel Griffiths star alongside rising stars Callan McAuliffe, Laura Wheelwright, TV comedian Jordan Paskopoulos and newcomer Alex Williams. And...

The first trailer for "Underground: The Julian Assange Story" (better known as "the Julian Assange movie") has debuted. The film stars Alex Williams as the well-coiffed rogue, with Anthony Lapaglia as the detective on his case. Laura Wheelwright plays his girlfriend and Rachel Griffiths plays his mother, Christine.
"Underground" is a made-for-Australian-tv movie, but it is nonetheless screening this weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival. Deadline.com reports that the movie is based on the 1997 book Underground: Tales of Hacking, Madness and Obsession on the Electronic Frontier by Suelette Dreyfus. NBCUniversal will distribute the film worldwide.
The real-life Assange is currently stuck in Ecuador's embassy in London, where he is hiding from authorities. Assange is evading being shipped to Sweden to face rape and sexual assault charges. His decision to remain in London has become a diplomatic nightmare for England, who has said it is legally obligated to deliver the suspect to Sweden.

One of the highlights of David Michod's debut feature Animal Kingdom was the revelation of newcomer Laura Wheelwright. While most critics focused on the central performance of James Frecheville, Wheelwright also turned in a stellar but subtle performance. Since then I've been hanging to see what she'd do next. One answer is Wakey Wakey, the debut feature from Adrian Goodman. A sequestered narcoleptic teenager on the cusp of her sexual awakening seeks liberation through her rebellious half-sister, becoming the subject of her dangerous art.I'd recommend waiting for Robert Connolly's Underground, about the early years of Julian Assange (which premieres at Tiff) for a real sense of what Wheelright is capable of, but until then check out the trailer for Wakey Wakey below. ...

A dark tale from the criminal underworld of Melbourne, Australia, Animal Kingdom builds up layer after layer of tension until it reaches breaking point.
Beginning with worryingly detached teenager Joshua ‘J’ Cody (James Frecheville) witnessing his mother’s quiet demise after overdosing on heroin, the film sees his life spiral completely out of control after he is taken in by estranged grandmother Janine ‘Smurf’ Cody (Jacki Weaver) and her household of malignant criminals.
Chief among the reprobates she dotes upon is J’s uncle, ‘Pope’ (Ben Mendelsohn) who has recently emerged from hiding and is itching to pursue a vendetta against increasingly violent and maverick members of the armed robbery division of Melbourne’s police force. Amidst flying bullets, awkwardly Oedipal family tensions, and shady drug deals, J tries to eek an existence and, most importantly, protect his girlfriend Nicky (Laura Wheelwright).

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

Chicago – The thin line between anarchy and social peace is shriveling into a microscopic blur as sentencing and incarceration become increasingly less effective as a deterrent. The human side of this perspective is explored with an artistic elegance, featuring Guy Pearce in writer/director David Michôd’s “Animal Kingdom.”

Set in the Melbourne (Australia) criminal underworld and the environments of the rival law enforcement, the Kingdom involves “Pope” Cody (Ben Mendelsohn), a armed robber in exile because of a betrayal involving corrupt cops. His gang is also in a downslide, as his main business partner Baz (Joel Edgerton) wants out, and his brothers Craig (Sullivan Stapleton) and Darren (Luke Ford) are muddling through with other pursuits.
To this coterie comes a 19 year old nephew, nicknamed “J” (James Frencheville), who comes to live with the family after his mother dies. He is immediately put under the wing of the family’s matriarch,...

Imagine running from a burning building in the middle of the night. You burst through some bushes and suddenly find yourself in the middle of the lion's den at the zoo. Around you, some of the lions nap lazily on the rocks, while others sit and stare with that wide-eyed ferocity of the large cats. You freeze as questions gnaw the inside of your skull like these very beasts soon may be. Run? Stay still? When were they last fed? Do they give them flanks of raw steak or is it some sort of nutrient rich slurry? Are they domesticated or do they see humans as snacky cakes? The whole situation might very well be less harrowing if only one of the lions would instantly pounce and tear you asunder. But no, they sit, coiled, staring, perhaps 10 minutes, perhaps 10 years pass, and you are still frozen on the spot where you landed.

James Frecheville and Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom
Photo: Sony Pictures Classics David Michod is part of the Australian filmmaking group Blue Tongue Films alongside Nash Edgerton and other up and comers such as Spencer Susser and Luke Doolan. It's a group of filmmakers loaded with potential and some have already started staking their claim. Edgerton released The Square earlier this year, Doolan was nominated for an Oscar for his excellent short film Miracle Fish and Susser has Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman coming soon. It's a group to keep an eye on to say the least.
As for Michod, Animal Kingdom is his first feature length narrative of which he also wrote. It made a big splash at Sundance earlier this year and was promptly snatched up by Sony Pictures Classics. It's a crime feature of a different sort, centered on the Cody family, which is made...

Here’s the brand new trailer for Australian movie, Animal Kingdom which stars Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Guy Pearce, Luke Ford, Jacki Weaver, Sullivan Stapleton, James Frecheville and is directed by David Michôd.
Synopsis: Welcome to the Melbourne underworld, where tensions are building between dangerous criminals and equally dangerous police. The Wild West played out on the city’s streets. Armed robber Pope Cody (Ben Mendelsohn) is in hiding, on the run from a gang of renegade detectives who want him dead. His business partner and best friend, Barry ‘Baz’ Brown (Joel Edgerton), wants out of the game, recognizing that their days of old-school banditry are all but over. Pope’s younger brother, the speed-addicted and volatile Craig Cody (Sullivan Stapleton), is making a fortune in the illicit substances trade – the true cash cow of the modern criminal fraternity – while the youngest Cody brother, Darren (Luke Ford), naively navigates his...

Sony Pictures Classics has released the official trailer for the highly acclaimed Australian thriller called Animal Kingdom. This movie looks like a great film! This film is about a family of armed robbers from Melbourne's underworld, with a focus on a teenage boy and his uncles. I did have the opportunity to see this film at Sundance this year, but our writer Abe Froman did, and it was his favorite film up at Sundance. Here's a couple things he said about it in his review.
A finely tuned piece of pure heart-pounding suspense, filled with a wide array of magnetic perfomaces. Animal Kingdom gives us a thorough look into a family of drug dealers and bank robbers, who have successfully eluded police. Hiding in plain sight with no prosecutable evidence against them, renegade cops take matters into their own hands, and the family does what it takes to protect themselves.
