Accidental president. Vietnam. Civil Rights Act. Bully. This is Lyndon B. Johnson’s legacy, or at least how he’s often remembered. New HBO film All the Way seeks to illuminate many sides of the man who stepped into the highest office in the land after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Bryan Cranston plays Lbj in the film, premiering on HBO tonight, following his Tony-winning turn as the president in All the Way on Broadway. After he’d already done extensive research and study of the play’s text (itself thoroughly researched by playwright Robert Schenkkan), Cranston went on a second visit to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in Austin, TX, and that’s where the person of Lbj really clicked for the actor. “The character is always outside of you until you hopefully allow it to seep in. Then it becomes a part of you,” Cranston told HitFix.

Oscar winner James Lecesne is to step in for Michael McKean on Broadway as the Spinal Tap star recovers from a car accident in hospital.
McKean has been forced to pull out of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway revival of Gore Vidal's The Best Man indefinitely after breaking his leg in the New York street accident on Tuesday.
Lecesne, who wrote Oscar-winning short film Trevor, will replace him onstage as Dick Jensen.
The actor previously portrayed a Washington Post reporter in the play, alongside injured McKean, in his Broadway debut.
Producer Jeffrey Richards tells BroadwayWorld.com, "I have worked with Michael on three previous productions... and he has never missed a performance, and I understand from his team that he has never missed a performance in his career. So this is the kind of first we are reluctant to announce.
"He is currently in stable condition, he has a broken leg."

A number of shows have been announced for the fall season of 2011 that have not materialized. Among them is Lisa D’Amour’s new play Detroit. The play was a hit at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company and was so successful that Jeffrey Richards, a New York based producer, quickly announced that he would be bringing the show to Broadway in a production to open this past fall. Clearly, that production has yet to materialize. When the New York Times inquired what was going on, Mr. Richards cited a hectic producing schedule between Chinglish, Bonnie and Clyde, and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. The problem now is that, in the hesitation, Playwrights Horizons announced three weeks ago that it would be producing an off-Broadway production of the play in the fall of 2012.

Once it closes, the rock musical will have played 120 performances. With a book by Alex Timbers and music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, "Bloody" enjoyed praise from critics but suffered low ticket sales. Jacobs Theatre on Sept. 20 and opened Oct. 13, following its 2008 premiere by the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles and a 2009 run at New York's Public Theater. In a statement announcing the closure, the producers hinted that the musical may have a future away from the Main Stem."The good news is that we believe 'Bloody' will be done throughout the country in the years ahead," Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel said. Benjamin Walker is heading back to the stage - the actor has rejected a mutant role in the new X-men prequel to reprise his part in hit musical Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson on Broadway.
Walker was tipped to play the role of Beast in the comic-book movie X-Men: First Class, but movie bosses have now offered the part to actor Nicholas Hoult.
He will instead reprise his lead role in the hit rock musical about the controversial U.S. president, that ended its off-Broadway run on 27 June.
Jeffrey Richards and Hair's Jerry Frankel will produce the Broadway production, directed by Alex Timbers.
Performances are scheduled to begin on 21 September.
Complete casting will be announced at a later date.

Same language, different cultures. It's the conclusion Broadway producers often have reached when hit plays have been shipped from London to New York, either intact or in recast incarnations struck from the same template, only to suffer premature deaths at the U.S. boxoffice.
For every "The History Boys" there has been a "Coram Boy," for every "Frost/Nixon" a "Democracy," for every "Red" an "Enron."
Even star casting, that fail-safe of every Broadway investor, has proved unreliable.
Jude Law propelled last fall's "Hamlet" transfer to the biggest weekly grosses yielded by Shakespeare on Broadway, but when Daniel Radcliffe doffed his "Harry Potter" cloak to frolic naked with horses in 2008's "Equus" revival, the excitement in New York never quite matched the production's sellout West End business.
Rave reviews often are not enough to pay for transatlantic passage.
The regal smackdown last season between Janet McTeer and Harriet Walter in "Mary Stuart" had critics swooning,...

Kerry Washington and James Spader's Broadway play Race has been deemed a huge success - theatre bosses have recouped their $2.5 million (£1.6 million) production costs just four months after it opened.
The controversial David Mamet play, about a pair of lawyers asked to defend a white man accused of raping a black woman, opened in New York last December. The production also stars David Alan Grier and Richard Thomas.
And the show has been such a big hit with New York theatre fans, producers have already earned back their multi-million dollar investment, according to producer Jeffrey Richards.
Race joins a small group of Broadway plays that have defied the odds of a worldwide financial crisis to become financial successes this season - including Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig's drama, A Steady Rain.
Race is scheduled to end its limited engagement on 13 June.

British actor Sir Patrick Stewart is returning to Broadway - he's to star in award-winning playwright David Mamet's next New York stage production this autumn.
The X-Men star will begin rehearsing for his role in the revival of A Life In The Theatre on 23 August, according to producer Jeffrey Richards.
A Life In the Theatre, about the relationship between an older performer and a younger actor, was first seen in Chicago, Illinois in 1977 and was later performed off-Broadway.
Neil Pepe, who took charge of the 2008 Broadway revival of Mamet's Speed-the-Plow, will direct. Stewart's younger co-star has yet to be cast.
The veteran star was last seen on Broadway in 2008, playing the title character in Macbeth.

New York – The abrupt closing Sunday of Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" after only nine performances has cast a brief, uneasy shadow over Broadway's fall season, ironically one of the busiest in years. And the revival's collapse has had a ripple effect, forcing the cancellation of a second Simon production, "Broadway Bound," which was to have opened at the same theater (the Nederlander) in December and then run in repertory with "Brighton Beach.""A lot of nice people on stage and off will be out of work and a lot of good partners and investors will have lost a great deal of money," producers Emanuel Azenberg and Ira Pittelman said in a statement. "They all deserve better. It makes us sad."Yet its failure — the shortest run ever for a Simon play on Broadway — stands in contrast to the healthy box-office activity of several star-driven productions such as "A Steady Rain,...
