Exclusive: FX is developing a half-hour comedy series based on the 2021 This American Life segment “I Was a Teenage Smuggler.” The series will be penned by Joanna Calo, Carlos López Estrada and the story’s reporter Kevin Sieff. They will serve also executive produce alongside Ira Glass and Alissa Shipp of This American Life.
FX had no comment.
The series will follow a group of Mexican teens who thanks to a loophole in U.S. immigration law that prevents anyone under 18 from being prosecuted, are enlisted by cartels to smuggle migrants across the border. The teens soon find themselves making unfathomable amounts of money and living the lives of their dreams but with an ever-ticking clock until they are legally considered adults.
Estrada is also attached to direct the pilot and produces via his Antigravity Academy banner.

HBO is in development on a limited series based on the third season of Sarah Koenig’s podcast “Serial,” with LeBron James among the executive producers.
The series will examine the criminal justice system at work in Cleveland, Ohio. Following a young cop and the man he’s accused of beating, it illuminates the deeply flawed inner workings of a middle-American courthouse and how the system impacts every person it touches: cops, lawyers and citizens accused of and victimized by crimes.
James is a native of nearby Akron, Ohio, and played 11 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Shola Amoo will write and direct the series, with Koenig executive producing as well. Other executive producers include Emmanuel Dzotsi and Alissa Shipp of Serial Productions, Maverick Carter, Kary Antholis for Crime Story Media and Eric Oberland and Jamal Henderson from The SpringHill Company.

HBO is developing the third season of the hit podcast “Serial” as a limited series, with LeBron James onboard the project as an executive producer.
The potential series will examine the criminal justice system at work in Cleveland, Ohio. Following a young cop and the man he’s accused of beating, it dives into the inner workings of a middle-American courthouse and how the system impacts every person it touches: cop, lawyer, and citizens accused of and victimized by crimes.
Shola Amoo is attached to write, direct, and executive produce. James will executive produce under his SpringHill Company banner along with Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, and Eric Oberland. Sarah Koenig, Emmanuel Dzotsi, and Alissa Shipp of Serial Productions will also executive produce alongside Kary Antholis for Crime Story Media, LLC.
Should the project go to series, it would not be the first time that “Serial” has been brought to HBO.

The podcast-to-tv boom continues with HBO adapting the third season of Serial as a limited series.
The network is developing the remake with rising writer/director Shola Amoo and exec produced by Lebron James and former HBO exec Kary Antholis.
The third season of the award-winning podcast, which arguably set in motion the current boom for non-fiction audio series, was set in the Cleveland justice system. Unlike the first two seasons, which featured one case, it looked at the system overall with focuses on cases before the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas such as a woman who accidentally hits a police officer after being assaulted in a bar and a young African American man who is assaulted by police officers for being in possession of marijuana.

Issa Rae and Adam McKay are teaming up to adapt the Serial Productions podcast “Nice White Parents” into a half-hour series at HBO, Variety has learned.
The project has received a pilot commitment at the premium cabler. The show is described as a satirical look at the conflict and comedy that arise when highly resourced white parents, who claim to have the best intentions, wield their influence over generations of black and brown students within the NY public school system.
The search is currently on for a showrunner for the project. Rae and Montrel McKay will executive produce via the new production company, HooRae. Adam McKay and Todd Schulman will executive produce via Hyperobject Industries, which is currently under a first-look deal with HBO. Chana Joffe-Walt, Julie Snyder, Alissa Shipp, and Sarah Koenig of Serial Productions will also executive produce along with Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry of 3 Arts Entertainment.

Following a Sundance Film Festival debut in January, Netflix unveiled Come Sunday, its true-life religious story of the Rev. Carlton Pearson, over the weekend on its streaming service and in some theaters. I caught it Sunday (naturally), but the low-energy dramatics didn’t grab me, with the exception of the lead performance from the always reliable Chiwetel Ejiofor as Pearson, a media-age preacher caught up in a crisis of conscience.
Based on This American Life’s segment entitled “Heretics” that focused on Pearson and the controversial decision to tell his flock that Hell doesn’t exist, director Joshua Marston (who made an impressive first film in 2004 with Maria Full of Grace but has largely worked in television since) and screenwriter Marcus Hinchey struggle to give the compelling true story of Pearson some much-needed dramatic mojo. A little more life should have been poured into the biopic which, appropriately for Netflix if not Sundance,...

The upcoming Netflix film Come Sunday will begin streaming on April 13, 2018 and we are pleased to share the trailer for your viewing pleasure. The film follows internationally-renowned pastor Carlton Pearson — experiencing a crisis of faith — who risks his church, family and future when he questions church doctrine and finds himself branded a modern-day heretic. Even though Come Sunday is based on actual events, the film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to mixed critical reception.
Come Sunday is directed by Joshua Marston and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Martin Sheen, Jason Segel, Condola Rashad, Lakeith Stanfield and Danny Glover. The film was written by Marcus Hinchey and produced by Ira Glass, Julie Goldstein, Alissa Shipp and James D. Stern. Here’s the trailer, along with the official synopsis and some images for the film below:

Danny Glover has joined the cast of Come Sunday – the upcoming Netflix film that tells the true story of evangelical minister Carlton Pearson, who built one of the largest churches in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and then lost everything as a result of his evolving faith. The tale was explored in a 2005 episode of This American Life, and it is this work that Come Sunday will largely use as source material.
Carlton Pearson became a renowned evangelical minister in Tulsa, having been mentored by televangelist Oral Roberts. At the height of its success, during the 1990s, the church that Pearson formed had a congregation estimated at over 6000 people. That congregation began to dwindle, however, when Pearson changed his teachings – asserting that hell did not exist in the traditionally taught sense.
Pearson publicly declared that, rather than being an eternity of pain and suffering, he believed that hell is created during our lifetimes,...

Indie filmmaker Lynn Shelton ("Laggies," "Your Sister's Sister," "Humpday") is teaming with "This American Life" for a film based on "The Incredible Case of the Pi Moms" radio report, a stranger than fiction style true story about a private investigation agency scandal.
Shelton would direct the film about the "Charlie's Angels"-esque agency, staffed by hot soccer moms and run by a charismatic ex-cop turned P.I. with dreams of mounting his own Lifetime reality series about the agency.
The media loved the agency which looked into insurance scams and cheating husbands, but it actually turned out to be a front - the ex cop was in league with a local drug enforcement official to sell drugs that had been confiscated by the police. The soccer moms were said to be oblivious to the drug conspiracy.
The original story was revealed in an hourlong report for "This American Life" by Joshua Bearman,...

Jeffrey Wright is in talks to play Carlton Pearson and Robert Redford is "in discussions" to star as Oral Roberts in the Jonathan Demme-helmed true story drama "Come Sunday" for Endgame Entertainment.
Formerly titled "Heretics" when it was setup with Marc Forster as helmer, the film chronicles Pearson, a renowned Oklahamoa evangelical minister who stirs up controversy with his revelation that there is no hell.
He loses everything and must rebuild his church and his family and find his own personal faith. Roberts, an early pioneer of TV evangelism, served as Pearson's mentor.
Marcus Hinchey ("All Good Things") wrote the screenplay based on a 2005 This American Life broadcast. James D. Stern, Ira Glass and Alissa Shipp will produce.
Filming aims to begin in Spring 2015.

Tim Robbins will probably always be more famous as an actor than as a director, but he's had a pretty good run behind the camera as well, directing the 90s classic Dead Man Walking along with the TV movie Possible Side Effects and even two episodes of the HBO series Treme. Maybe it's that HBO work that's inspiring him to get his first film into theaters since 1999's Cradle Will Rock-- Robbins has signed a deal to direct an adaptation of the short story Wenceslas Square, which will become a feature film called City of Lies.
