AMC has passed on White City, its geopolitical drama pilot directed and executive produced by Stephen Gaghan. Focused on Western diplomats and journalists living in Afghanistan, the show came from co-writers/co-executive producers Nick McDonell, a novelist and journalist who has covered Iraq and Afghanistan for Time, and John Dempsey, former longtime resident of Kabul and senior adviser on Afghanistan to the late U.S. diplomat Richard C. AMC pilot “White City” has cast Tim Peper as its star. Josh Pence and Mercedes Mason have also joined the cast. The drama is set in Afghanistan and follows Western journalists and diplomats living in the country. At the center is Peper’s Jon Liston, a man who has seen many of the terrible things happening in Kabul where he has lived for almost a decade. Lizzie Ghaffari (Mason) and Tommie Pierson (Pence) are also fixtures in Kabul. She is the new deputy political counselor at the Us Embassy and he is a New York Times reporter. It turns out it is all about who you know, after all – as Academy Award winner Stephen Gaghan is about to demonstrate, by bringing new drama White City to AMC. He will direct the pilot and serve as co-executive producer on the geo-political drama about Western diplomats and journalists in Afghanistan.
The central character will be Jon Liston, described as a ‘war junkie’ who has spent most of a decade in Kabul, up close and personal to the violence and destruction. The notable thing about this new series is that it comes from individuals who have done just that – and have spent time living in the same situation as their leading character.
Co-writers and co-executive producers Nick McDonell and John Dempsey have, it seems, pooled their collective experiences to create a thrilling new drama for the network. McDonell is a novelist and journalist with experience in Iraq and Afghanistan for Time Magazine,...

AMC has found a director for Afghanistan drama White City. The project, recently ordered to pilot, will be helmed by Stephen Gaghan. The writer and director, perhaps best known for his Oscar-winning adapted screenplay for Steven Soderberg's Traffic, also will serve as an executive producer on the project, which comes from novelist Nick McDonell and politico John Dempsey. Chris Mundy and Tom Freston also serve as executive producers. "Nick and John were actually staying at my house, fresh out of Kabul, when they were going around pitching the show," said Gaghan, who had exceptionally flattering words for

The tangled, complex nature of American foreign policy in the Middle East has proven to be extremely fertile ground for filmmakers over the past few years. FX’s Tyrant is currently exploring the geopolitics of a fictional Middle Eastern nation with shades of Iraq and Afghanistan, The Hurt Locker won an Oscar for tackling the dangerous days of a bomb squad in Iraq and Syriana dealt with issues of oil politics, to name a few of many. Now, AMC is gearing up for its own geopolitical drama by ordering a pilot for White City.
Hailing from co-writers and co-executive producers Nick McDonell, a journalist and novelist who has written about Iraq and Afghanistan for Time, and John Dempsey, senior advisor on Afghanistan to the late U.S. diplomat Richard C. Bret Easton Ellis by way of Gossip Girl, Reefer Madness, and in the cataclysmic finale, Alejandro Gonzaléz Iñárittu, Joel Schumacher’s laughable Twelve could be called The Lost Boys (And Girls) if he hadn’t already used that title 23 years ago. Based on Nick McDonell’s novel, the film marinates in the glamour and ennui of Upper East Side brats who indulge in sex, designer drugs, and wild bacchanals while their parents are out yachting in some far-flung locale. Working from a script by Jordan Melamed—whose one feature as a director, 2001’s underrated Manic, dealt ...

Whenever I see something like "Gossip Girl" or "Pretty Little Liars" or "The Hills," it makes me die inside. Because that's teaching teens if you want to be cool, you do coke and fuck everyone. All while wearing clothes that cost an entire summer job salary. Because you're nothing unless you have someone else inside you. It's the entire mantra of the fashionistas that fill magazines -- both advertisements and content -- that pretty and money are the only commodities you need to succeed in life. Thus came Nick McDonell onto the scene, the privileged son of high-profile parents, who scribbled his first novel Twelve at the precocious age of 17. People praised it because that's what rich people do; they take E and suck each others' cocks. We know this because we've watched the online upskirt shots and camera phone videos of Lindsay Lohan blowing a record producer's nephew on a yacht,...

I remember strolling through my college bookstore during my freshman year, leafing through just about any book I brushed against in an attempt to fill my burgeoning brain with all the world's knowledge. My fingers didn't spill over Nick McDonell's Twelve so much as they stubbed into it, and as I reflexively peeled back the front cover of the previously loved novel, I saw that a former owner had written the following on the first page: "This is a very, very horrible book." Okay, so maybe we can just call it "used." I left it there on the shelf in the hopes that I could revisit it over the course of the year and see how long it might take for someone to ignore its warning. By the time I returned the next day the book had already been sold. Evidently -- and to our collective misfortune -- that...

There’s much to be annoyed by in “Twelve.” There’s the adolescent novel on which it’s based — adolescent because Nick McDonell wrote it when he was 17 with the repetitive rat-a-tat prattle of a 17-year-old’s summer diary. There’s the Kiefer Sutherland voiceover that tries to lend some gravity to this drivel by narrating what we can plainly see on film for ourselves. There are the privileged prep-school snots who think nothing of dropping a grand on one night’s worth of narcotics or shamelessly manipulating the less popular and less beautiful to get what they want. There’s the amateur-hour direction by Joel Schumacher, who should know better than to convey drug highs with clichéd distorted imagery or flashbacks with incongruous, bare, theatrical stages.

Ok, so picture "Gossip Girl." You've got the rich prep-school kids running around Manhattan with no credible authority figures in sight, and their money apparently gives them access to things no normal teenager could have. Got it?
Ok, now picture Nate (Chace Crawford) as a drug dealer and Emma Roberts as a more upstanding Serena, then throw in 50 Cent and a much grittier style of filmmaking. Welcome to "Twelve," which opens in limited release (a couple hundred theaters) on Friday (Aug. 6).
Crawford stars as a young drug dealer named White Mike, who peddles weed and other substances to Manhattan's wealthy kids but dreams of Bigger Things. Roberts ("Valentine's Day") is the girl he wants to protect from his world, and Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent) is a higher-level dealer, who pushes Mike to sell a designer drug called Twelve to his customers.

Primed with their arsenal of half-baked apathy and burnout glamour, Manhattan's young and wealthy grow weary in Joel Schumacher's adaptation of Nick McDonell's novel, Twelve. I spoke with director Joel Schumacher about the project.

The most common complaint about movies adapted from novels is that they're not faithful enough to their source material. Joel Schumacher's "Twelve" is so weirdly and destructively faithful that it seems like it an experimental film designed to show people why excessively dutiful adaptations are a bad idea. Schumacher took author Nick McDonell's heavily stylized narration (which you can get a taste of here) and recreated it exactly in the film. So while we see Chace Crawford walking the streets of New York City as drug dealer White Mike we hear narrator Kiefer Sutherland say things like "White Mike has never smoked a cigarette in his life," or "White Mike loves rooftops."
The idea that film is a visual medium is one of the fundamental principles of cinema. Students learn on the first day of film school that their work should show, not tell. Schumacher's structure throws that out the window.

Very few films are as good as the book, but that still doesn't excuse an absolute travesty of a book-to-film adaptation. The unfortunate thing is Twelve had such unbelievable on screen potential. Not only is the subject matter widely appealing -- pretty people doing bad things -- but it has a stellar cast to go with it. All director Joel Schumacher had to do was follow the story, trim a little fat and he would have ended up with a solid production. But he and screenwriter Jordan Melamed just went about it all wrong, making Twelve an extended episode of Gossip Girl rather than a dark and foreboding tale.

I was first drawn to the novel Twelve by Nick McDonell when it was first published as I had read the critical hype that surrounded the book and the favourable comparisons to one of my favourite authors, Bret Easton Ellis.
Time Out described the book as “A brilliant satirical debut”, Germaine Greer described it as “A small masterpiece” and The New York Times said Twelve was ”As fast as speed, as relentless as acid”. Sadly in my opinion the book in no way lived up to this hype. I found Nick McDonell’s debut to be incredibly underwhelming and nowhere near as good as Less Than Zero, a book it was constantly compared to.
This year Sundance premièred Joel Schumaker’s film adaptation of the book and the response to the film by many critics appeared to be similar to my response to the book.

"Twelve" is one of the movies that I was really disappointed about missing when I didn't attend this year's Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Joel Schumacher and adapted from the book by Nick McDonell, "Twelve" follows White Mike (Chace Crawford), a 17-year-old "philosophical drug dealer" who comes from a wealthy family. The story follows Mike as he takes off from his senior year at high school to focus on his business, and on trying to find a balance between his two lives.
I dig the feel of the movie that I get from the below trailer, which premieres today exclusively on MTV. You've got a great cast here too, including Emma Roberts, 50 Cent and Rory Culkin. "Twelve" arrives in theaters on July 30, 2010.

Chace Crawford was arrested this morning for possession of marijuana. Coincidently, it happens to be the same day his new trailer for Twelve was released. In the movie, Chace happens to play a “philosophical drug dealer” named White Mike. The movie got a lot of buzz at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Chace Crawford Arrested for Drugs! The film is based on the critically acclaimed novel by Nick McDonell, written when he was only 17 years old. The film chronicles the life of a high school dropout-turned-drug dealer, White Mike. "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford was arrested in Plano, Texas, for possession of marijuana early Friday (June 4), local police confirmed to MTV News.
The police department's public information officer confirmed that Crawford, 24, was released on bond after being arrested shortly after midnight for possessing under two ounces of marijuana.
At press time, reps for the actor had not responded to MTV News' requests for comment.
Unnamed sources reportedly told TMZ.com that Crawford was in a car with a friend when he was busted, and police found a single marijuana cigarette.
Ironically, Crawford plays a drug dealer in the forthcoming film "Twelve," based on Nick McDonell's novel (see a new trailer for the film right here). The indie flick, in which 50 Cent co-stars, has Crawford playing White Mike,...

Chace Crawford claims his new movie 'Twelve' is a ''grittier'' version of 'Gossip Girl'. The 24-year-old actor admits many people may be expecting the movie to be like the television show he is famous for, but there is a lot more to it. He said: ''It's a Joel Schumacher film I shot about a year ago. On the surface it seems like a kind of 'Gossip Girl' esque film but it's a lot grittier.'' Chace plays White Mike in the movie, which is an adaptation of the Nick McDonell book of the same name, and he claims it is a ''cool'' film He ..

Short answer: Oh, it's definitely possible since we at least had some ridiculously cheesy Arnold Schwarzenegger one-liners to warm our movie-loving hearts (and souls) in Batman & Robin. Then again, Batman & Robin didn't have skinny 17-year-old white girls doing drugs and 50 Cent at the same time. You know something is off when your gritty, drug-fueled ensemble drama premieres at the Sundance Film Festival to a crowd full of critics who can't stop laughing. I happened to be one of the folks in that first press screening for Joel Schumacher's Twelve (read our review), and I can tell you straight up that this flick is a mess. Not only are there too many characters and too many random storylines, but you don't care about any of it.

Word out of Sundance concerning Joel Schumacher’s teen drug bonanza Twelve wasn’t overwhelming and now those of us who weren’t there have a chance to see what all the fuss, or not, is about.
The Playlist pointed us to the new trailer for the film which stars Chace Crawford, Mary Jane-in-waiting Emma Roberts and Keifer Sutherland and having watched this one a few times I’m still not entirely clear what or who this film is about, save the premise that there’s murder and drugs on the agenda.
Schumacher’s Batman fuelled fall from grace may have hurt his career but the man has no problem attracting funding and star names onto his projects, and though Twelve is a relatively low budget enterprise Nick McDonell’s novel about rich kids on drugs may draw in the Twilight averse as it is being released against the third Twilight film – Eclipse.

Man this looks good. Rich kids, hot broads, and drugs. Just what I like.
Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Nick McDonell, written when he was only 17 years old, Twelve is a chilling chronicle of privileged urban adolescence on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Set over spring break, the story follows White Mike, a kid with unlimited potential, who has dropped out of his senior year of high school and sells marijuana to his rich, spoiled peers. When his cousin is brutally murdered in an east Harlem project, and his best friend is arrested for the crime, White Mike is hurled on a collision course with his own destiny.

This week’s audio-free trailer offering comes to us a bit early but, man, what a doozy. I may be uniquely qualified to watch the trailer for Twelve sans sound, as I’ve read the book it’s based on and giddily ate up the bevy of (mostly awful) reviews that poured out after its Sundance review. Twelve made a splash just from its inception (based on the book by Nick McDonell, which was, in turn, it’s own special splashy offering; McDonell famously penned the book at age seventeen, and its gritty subject matter captured the literary world. It bored me, but most books that feel vaguely stunt-y tend to do that), mainly because director Joel Schumacher was the one who ushered it to screen. The results? Not so good.

Hannover House has just announced they will release Joel Schumacher's Twelve on July 2nd, pitting it in direct competition with Paramount and Nickelodeon's The Last Airbender and Summit's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which opens on June 30, the Wednesday prior.
The move is said to be in an attempt to offer counter-programming to the to Eclipse with a marketing strategy targeting young adults, 18 to 34 years old, with internet, social networking and other alternative media dominating over traditional advertising modes. And will to read the quotes from Hannover C.E.O. Eric Parkinson, it may not sound like they are looking at a limited release, but in fact they are only pushing for 250 theaters.

During this exclusive interview with MakingOf.com, director Joel Schumacher and actors Chace Crawford, Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson and Emma Roberts discuss their drama "Twelve" which closed this year's Sundance Film Festival. The topics of conversation range from guerilla-style filmmaking to dealing with paparazzi while shooting. Schumacher shares how he kept everything on schedule and managed to shoot six scenes in under 12 hours each day. He also playfully refers to himself as "the oldest living student filmmaker."
"Twelve" was acquired before it screened by Publisher Hanover House for around $2 million. There are plans for a major-market theatrical rollout this year. The adaptation is based on the best-selling novel by Nick McDonell and chronicles the violent and drug-fueled exploits of priviledged Manhattan teens. The ensemble cast includes: Chace Crawford, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson, Ellen Barkin and narration by long-time Schumacher collaborator Kiefer Sutherland.

New couple? Nah....Chace Crawford and Emma Roberts are just in a new movie together! The pair was spotted at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday to promote their new film Twelve, based on the novel by the same name by Nick McDonell. And, according to Page Six, this movie totally blows. Apparently, reports trickling in from the festival claim that audiences were actually "giggling at the film's woefully earnest depiction of rich-kid depravity." Uh-oh. Hopefully Chace's pretty looks can save this one. Check out the new pics of Chace and Emma in our gallery!

Director Joel Schumacher says the 'Gossip Girl' star was 'just right' for the gritty role.

Chace Crawford's "Twelve" won't premiere at the Sundance Film Festival until Friday afternoon (January 29), but the movie has already been snatched up for distribution for a cool $2 million by Hannover House, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
That quick transaction might have more than a little something to do with the talents and public profile of the "Gossip Girl" star, who gets his first chance to take on a gritty, mature role in "Twelve." Based on a novel by Nick McDonell, the indie flick has Crawford playing White Mike, a teenage dropout whose mother has just died and who is selling drugs to his ex-classmates on the gleaming streets of Manhattan's Upper East Side. While our Sundance home page is the place for all our coverage from Park City, here is a brief rundown of what's been going on during the last 24 hours, including Matt Singer's interview with "The Freebie" writer/director Katie Aselton and co-star Dax Shepard and reviews of the Chace Crawford drama "Twelve," the Banksy doc "Exit Through the Gift Shop," Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debut "Jack Goes Boating" and the 3D Aussie doc "Cane Toads 2: The Conquest."
Some were puzzled when Sundance accepted "Batman and Robin" director Joel Schumacher's latest film "Twelve." James Rocchi writes that the concern was justified. Here's an excerpt from his review, which can be found in full here:
Directed by Joel Schumacher ("Batman and Robin," "The Lost Boys"), "Twelve" is unquestionably the funniest film at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival; if only it had been made with that intention. "Twelve"'s ham-handed ineptitude...

Another Sundance, another self-important diatribe into the dangers of drug taking by the rich. Based on an apparently critically acclaimed novel by Nick McDonell, written when he was only 17 years old, "Twelve" explores privileged urban adolescence on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
Set over spring break, the story follows White Mike, a kid with unlimited potential who has dropped out of his senior year of high school and sells drugs to his rich, spoiled peers. When his cousin is brutally murdered in an east Harlem project, and his best friend is arrested for the crime, White Mike has to start coming to terms with his own destiny.
It seems as though a film festival needs legitimacy when it premieres a film full of its own self-importance, and this innocuous, simplistic and overdone movie seems to be so out of touch with the needs of contemporary film audiences.

You wouldn't normally expect a director like Joel Schumacher to be premiering a film at the Sundance Film Festival, but as Schumacher himself points out, his career is full of smaller films that were made for little money and featured young, up-and-coming casts. Twelve looks to continue a Schumacher trend that began with films like St. Elmo's Fire, The Lost Boys and Flatliners when it screens in the Premieres section at Sundance next week.
Featuring a cast that includes Emma Roberts, Chace Crawford, 50 Cent, Zoe Kravitz, Rory Culkin and Kiefer Sutherland (who reunites with Schumacher for a fifth time, and the first since 2002's Phone Booth), Twelve (based on Nick McDonell's novel) is a gritty drama that follows a young drug dealer who finds his life slowly spiral out of control after his best friend is arrested for the murder of his cousin. St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold
Opens: 2010
Cast: Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley
Director: Oliver Parker, Barnaby Thompson
Summary: A rollercoaster-style treasure hunt for the legendary Fritton’s Gold ensues as the feisty and ever-resourceful schoolgirls of St Trinian’s face their most fearsome establishment rivals yet - the villainous Pomfrey and his sidekicks from the women-hating secret society known as AD1.
Analysis: While it didn't travel much beyond the UK, 2007's reboot of the "St Trinian's" franchise nearly doubled its £7 million production budget in sales in the UK alone - making it one of the top grossing independent British films of the past decade. Reviews were decidedly mixed but generally pretty weak at the time, so the greenlighting of a sequel surprised quite a few.

After finishing Nick McDonell.s novel Twelve, it was clear that the story would make for a perfect film adaption. The characters are bleak yet colorful and the book itself unexpectedly compelling. After hearing Chase Crawford was chosen to play the protagonist, White Mike, a drug dealer who never partakes in his own supply, I was skeptical that director Joel Schumacher would abandon the source material in favor of a star-studded cast. These five new photos (via Slash Film) from Twelve have not only given me newfound hope for Crawford, but the entire production as well. The first image, I believe, is Emily Meade as Jessica, a party girl who becomes addicted to the drug Twelve. The second photo features Billy Magnussen as Claude, a 17-year-old fascinated with obscure weaponry, and his male model pal Tobias (Nico Tortorella). The third photo is our main man, White Mike, and his stash.

I know most people shudder at the mere mention of Joel Schumacher's name, but supposedly he's trying something different this time around. Debuting at Sundance in January is Twelve, the newest film directed by Joel Schumacher. Although you probably didn't notice this, we featured the first sales art for Twelve back in May, as there was a huge billboard for it on display in Cannes. The film is set in New York's Upper East Side and is about a young drug dealer who watches as his high-rolling life is dismantled in the wake of his cousin's murder and his best friend's arrest for the crime. It features a cast of young up-and-coming actors. Seen in the photos above are Chace Crawford, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, and Zoë Kravitz. Ellen Barkin and Kiefer Sutherland also star in this. Twelve is based on Nick McDonell's novel of the same name.
