Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 20 premiere.
“Grey’s Anatomy” hit the reset button in the aftermath of its traumatic Season 19 finale, including the exit of one of their own. By the end of the Season 20 premiere, Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) announced he’d be leaving Grey Sloan Memorial to reunite with Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) at her new home in Boston.
His last move as residency director was passing the torch to the now Catherine Fox award-winning Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), effectively bringing the series back to basics with her taking charge of teaching the hospital’s latest class of interns.
“I feel like if anyone can bring these interns back from what just happened, it’s the person who helped create doctors like Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang and Alex Karev,” showrunner Meg Marinis told TheWrap. “Bailey doesn’t always get the credit that she deserves.

The hiatus is almost over!
After nearly a year of being off the air, Grey's Anatomy will return with a thrilling season premiere that will transport us right into the aftermath of Grey's Anatomy Season 19 Episode 20.
And much to our delight, Meredith Grey is back!
ABC has released photos of Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 1, and we can't wait to figure out everything that the season premiere will throw our way.
One of the most exciting things we notice immediately is that Ellen Pompeo and Scott Speedman will be guest-starring in the premiere.
The happy couple professed their love to one another and returned to Boston to continue with their lives.
But that doesn't mean they didn't have unfinished business at Grey Sloan Memorial.
As we know, Meredith Grey is still an authoritative figure at the hospital, especially regarding the intern program.
On top of that, she's Lucas' aunt.

Fans of "Grey's Anatomy" know the show isn't quite the same without Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey, but the long-running medical drama made sure her farewell served as the perfect goodbye. But was it really the end for Meredith?
As previously reported by Variety, viewers saw a lot less of Dr. Grey in season 19 due to the actor's role in a forthcoming Hulu show, "The Orphan," and she officially departed the show in its Feb. 23 episode. Her character returned for the season 19 finale, though - and apparently will be back again.
"It's a little bit of trickery, because I'm not completely gone," Pompeo said during her Variety Actors on Actors sit-down with former castmate Katherine Heigl, published June 6. "Actually, the storyline is very cool. There's a lot of real research that's changing very rapidly about Alzheimer's disease and about what they believe is the cause of Alzheimer's disease.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. We already know that the Season 19 finale of Grey’s Anatomy is going to break our hearts (thank Kevin McKidd and Camilla Luddington for the heads-up). And since Catherine’s cancer has progressed, there would seem to be a good chance that we — and her adoring husband — will lose her.
What lies ahead is “something that’s really going to test Richard like maybe nothing before has up to this point,” Og James Pickens Jr. told TVLine at the ABC drama’s recent PaleyFest panel. “His focus is going to be ushering her on and cheerleading her.

Dr. Levi Schmitt stepped out of the hospital, went to a party and found himself a new love interest on “Grey’s Anatomy.” And that’s just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the character played by Jake Borelli.
Levi has been single for more than a year after stepping away from the first relationship between two gay men to be featured regularly on the long-running ABC medical drama. Fans were passionate about the pairing of Levi (Jake Borelli) and Dr. Nico Kim (Alex Landi) for many seasons but welcomed the arrival of traveling nurse Carlos (Calvin Seabrooks) with messages of support on social media when the character was introduced in the March 9 episode of “Grey’s.”

The Season 19 premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” is titled “Everything Has Changed” — and for good reason. The episode signaled a major shift for Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and for the series as we’ve always known it.
The residency program is being rebuilt after a series of failures that have prompted the hospital to recruit from the bottom of the intern barrel. Not to mention, the series will move forward with much less of it’s main character, as Ellen Pompeo is set to appear in only eight episodes this season.
So, how do you continue “Grey’s Anatomy” without Meredith Grey? Go back to the roots, said showrunner Krista Vernoff.
Below, Vernoff breaks down more about how the writers forged a new path forward for “Grey’s” without its beloved lead at the center, as well as other details about the Season 19 premiere.

Even the stars of Grey's Anatomy can hardly believe the series still has a pulse. Actress and director Debbie Allen—who has played Dr. Catherine Fox since 2011—admits she was surprised to hear that the hit ABC medical drama was renewed for a 19th season. "I thought it was done last season, but the network is like, 'Uh-uh', and the fans are like 'Uh-uh,'" the Fame alum exclusively told E! News' Daily Pop hosts Justin Sylvester and Loni Love on the April 15 episode. Even the show's current season 18 was a shock, Allen said, attributing the renewal to season 17's "incredible" incorporation of the Covid-19...

The fight is on to diagnose and save Richard on Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 20, airing tonight at 9/8c on ABC.
While Maggie, Meredith, and Amelia work together to run tests on Weber, Maggie is checking out the headlines following Richard's claim that he had a cure for cancer.
The internet is ablaze with memes of Richard, as well as negative headlines that make him sound like a conspiracy theorist, according to a new sneak peek of the episode.

"Medical meltdown of the year."

Unfortunately, it also looks like the nightmare will have much more far-reaching consequences.
"Catherine's on the phone with the foundation publicist to try to scrub it all from the internet which isn't really possible," says Meredith chiming in.

Are we about to say goodbye to Richard Weber?
Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 20 picks up in the immediate aftermath of the character being rushed to the hospital with a suspected stroke.
If you watch Grey's Anatomy online, you know Grey's has said goodbye to several stars throughout its 15-year-run, but we don't even know if James Pickens Jr. is saying goodbye to the series.
Back when Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd was killed off, the actor exiting the show was not announced in advance so fans were gobsmacked when the emotional death played out.
What we do know about "Sing It Again" is that everyone will band together with one common goal: Save Richard.
This includes Catherine who initially thought her estranged husband had turned back to alcohol when he claimed to have a cure for cancer at an event.
Their relationship has been on thin ice for months, but...

Mothers and sons, and fathers and daughters. Family was at the center of another emotional hour of this prolific medical drama.
Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 11 got teased as an emotional hour that undoubtedly would bring back that #TearsofGreys, and it was a total feels fest.
Something that Grey's Anatomy has excelled at is stripping away the hustle and bustle and focusing on a handful of central and periphery characters to share stories. The series has an enormous cast, and they often fail to put all of them to proper use.
With bottle episodes and things akin to them, however, they can showcase the best of each person's tremendous talent while allowing the stories to breathe. It strikes the perfect emotional chord that way.

Grey's Anatomy has always loved to fictionalize real medical emergencies, but tonight's episode was really, really real for writer and executive producer Elisabeth Finch. Finch, who wrote tonight's episode and the fall episode "Anybody Have a Map?," modeled Catherine Fox's (Debbie Allen) cancer journey after her own, writing her own experiences into the show and then watching them play out on set and on screen in front of her. That, for her, was the hardest part. "Often when I'm writing things I separate a little bit and don't consciously know that I'm putting in so much of my own personal story, and then I go to set and I hear it over and over and over again.
