Fresh off of the release of their new album Only God Was Above Us, Vampire Weekend made a surprise appearance at a Goose show on Wednesday night. To start their second set at the Port Chester, New York, venue The Capitol Theatre, the jam band brought out the indie vets to rip through “Gen-X Cops” and a 30-minute (!) version of “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.” Stream the entire set below.
“We’re gonna have some special guests come up here,” Goose member Peter Anspach said as the band entered the second hour of their monstrous four-hour-long set. Once Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, and Chris Thomson took the stage, the two bands launched into a jammy, though relatively faithful rendition of the Only God Was Above Us cut “Gen-x Cops.” Vampire Weekend fan-favorite “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” followed, morphing into a half-hour-long jam of grooves and solos.

Vampire Weekend stopped by The Daily Show to perform their recent song, “Mary Boone,” and to chat with host Michael Kosta. During the artsy performance, frontman Ezra Koenig sat on a stool in front of the other musicians, who were accompanied by a choir as footage of New York City played behind them.
“Mary Boone” comes off the rock band’s new LP, Only God Was Above Us, which is out now. During the interview, the musicians discussed the album, as well as their newly-launched podcast Vampire Campfire, which finds...

While Vampire Weekend’s prep-school narratives have toyed with subcultural statements and big ideas about youth and love, singer and chief songwriter Ezra Koenig never seems to be revealing much about himself. That admittedly could make the sweeping emotions that the group’s songs tried to invoke feel trapped behind glass, even on a work of pop craftsmanship as stunning as 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City.
Vampire Weekend’s first album in five years and their first with (most of) their original lineup in more than a decade, Only God Was Above Us doesn’t tell us a whole lot more about the interior lives of Koenig, bassist Chris Baio, or drummer Chris Tomson. What it lacks in confessionals, though, it makes up for with a sharp conceit: a Cold War allegory about romance, contrasting references to conflict in Eastern Europe and Russia with domestic issues and memories.

Vampire Weekend have played around with a slightly “punky,” slightly “jammy”side project in their free time, band members Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson, and Chris Baio told the New York Times.
According to Tomson, the extra-curriculars began as a way to blow off steam during the pandemic. “The world had stopped working and a lot of what we normally do was just not being done,” Tomson recalled. “There was something about just playing with no expectation — to just play with my two very close friends without an agenda.”

Baio added, “It’s very rare for people in a band of our size to be alone together. No engineer, no tour manager, nothing like that. It felt like being at the outset of the band again. And we did that for three years and change, whenever we were all in town.”

Vampire Weekend make sense of how historical examples of cruelty have become “classical” with time on an upbeat new song, “Classical.” The song comes off their upcoming album Only God Was Above Us, due out April 5.
Between frontman Ezra Koenig’s catchy, squeaky guitar melody and Henry Solomon’s wild saxophone solo, Koenig sings about war, peace, and abandoned ruins of temples, describing history as “a bleak sunrise.” The music sort of falls apart at the end, on purpose.

Vampire Weekend are officially back with the announcement of their new album, Only God Was Above Us, out April 5th via Columbia Records.
Marking Vampire Weekend’s first full-length in five years, Only God Was Above Us clocks in at 10 tracks. Inspired by 20th-century New York City, the album was recorded in Manhattan, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo, with vocalist/guitarist Ezra Koenig sharing production duties with longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid. It was mixed by Dave Fridmann and mastered by Emily Lazar.
Koenig penned the majority of the lyrics to Only God Was Above Us in 2019-2020, and spent the next five years with bandmates Chris Baio and Chris Tomson fleshing out the lyrical and melodic structures. The album is described in a press release as “direct yet complex, showing the band at once at its grittiest, and also at its most beautiful and melodic.”

The wait for VW5 is almost over: Vampire Weekend have confirmed that their next album is “done.”
Back in June, Vampire Weekend announced a new vinyl series in which they’d be sharing exclusive live LPs along with accompanying newsletters. In that first newsletter, the band wrote that their upcoming project was “close to done.” Now, in an edition shared on Thursday (December 14th), bassist Chris Baio wrote that, “LP5 Is Done.”
Baio didn’t go into much more detail on what to expect from the record itself, but he did reflect on recently hosting the “first ever Vampire Weekend Corporate Retreat” along the coast of Southern Oregon, and it seems like the band cooked up some good ideas along the way.
“It was a dream to show my guys around a region of the country I have fallen in love with over the past few years,” Baio wrote. “We...

At 18 songs in under an hour, Vampire Weekend’s first album in six years sounds at first like a manic effort to make up lost time. Singer-guitarist Ezra Koenig, the band’s composer-lyricist and a co-producer on virtually every track, has stuffed his hooks and bridges with so many change-ups in rhythm, guitar tone and dramatic instrumental flourish that, by the finish, you feel like you’ve been whipped through a modern-pop homage to the Beatles’ Abbey Road medley – twice over.

You know how the coolest people in college were the kids who disavowed all that social climbing and just, you know, talked about socialism with their folk music groups? (Your experience may vary.) Well, if Vampire Weekend is the successful band version of those music groups (and it is), then Bernie Sanders is the cool professor who shows up at all their concerts. Sanders appeared with Vampire Weekend — minus their keyboardist, Rostom Batmanglij, who recently left the group, as well as their bassist Chris Baio, who's on tour with his side band — in Iowa for a campaign rally last night. Also in attendance: Dirty Projectors' Dave Longstreth, comedy duo the Lucas Brothers, and the Hawkapellas, an all-female a cappella group from the University of Iowa. Watch Sanders swing his arms to the music. Watch nearly every member of the crowd choose a different direction in which to sway. There's...

The New Girlfriend
Written & Directed by François Ozon
France, 2014
The latest from prolific French auteur François Ozon opens on a somber note as Claire (Anaïs Demoustier) recounts her lifelong friendship with the deceased Laura (Isild Le Besco), whose untimely death has left her grieving husband David (Romain Duris) alone with their infant daughter. Shortly after the funeral, Claire checks in on the widower and finds him all made up, wearing Laura’s dress and a blonde wig to boot. Promising not to tell her husband Gilles (Raphaël Personnaz) about David’s cross-dressing, Claire finds herself entering uncharted territory with her late friend’s husband and no one to confide in. Beautifully shot with an eye for the little details that we associate with femininity, the film is as much an exploration of the rituals and meanings of female friendships as it is of gender,...

Somebody Up There Likes Me
Directed by Bob Byington
Written by Bob Byington
USA, 2012
It may seem like a fool’s errand to ascribe deeper meaning to a 75-minute lark of a movie, but it’s not terribly difficult to spot a theme recurring throughout Somebody Up There Likes Me, specific to the very meaning of life. Of course, because this comedy (closer to an anti-comedy, really) is content staying in the lowest possible key throughout its brief running time, the analysis of what it is to be an adult in the modern world isn’t too incisive. Still, Somebody Up There Likes Me is consistently entertaining enough to get by.
Keith Poulson plays Max, an aimless young waiter in Los Angeles who’s given a mysterious briefcase one day, which he’s instructed not to open. So, of course, he opens it as soon as he has a chance.

The pairing of Steve Buscemi and Vampire Weekend might not seem immediately organic, but as it turns out, bassist Chris Baio is distantly related to the actor. Small world. Anyway, they've used that connection to rope Buscemi into directing their upcoming concert webcast and to help get the word out, they've cut together a pretty amusing little promo. In the five minute spot, we see Buscemi meeting the guys for the first time and proceeding to get off on the wrong foot immediately, mistaking which Chris he's related to, asking Rostam Batmanglij if he's the DJ (lol) and then grilling the group about the references in their songs and what they all mean. It's pretty amusing stuff, and best of all this is only episode one, which means there's probably a couple more on the way. The concert will stream on YouTube/Vevo on April 28th. Steve Buscemi wants to be in a band. Specifically Vampire Weekend only to, y'know, help them reach a broader audience. The actor/director will be helming Vampire Weekend's Amex Unstaged concert, webcast live on April 28 at 9 p.m. Est. In a promo clip for the show, it is revealed that Buscemi and Vw's Chris Baio are distantly related, and it's a riff on that: how would a weird act and behave toward somebody that they're supposedly blood-relative to? Get your strange hugs out now, it's gonna get bumpy. Vampire Weekend's third album "Vampires of the Modern City" will be out May...

Here's your unlikely actor/director and musician pairing for the day: Steve Buscemi and Vampire Weekend. It you believe a recent tweet from the band, Buscemi is a distant cousin of the bassist Chris Baio (who is actually related Scott Baio) but mostly, they were just excited to team up with with actor for some "showbiz synergy." Well, they have. The American Express Unstaged series -- which in the past has brought together Terry Gilliam and Arcade Fire, David Lynch and Duran Duran and Werner Herzog and The Killers, among others -- will now present a Vampire Weekend concert webcast directed by Buscemi. Of course, he's already an established filmmaker with a fair share of movies and TV shows under his belt, but it will be his first time doing this sort of thing. But at the very least, he appears to be a fan, recently joining the band during...

Tribeca Film has aquired SXSW comedy "Somebody Up There Likes Me," starring Keith Poulson, Nick Offerman ("Parks & Recreation") and Jess Weixler ("Teeth"), and featuring rotoscoped sequences courtesy of Bob Sabiston ("A Scanner Darkly"). Check out the trailer below. In the film, Bob Byington ("Harmony and Me," "Rso [Registered Sex Offender]") mixes actors with non-pros in this fable about a man watching his life pass by. Max (Keith Poulson) and his chum Sal (Nick Offerman) and the woman they love, Lyla (Jess Weixler), stumble through thirty-five years of various unsatisfying relationships. Vampire Weekend’s Chris Baio provides the score for the film, which is produced by Offerman. Tribeca Films plans a spring 2013 theatrical release date, with the usual on-demand platforms of iTunes, Amazon, et al.

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.
