Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is not going anywhere anytime soon. The sci-fi series has already been renewed for a fourth season ahead of its season three release. Paramount+ previously renewed the series for a third season ahead of its season two premiere in March 2023. The end of animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks was also announced.
The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series, which stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, Melissa Navia, and Bruce Horak, follows Captain Christopher Pike (Mount) and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise, before Kirk's time as Captain in the original Star Trek series.

"Star Trek" fans have seen quite a few new uniforms on "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," including standard and dress uniforms for the crew of the Enterprise and live-action versions of the "Star Trek: Lower Decks" uniforms, but one character's uniform offered something totally unique to the franchise. A new Chief Engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise joined the crew in season 2 of "Strange New Worlds," played by comedy legend (and "Star Trek" rookie!) Carol Kane, and she was given a new accessory for her uniform that made Starfleet history.
While joining host Wil Wheaton on "The Ready Room," a web series that dives into the world of "Star Trek" and provides interviews and behind-the-scenes peeks, Kane shared that she was lucky enough to be the recipient of a unique item for her Starfleet uniform. Kane's character, Commander Pelia, is a Lanthanite who has lived for centuries, even hiding...

At the end of the first season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," the U.S.S. Enterprise had lost its chief engineer, Lieutenant Hemmer (Bruce Horak), to a Gorn egg that had been implanted inside his body. At the beginning of the second season, audiences were introduced to a new character named Pelia (Carol Kane) an engineer who had no intention of serving on board the ship. After a merry misadventure, Pelia decided she liked the Enterprise and its crew and signed onto a senior role on the ship. Pelia was unlike many of the more rule-oriented characters on "Strange New World," rarely abiding by protocol, hoarding strange art artifacts in her room, and generally ignoring orders. She was a wonderful addition to the show, and a worthy successor to the already-great Hemmer.

"Star Trek" sure knows how to celebrate in style. Star Trek Day usually tends to be a huge deal, but this year has all the makings of a can't-miss event for Trekkies both old and new. We recently brought you the news of all the planned festivities and how to enjoy them either online or even in person, but that's not all that this venerated franchise has hidden up its sleeve. Set phasers to spoilers: This article discusses events from the season 2 finale of "Strange New Worlds."
If it seems like every generation of "Star Trek" must always contend with their own unique existential threat, that's because they do. For James T. Kirk in "The Original Series," real-world Cold War anxieties manifested themselves through the fearsome Klingon Empire and their numerous skirmishes with Starfleet as the two galactic powers constantly stood on the brink of all-out war. For Jean-Luc Picard in "The Next Generation," the horrifying Borg Collective instantly became the franchise's most iconic villain -- not only as a physical threat, but one that channeled technological fears of the 21st Century by stripping away our very identities through their assimilation tactics. And for Benjamin Sisko in "Deep Space Nine," no greater threat than the Dominion would eventually land on Federation borders, bringing a darker and more paranoia-driven flavor to "Trek...

After a blockbuster musical episode, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is closing out its second season in much more serious fashion. The sci-fi series’ season finale “Hegemony” will pit the crew of the USS Enterprise against a classic enemy of old. And in a first look at the finale, exclusively shared with IndieWire, it’s revealed that said enemy is one of the most dangerous in the “Star Trek” galaxy: the Gorn.
The Gorn, a race of hostile reptellian humanoid aliens, first appeared in “Arena,” one of the most iconic episodes of Gene Roddenberry’s science fiction series. In “Strange New Worlds,” the species appeared twice in the show’s first season: “Memento Mori,” where a Gorn military ship attacks the Enterprise, and “All Those Who Wonder,” where hatchlings from the species caused the death of Enterprise engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak). The finale marks the first and only appearance of the species,...

Klingons have a brutal reputation as fearsome warriors, but this week’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds proved they could also be fierce singers and dancers.
The usually gruff humanoids made a brief but memorable appearance in the musical episode — with a surprise cameo from Hemmer portrayer Bruce Horak as General Garkog — reluctantly performing a catchy boy band number after being hailed. According to co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman, a different version of that fun segment exists somewhere in the ether.

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
Andorian chief engineer Hemmer was one of the highlights of the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, thanks in large part to actor Bruce Horak’s gruff sweetness. Fans truly felt the loss when Hemmer sacrificed himself to save the crew from the Gorn in “All Those Who Wander,” even if it made way for the equally wonderful Carol Kane as new chief engineer Pelia.
But that didn’t mark the end of Horak’s time in Star Trek. We got a brief glimpse of Hemmer as both a zombie projection and a priority one YouTube video in season 2’s “Lost in Translation,” as Uhura called upon the teaching of her old friend to solve a complex communication problem. Now, Horak is back in the new musical episode, “Subspace Rhapsody,” but not as Hemmer.

As Strange New Worlds inches closer and closer to the timeframe of Star Trek: The Original Series, the amount of references to that iconic show are naturally increasing, almost exponentially. Although we’re still firmly in 2259, the world of 2265 – and Kirk’s Enterprise – seem right around the corner. In the Uhura-centric adventure, “Lost in Translation,” Paul Wesley returns as James T. Kirk, this time finally from the Prime Universe. In addition to having a standalone adventure with Uhura, the return of Kirk to Strange New Worlds also brings a lot of Trekkie loose ends closer together.
Here are all the big canon references and Easter eggs we caught in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6, “Lost in Translation.”

Trekkies who are a little behind the ball (or simply don't feel like subscribing to Paramount+) now have a window of opportunity to watch some of the most widely-acclaimed "Star Trek" in a long, long time for the low, low price of free. The folks at Paramount have decided to upload the entire first season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" to YouTube for anyone to watch. Yes, this is the official Paramount+ YouTube channel, so no funny business going on here. Just a little treat from the folks at ViacomCBS to you.
"Strange New Worlds" debuted last year, with a second season on the way in June (you can watch the trailer here). That's very likely why the first season has been uploaded for free, as a means to help generate further interest in its return. The series is based on the years that Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.

This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 1.
"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," set only a few years prior to the events of the original "Star Trek" series, has gained a lot of traction among its many admirers with a deliberate "retro" approach. Not only does it bank on recognizable "old school" Trek characters -- Captain Pike, Spock, Dr. M'Benga, Number One, Uhura, and Nurse Chapel previously appeared throughout the franchise -- but its aesthetic and setup are decidedly different from the other live-action Trek shows it sits next to on Paramount+. "Strange New Worlds" is an episodic show, eschewing the season-long arcs of most modern Trek. It's also brightly lit and widely filmed, allowing viewers to get a good view of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The first seasons of "Star Trek" shows are notoriously rocky, with some fans warning their friends to just "start with season 2" in the more extreme cases (looking at you, "Star Trek: The Next Generation"). "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," on the other hand, had a totally knockout premiere run. Even my favorite "Star Trek" series, "Deep Space Nine," struggled with a hit-or-miss first season that floundered on occasion, but every single episode of "Strange New Worlds" is a bonafide banger (you can read our review here!). Sure, they only have 10 episodes as compared to the serialized network shows, which had 26, but batting 100 is still no small feat.

“Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” are among the recent honorees of the Ruderman Family Foundation’s Seal of Authentic Representation, Variety has learned exclusively.
The Foundation recognizes films and television series that include authentic representation of people with disabilities. Vanessa Burghardt, an actor with autism, plays Domino’s (Dakota Johnson) autistic daughter Lola in the comedy-drama film “Cha Cha Real Smooth.”
“From the moment the film’s creator, Cooper Raiff, saw Vanessa’s audition, he knew instantly that she was our Lola. No one could deny her talent but authenticity was important to everyone, so Cooper changed the script to age up the character and that was the end of it. Looking back, I cannot imagine another person playing Lola,” said producer Jessica Switch in a statement. “Vanessa was perfect. She was extremely professional and sweet on set. She nailed every take and always came prepared.

Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Consider yourself warned. The first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wrapped up earlier this summer, and as someone who was hungry for episodic Star Trek once again… I loved it. The second season is already in the can and will debut next year, but the production has been keeping a big secret all this time. It was announced during today’s Star Trek Day presentation that Carol Kane will be beaming up for the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Carol Kane is best known for her roles in Dog Day Afternoon, When a Stranger Calls, The Princess Bride, Taxi, and much more. She also received an Academy Award nomination for her role in Hester Street. Carol Kane will be playing Pelia in the Star Trek series, a “highly educated and intelligent” engineer who “suffers no fools.” She solves problems “calmy and brusquely,...

“Strange New Worlds” is based on the years Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) led the U.S.S. Enterprise. The series features fan favorites from Season 2 of “Star Trek: Discovery” including Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. Jesse Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Bruce Horak also star in the series. The show is a prequel to “The Original Series,” set in the time before Capt. Kirk commands the Enterprise.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 9 “All Those Who Wander.”] Star Trek: Strange New Worlds delivered a heartbreaking penultimate episode for its first season, one that saw the Enterprise crew face a deadly alien threat (the Gorn) and lose several of their own. “All Those Who Wander” ended with the crew holding a memorial service for those they lost, including Chief Engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak), which ended up being too much for Spock (Ethan Peck), as he struggled to control his rage and pain. That makes him human, Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) told him, and after their hug, it certainly looked like they could kiss. Here, Bush discusses the latest episode, Chapel and Spock’s complicated dynamic, and what’s ahead for her in Season 2. This episode was really, really good and heartbreaking and also had this mini ...

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
Captain Pike’s USS Enterprise never had a consistent chief engineer. While Scotty lovingly took care of the engines of the Enterprise during Captain Kirk’s five-year mission (and for at least two decades after that), Pike had a hard time keeping someone down there with the dilithium crystals consistently. And, in the newest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, that odd tradition continues with a heartbreaking death nobody saw coming.
Although Strange New Worlds seemed to establish a new fan-favorite chief engineer in the form of Hemmer (Bruce Horak), the ending of “All Those Who Wander” tragically finds Hemmer sacrificing himself to save the crew. After getting infected with Gorn eggs, Hemmer jumps off an ice cliff, presumably to freeze out the Gorn, and probably, never to return. It’s an unexpected gut punch from Strange New Worlds and...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 9 “All Those Who Wander.”] The penultimate episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 has everything that makes this show so good and so entertaining each week: emotional moments, jump scares with an Alien vibe as the Enterprise crew faces the Gorn, and a heartbreaking death. The crew leaves the Enterprise to investigate after another ship activated a distress beacon before losing contact. After encountering the bloody remains of some of the crew, they soon realize they’re dealing with the Gorn — La’an (Christina Chong) was the sole survivor of an attack when she was young — and while they do kill them, they suffer some losses as well: an ensign just promoted to lieutenant, a cadet who finished her training rotation, and Chief Engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak). Here, Horak opens up about saying goodbye to Hemmer. When did you know Hemmer would...

Bruce Horak was not taken by surprise. He knew how it was going to end for Lt. Hemmer.
The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actor was informed shortly after being cast as the Enterprise’s chief engineer for the first season of the Paramount+ series how his character’s arc would conclude. And when it finally came, Horak found great beauty in the moment, even though it signaled his time on the series as a regular had come to an end.
In “All Those Who Wander,” the penultimate season one episode, Hemmer — unknowingly at the time — sacrifices himself to save Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) when a Gorn attacks, spitting venom that hits him instead of her. Initially believed to blind or burn would-be victims, it is later discovered the vemon turns the...

“It feels like going home for me as a Trekkie because I love the original series,” declares composer Nami Melumad about composing for the latest iteration in the “Star Trek” canon, which warp-speeds viewers back in time to the origins of the celebrated franchise. For our recent webchat she adds, “I love the colors of it and the aesthetics of it and the sound of it, and then the look of it and the music of it. So, it was really nice, for me, as a composer to allow myself to get closer to that original sound and to that original tone.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 2
In almost every way, “Children of the Comet,” proves that Strange New Worlds wasn’t kidding around about doing an episodic, self-contained, story-of-the-week old-style Star Trek format. Although the episode continues the emotional arcs of Pike, Spock, and Uhura — as well as introducing Hemmer and taking Sam Kirk on an away mission — the basic story itself is all wrapped up by the end. It’s a classic Trek tale of miscommunication and finds our Starfleet crew challenging their preconceived notions about faith and the basic nature of how aliens would try to talk to us.
It’s also an episode steeped in Trek lore, easter eggs, and callbacks. If you look close enough, everything from Captain Kirk’s favorite booze to something Picard was trying to steal back is referenced in this one. Here’s...

Episode 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" properly introduced the Enterprise's chief engineer, Hemmer (Bruce Horak). Hemmer is a member of a familiar "Star Trek" species, but not quite the one you may think. Specifically, he's an Aenar (pronounced i-nar), a subspecies of the Andorians. The pale white Aenar resemble their blue-skinned cousins, but there are some differences that go more than skin-deep. The Aenar are blind and have telepathic abilities which Andorians lack.
While not as famous as the Vulcans or Klingons, the Andorians go back to "Star Trek: The Original Series." The Aenar are a more recent introduction to the franchise,...

When a franchise has been around as long as Star Trek, it’s not hard to understand a desire to reinvent the wheel — or, I suppose, the warp core. Lean too much on what Trek has been doing since the Sixties and you risk your futuristic space opera feeling old, stodgy, and high on its own supply. But the more recent series like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard have tried much too hard to fit Trek into the Peak TV landscape, in the process losing sight of what...

“Out there… thattaway!”
Kirk’s final line of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” sums up what most people think of “Star Trek.” That it’s about exploration, seeking out new life and new civilizations. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” the latest entry in Paramount+’s burgeoning constellation of series based on Gene Roddenberry’s beloved franchise, would seem to be a part of that. It’s right there in the title! But thankfully, it’s more than that too.
“Star Trek” has always exceeded what other sci-fi franchises are willing to do whenever it looks inward. When it uses the events of the 23rd and 24th centuries to comment on what’s happening in our own time. And one unassailably great thing about “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard” is that, hit or miss as those shows are, they don’t shy away from confronting hard truths and even getting political.

“Star Trek” is returning home to the U.S.S. Enterprise.
In the first trailer for “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” the fifth “Trek” series set at Paramount Plus, Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is seen living in a remote winter cabin (presumably) on Earth. As fans of Mount’s tenure on Season 2 of “Star Trek: Discovery” know, Pike knows about the horrific future that awaits him, in which he’s injured so terribly that he’s trapped inside an immovable body (as depicted in the original series “Star Trek” two-part episode “The Menagerie”). Something, or someone, lures Pike back into service on the Enterprise, returning him to his crew and to the Federation’s mission of exploring the galaxy.
The rest of the trailer provides several glimpses of the vast locales that await Pike, and audiences, in the show’s first, 10-episode season — which will return “Trek” to its...
