Austin Jewish Film Festival director David Finkel was hosting a visiting Israeli student in his home when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel and murdered more than 1,300 people on Oct. 7. The student learned the next day that his grandfather had been killed, and his grandmother and uncle were kidnapped. It’s just one of the many personal connections that people associated with the festival, now in its 21st year, have to the horrors of that day, and to the ongoing fighting in Gaza.
There’s a cliche for times like these: “The show must go on.” But what about now? And what Finkel and the other festival organizers ultimately decided was: especially now.
“One of the conversations was: Is it appropriate for us to go ahead?” Finkel recalls. “And the prevailing feeling was that you don’t want to let the terrorists win, essentially. You want to continue living your life — which...

You can't watch a frame of Jason Hall's Thank You for Your Service, about Iraq war veterans suffering from Pstd, without believing the film's intentions are honorable. Points for that, for sure. Yet as filmmaking – this is Hall's feature directing debut – Thank You for Service seems too timid by half, crucially lacking in the outrage that should be its core value. Hall's screenplay – he also wrote the far more effective American Sniper for director Clint Eastwood – is based on David Finkel's 2013 nonfiction book. But the film has a...

For every The Best Years of Our Lives, there are dozens of Act of Valors. Despite fairly few war films concerning the aftermath and coming home, Ptsd has inflicted millions of soldiers and, most recently, cases pertaining to veterans of Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq have made headlines and become more topical, stripping away taboos.
Jason Hall’s Thank You for Your Service, which depicts the emotional trauma of several Iraq War veterans upon returning home, means well and its message — we need to better take care of our own — is felt loud and clear. Based on the popular and acclaimed book by David Finkel, which featured soldiers struggling to readjust to family and civilian life, it doesn’t flinch when it comes time to depict a soldier at their lowest state post-war. The deep psychological black hole some of these heroes must endure upon return has given way to a...

Films about modern warfare tend to face an uphill battle. Current conflicts are hardly box office gold, so to find an audience, you need to have a very specific appeal. In the case of Thank You For Your Service, filmmaker Jason Hall finds an entry point with the mental battle being fought by the troops. Opening tomorrow (or tonight, depending on when you read this), the film will tug at your heart, potentially bring you to tears, and leave you invested in the plight of our wounded warriors. It’s one of the better films of 2017 so far and deserves to find a wide audience. Having seen it twice already, it will challenge you in all the right ways. This movie is an adaptation of the David Finkel book of the same name. Focusing mainly on a pair of soldiers as they return home from Iraq and adjust to civilian life,...

War-themed films don't have to concentrate on combat to be harrowing. Case in point: Jason Hall's affecting drama depicting the emotional turmoil suffered by several Iraq War veterans upon their return home. Based on David Finkel's acclaimed 2013 nonfiction book, Thank You for Your Service sheds a spotlight on the Ptsd that afflicts so many veterans of America's longest war. Considering that there seems to be no end in sight of the country's involvement in the Middle East, the film proves timely and affecting.

“Thank You for Your Service” begins on an Iraqi rooftop, where a young American soldier named Michael Adam Emory (Scott Haze) is shot in the head by a distant sniper. But the key moment of the sequence doesn’t come until a few seconds later, as Sergeant Adam Schumann (Miles Teller) slings his severely wounded comrade over his shoulder and races him down a sandy flight of stairs. It would be hard — almost superhuman — for Schumann to negotiate the descent even without Emory’s blood streaming into his eyes and the foundation quaking from the firefight outside. So he drops him. Not on purpose, of course, but there are some weights that men aren’t meant to carry. And when Schumann returns to his wife and kids in Kansas, it’s Emory who haunts him the most — not the guys who died, but the guy he dropped.

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Jason Hall adapted David Finkel’s book Thank You For Your Service, about the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder syndrome that is becoming a major issue for vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The film version of Thank You For Your Service starring Haley Bennett, Miles Teller and newcomer Beulah Koale, opens this Friday, with Hall behind the camera as director as well as screenwriter. Hall’s next project is The Virginian, about the young George Washington. Hall’s ambition is to show Washington as a rough man driven by extreme ambition in a violent frontier, and the film will show how one man’s battle to conquer himself enabled him to liberate a nation.

Fall is the season of Real-People movies — the biopics that often fuel Oscar hopes. Recent weeks brought “The Battle of the Sexes,” “Stronger,” and “Victoria & Abdul” and there’s more than a dozen to come, including “Marshall,” “The Post,” “Darkest Hour,” and “The Current War.” There’s good reason to believe that a biopic might produce awards. In the last five years, 28 of the 100 Oscar acting nominees played real-life characters, as did four of the 20 winners. But when it comes to the box office, the odds aren’t as kind.

DreamWorks Pictures has released a first look at their upcoming film Thank You For Your Service.
The drama follows a group of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life, while living with the memory of a war that threatens to destroy them long after they’ve left the battlefield.
Starring an ensemble cast led by Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Joe Cole, Amy Schumer, Beulah Koale, Scott Haze, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Brad Beyer, Omar J. Dorsey and Jayson Warner Smith, the drama is based on the bestselling book by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author David Finkel.
Jason Hall, who wrote the screenplay of American Sniper, makes his directorial debut with Thank You For Your Service and also serves as its screenwriter.
Book synopsis:
No journalist has reckoned with the psychology of war as intimately as David Finkel. In The Good Soldiers, his bestselling account from the front lines of Baghdad, Finkel embedded with the men of the 2-16 Infantry Battalion as they carried out the infamous “surge,” a grueling fifteen-month tour that changed them all forever.
In Thank You for Your Service, Finkel follows many of those same men as they return home and struggle to reintegrate―both into their family lives and into American society at large. He is with them in their most intimate, painful, and hopeful moments as they try to recover, and in doing so, he creates an indelible, essential portrait of what life after war is like―not just for these soldiers, but for their wives, widows, children, and friends, and for the professionals who are truly trying, and to a great degree failing, to undo the damage that has been done. Thank You for Your Service is an act of understanding, and it offers a more complete picture than we have ever had of two essential questions: When we ask young men and women to go to war, what are we asking of them? And when they return, what are we thanking them for?
Jon Kilik (The Hunger Games series, Babel) produces the film, while Ann Ruark (Biutiful) executive produces.
Universal Pictures will release the film October 27.

Initially expected to contend for Oscar attention last year, Thank You For Your Service is now gearing up to make a 2017 run. The film is a much more intimate take on the war genre, offering up a Miles Teller showcase in the process. Yesterday, a Trailer dropped for the flick, suggesting that the delay had nothing to do with quality. You’ll be able to see it at the end of this article, as per the usual around here, but first…some discussion is in order. I’ve been including Thank You For Your Service here and there in predictions for some time now. Was I nuts? Read on to find out. The project is a drama centered on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (or Ptsd) and the cost of war. Here, we follow Adam Schumann (Teller), a soldier coming home to his wife Saskia Schumann (Haley Bennett) and child after serving bravely in the Middle East. While initially he is happy to be home and spending time with his beautiful wife, Ptsd quickly rears its ugly head. Reluctant to discuss what went on over there, he struggles to deal with the price of war and what he’s brought home with him. Jason Hall adapts the book by David Finkel and directs here. The cast here includes the likes of Hunter Burke, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Joe Cole, Omar J. Dorsey, Scott Haze, Amy Schumer, Kate Lyn Sheil, and many more. Thomas Newman contributes the score, while the cinematography is from Roman Vasyanov. This initial Trailer suggests a potentially devastating film. The devil will be in the details, but the skeleton is there for sure. Teller seems to be giving a strong performance, which could be what anchors things and puts it into awards contention (though more on that later). If Hall can prove a solid director and turn in a script slightly more well developed than his acclaimed one for American Sniper, there’s real potential. A lot remains to be seen, but just as a first Trailer, this is good stuff. If it lives up to the potential, it could be an emotional and important movie that plays to all sorts of audiences. Oscar wise, Thank You For Your Service seems potentially right up their alley. If things shake out right, look for an across the board campaign, including plays in Best Picture, Best Director (for Hall), Best Actor (for Teller), Best Supporting Actress (for Bennett), Best [...]...

American Sniper scribe Jason Hall wrote the film and will make his directorial debut with the project. Schumer’s role hasn’t been revealed at this point but it’s interesting to note she will be joining Whiplash’s Miles Teller in the movie.
Based on the book of the same name by David Finkel, the film follows a group of soldiers returning home from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into civilian life, with Teller leading a cast that includes Haley Bennet, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Joe Cole, Beulah Koale, Scott Haze, Brad Beyer, Omar Dorsey, and Jayson Warner Smith.
Schumer is certainly keeping busy these days with her next starring role in a mother-daughter comedy she co-wrote which has Warm Bodies helmer Jonathan Levine directing.

As he dusts himself off after the belly flop of the new Fantastic Four and looks instead to the future, Miles Teller is finding no shortage of work. He’s now in early negotiations to star in American Sniper writer Jason Hall’s directorial debut, Thank You For Your Service. The writer adapted the script from David Finkel’s nonfiction 2014 tome, which followed what happened to American veterans home from Iraq and their struggles to adapt to civilian life after their experiences in combat. And the script focuses on three specific soldiers who must deal with what they saw overseas and how that affects their re-integration into family life and the workplace. From the sounds of it, Teller is up for the role of one of the troopers, and it sounds like something he could bring some intensity to. There’s no word on when the film might start production.
