After various bumps in the road, Dancing With the Stars Season 32 finally hit the air on Tuesday night.
What was once a perfectly satisfactory competition series has desperately struggled to recapture its former glory.
The biggest flaw in Dancing With the Stars Season 32 Episode 1 out of the gate is ABC's decision to eliminate a competitor during the season premiere.
We get it: You want the series to have stakes and highlight that anyone could be eliminated anytime.
But as a viewer, watching the arcs of the competitors is one of the best parts of the show.
Knowing what they've gone through and how they approach criticism delivers compelling stories that allow us to root for the people we like.
Unfortunately, by the end of the premiere, Matt Walsh's time on the reality TV hit was already over.

The first week of competition can always be a challenge for the couples to find their footing — but, as usual, some celebs shined bright as standout talents, while others stumbled hard.
After two hours of debut dances, it was up to America to vote on who deserved to perform once more next week, and whose time was already up.
In the end — through a combination of judges scores and audience votes — two couples were determined to be in jeopardy: Mauricio Umansky and Emma Slater, as well as Matt Walsh and Koko Iwasaki.

One look at Kokomo City and you’d think it’s an ode to film noir. The black and white poster
shows Dominique Silver, a transgender sex worker from New York City, lying on a bed with
dim light peering through the shutters as smoke rises nonchalantly from her cigarette,
billowing toward the film’s title in yellow neon lettering. It’s a striking aesthetic and director D. Smith uses it throughout the documentary, presenting her subjects — Dominique, Liyah,
Daniella, Koko — in inky grayscale.
Kokomo City’s noirish qualities run deeper than its stylish presentation, though. It is a
documentary about urban life in which sex and violence exist in dangerously close proximity. Liyah, an Atlanta sex worker, distils this reality with an outrageous anecdote in Kokomo’s opening, which involves a client, a gun, a fight, and a professional rekindling before cutting to a montage with ‘Street Life’ by...

Filmmaker D. Smith’s debut documentary “Kokomo City” presents a raw depiction of the lives of four Black trans women — Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell and Dominique Silver. Based in Atlanta and New York City, the women get real about sex work and confront the prejudices they experience, as well as the persistent threat of violence they face each day.
“Kokomo City” made a huge splash at Sundance, winning both the Next Audience and Innovator awards, landing Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad as executive producers and securing theatrical distribution from Magnolia Pictures. Following the big wins, the documentary continued along the festival circuit, screening for massive crowds at Berlin, SXSW and BFI’s London Lgbtqia+ film fest, among other international venues.

Utah-based Angel Studios has Hollywood scratching its head with its crowdfunding ticket model for “Sound of Freedom”: Its Pay It Forward program allows audiences to purchase tickets for others who don’t have the mean to buy one themselves.
Now, D. Smith’s Sundance-winning documentary “Kokomo City” is adopting a similar strategy. And while this is a very different kind of film than “Sound of Freedom,” the ticket-buying option is clearly inspiring similarly innovative models. “Kokomo City” distributor Magnolia Pictures has set up a website encouraging viewers to “Support the Girls,” meaning for the next two weeks you can contribute a ticket for someone else to see the moving and hilarious documentary about Black trans sex workers at IFC Center in New York City.
The film will head nationwide in a wider release beginning August 4 — dates and locations are here — but for now, IFC Center in New York is the documentary’s exclusive home.

The Animated World is a regular feature spotlighting animation from around the globe.Joy Street. When T.S. Eliot famously asked “Do I dare to eat a peach?” in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, he was alluding to social and bodily anxiety, and the sticky traps that can ensnare the unsuspecting. Eliot’s J. Alfred finds a reason to be anxious about even the most mundane objects or situations—though eating in public (especially syrupy fruits) is a common anxiety. And while a peach should be an innocuous, enjoyable object, in practice a ripe peach can spontaneously turn an ordinary person into a spectacle. Or so Eliot and others assume. Anxiety is a powerful and nebulous force that affects most people some of the time, and some people all of the time, and whether or not it is generated by body issues, it is always felt in the body.

If you've ever wondered, how do they restore old films? What is the process, and how long does it take, and how delicate is it? Then this is a must watch video. Adam Savage's Tested YouTube channel released this nerdy video in December last year, but we've just caught up with it now. How a 100-Year-Old Animated Film Is Restored is a short minute short doc taking a trip to the restoration house known as Blackhawk Films, based in Burbank, CA. The 20 minute video follows the team as they received an old 35mm print of a classic Koko the Clown cartoon from 1924, cleaning up the reel and feeding it into a scanning device. They use a 10K Lasergraphics scanner, then work on cleaning up the rest of the dust and dirt and everything else digitally in computers. I'd love to learn more about the laser scanning machine, and more...

Kokomo City is not a real place. It’s more like a state of mind, invented by director D. Smith, who is Black and trans, to describe the space that her sisters occupy in the world. Theirs is an identity that is barely understood by the public and frequently misrepresented by the media, but is here defined by a handful of tell-it-like-it-is trans sex workers who offer snappy, whip-smart insights into their lives, dreams and the down-low dudes who adore them. In Smith’s short, salty micro-budget doc, the t-girls spill the tea, totally reframing the conversation.
A singer-songwriter who produced for the likes of Lil Wayne and Katy Perry, only to see her livelihood dry up when she transitioned, Smith still thinks in terms of music. During the course of shooting this film, the self-taught director stumbled across a nearly 90-year-old recording called “Sissy Man Blues” from all-but-forgotten Black crooner Kokomo Arnold.

Guardian Australia’s film critic, Luke Buckmaster, sits down for the interview of his career with Phoenix, the star of Red Dog: True Blue, and a very good boy.
In the original film, the producer’s own dog, Koko, starred as Red Dog, an urban legend of a kelpie who spent much of his life without a master, wandering through mining communities in Western Australia in the 1970s.

The footpath outside the Orana Cinema in Busselton, Western Australia, is inscribed with names of Australian cinematic royalty: Jack Thompson. Hugo Weaving. David Wenham. Steve Bisley. Bryan Brown. Koko, the dog from Red Dog.
It is somewhat striking that of the nine names that have been featured on CinefestOz’s walk of fame, kelpies are better represented than women – but this year’s festival brought with it a new addition: the acclaimed director Gillian Armstrong.

Box office hit Red Dog is to get a North American, multi-platform release, which will include DVD sales through the world’s biggest retailer.
Following theatrical distribution in other territories, Us-based Arc Entertainment has acquired the film to distribute it theatrically, and on VOD and DVD, which will include being on sale in Walmart stores.
Nelson Woss, Red Dog’s producer, told Encore: “There’s an unique deal with Arc in which one of the elements of the deal will see the film promoted as one of Walmart’s DVDs of the month.”
The deal follows the film’s success locally on DVD. In Australia, the film is the biggest selling local release on DVD and third overall behind Avatar and Finding Nemo, selling units in the high six figures, Woss said.
Theatrically, the film will be in limited release, but take a similar marketing strategy to the film’s release here.

In this month’s issue of Encore Magazine, we asked: ‘Is Australia getting better at marketing our films?’ to Kathleen Drumm, head of marketing for funding body Screen Australia, and Andrew Traucki, writer, producer, and director of films The Reef and Blackwater.
For: Kathleen Drumm, head of marketing for funding body Screen Australia
There’s no doubt marketing local films is challenging. Every week, in almost every major western market, a cluster of big-budget studio films dominate the box office. Big films with big marketing budgets which take advantage of multi-million dollar campaigns coming out of Hollywood. Australian films have to compete in this environment, vying for screens and sessions, as well as media attention. Distributors and producers are required to work creatively, often with limited budgets, to generate excitement for their films – and there’s a lot of evidence to suggest they’re doing a great job.

The canine star of The Artist has seen off competition from Martin Scorsese's Hugo dog to win the top prize at the Golden Collar Awards.
The Goodfellas director campaigned to have Blackie the Doberman included in the nominations for Best Dog In A Theatrical Film at the annual prizegiving, which recognises the most talented animals in Hollywood.
However, even Scorsese couldn't secure his dog the top prize at the ceremony on Monday night as The Artist star Uggie took the coveted honour.
Other winners included Koko, the star of Australian movie Red Dog, who scooped the Best Dog in a Foreign Film prize, and Brigitte from Modern Family, who won the trophy for Best Dog in a Television Series.

In case you were wondering, Uggie is not the only canine in town. Red Dog's Koko could be the next pup to get the big trailer and giant T-bone treatment. Red Dog captures the wild, blokey days of the 1970s Dampier. Shot on location in isolated Wa’s Pilbara Region, the producers employed a low-budget mentality and called in favours to make finances go the distance. Joanne Whitehead reports.
Set in Western Australia in the remote town of Dampier, Red Dog is based upon a legend about a local stray dog, that residents claim was responsible for creating a sense of community in the 1970s, when the coastal town was barely established. A sentimental comedy that finds laughs from not just the dog but the inner workings of the male dominated mining community, it’s adapted from Louis de Bernieres’ (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) novelisation of the story.

The nothing-is-sacred humour of the Australian bush comes naturally to this London Australian film festival opener
Being from Perth, I've heard stories about the legend of Red Dog since my youth. A stray Kelpie cross who wound up in the newly established mining town of Dampier, western Australia, sometime in the early 70s, he became such a friend to the locals that a statue of him now greets all visitors to Dampier.
It was a sighting of this statue, the town's sole monument, that led Louis de Bernières to turn his tale into a book, an adaptation of which kicked off this year's London Australian film festival at the Barbican – I saw a screening introduced by Nelson Woss (the producer, and proud owner of leading dog, Koko).
How much of the resulting movie is embellishment is up for debate. But in the tradition of films such as semi-fictionalised The Castle,...
