CBS Sports sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson is 5-foot-2. Center Zach Edey of Purdue is 7-foot-4. That presents an interviewing problem.
Wolfson learned a lesson after being cut out of the picture while interviewing Edey in the early post game of the Final Four, and conducted her later postgame interviews while perched on a ladder.
“That is right, Ian [Eagle], you said I needed a ladder, I got myself a ladder,” Wolfson said after to her colleague.
Earlier, Wolfson spoke with Edey on the court, where the height difference made things awkward.
As the camera zoomed in on Edey, only Wolfson’s mic was in the frame.
“Tracy, we just ordered you a ladder,” analyst Ian Eagle quipped.

Updated with Thompson apology: Fox Sports’ NFL Kickoff host Charissa Thompson is apologizing following an outcry of criticism from her peers after admitting that she “would make up” sideline reports at games. In an Instagram story, Charissa said she wanted to “address the elephant in the room.”
“Working in media I understand how important words are and I chose the wrong words to describe the situation,” she said, adding “I’m sorry. I have never lied about anything or been unethical during my time as a sports broadcaster.”
She clarified that “in the absence of a coach providing any information,” she would use information she had gathered and saw during the first half to create her report. “For example if a team was 0 for 7 on 3rd down, that would clearly be an area they needed to improve on in the second half. Charissa Thompson is responding to the controversy sparked by her appearance on a podcast this week.
In an Instagram story, Thompson said she needed to “address the elephant in the room” and that she has “a responsibility to myself and my employers to clarify what is being reported.”
Thompson’s comments on the Pardon My Take podcast went viral, and sparked backlash from other sports journalists.
“I’ve said this before, so I haven’t been fired for saying it, but I’ll say it again. I would make up the report sometimes,” Thompson said on the podcast, adding that on occasion “the coach wouldn’t come out at halftime, or it was too late and … I didn’t want to screw up the report, so I was like, ‘I’m just going to make this up.’”

Winners were announced in 46 categories by the National Academy of TV Arts and Sciences in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday night, including Outstanding Live Sports Special, Live Sports Series and Playoff Coverage, three Documentary categories, Outstanding Play-by-Play Announcer, Studio Host, and Emerging On-Air Talent, among others.

You’d think Lisa Salters would have seen everything by now, but the woman who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving sideline reporter in the history of “Monday Night Football” will soon encounter something that has never been part of covering an NFL game.
When ESPN launches this season of “Mnf,” Salters will likely find herself working the game from empty stadium seats, in an area now being referred to as “the moat.” Other reporters who have her role, like CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson and NBC Sports’ Michele Tafoya, are in a similar position: reporting from a game’s sidelines when that area will be off-limits due to restrictions posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s going to challenge me to think outside the box, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” says Salters, getting ready for her ninth season with the football broadcast. “I have to find a...

Tony Romo has connected on yet another big score. After weeks of speculation on whether a move to ESPN would happen, Romo is now set to remain with CBS Sports for the 2020 NFL season and beyond in a reported $17 million per year deal.

CBS Sports signed prize football analyst Tony Romo to a new deal, a major step in parent company ViacomCBS’ efforts to strike a new rights pact with the National Football League as its current contract heads toward the end of its term.
CBS Sports said the company had signed Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback whose acumen for predicting game play has given him a second celebrated career in sports TV, to a new multi-year deal. The New York Post previously broke word of the agreement via Twitter.
Romo’s new deal, said to keep him at CBS beyond its current rights contract with the NFL, is valued at around $17 million per year, according to a person familiar with the matter. At that figure, Romo would be one of the highest-paid on-air personnel in sports media. CBS Sports declined to make executives available for comment.

On behalf of Patriots fans everywhere, I apologize for the Super Bowl. We know it was a terrible game. We also know you hate us. Hell, I hate us.
Even we don’t enjoy this that much anymore. My personal excitement level Sunday night was between enjoying a good cheeseburger and waking up to find a boil gone.
Aesthetically there have definitely been worse Super Bowls. The 1995 Niners-Chargers game was over in five minutes. The Eighties and early Nineties were filled with games like that, blowouts decided before your second beer.

While that smooch from Papa John may have had sponsorship roots, Peyton Manning's post-Super Bowl win Budweiser nod was totally unplanned. After nabbing his second Super Bowl ring, Manning told CBS' Tracy Wolfson that he planned to "drink a lot of Budweiser tonight, Tracy, I promise you that." The name drop wasn't a paid promotion for the 39-year-old Denver Broncos quarterback, according to Budweiser. "We didn't know the shout out was coming either, but we're glad it did," the beverage company tweeted after Manning's interview. We didn’t know the shout out was coming either, but we’re glad it did.

Peyton Manning has big post-game plans following his second Super Bowl win. "I want to go kiss my wife and my kids. I want to go hug my family," the Denver Broncos quarterback told CBS' Tracy Wolfson Sunday night after he helped lead his team to victory in Super Bowl 50. "I'm going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight, Tracy, I promise you that," he added. "I'm going to take care of those things first and definitely going to say a little prayer and thank the man upstairs for this great opportunity." The 2016 Super Bowl could be the 39-year-old NFL star's last.
