Sofia Coppola's true-crime drama The Bling Ring, which stars Emma Watson as one of a gang of fame-obsessed teenagers who robbed celebrities' Hollywood Hills homes, is released in the UK this Friday.
Digital Spy sat down with Coppola to discuss how she approached the stranger-than-fiction story and her decision to cast Watson against type as the shallow, self-deluded Nicki.
The group are played by Watson, Katie Chang, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard and Claire Julien, while Georgia Rock and Leslie Mann play Watson's sister and mother respectively.
The real 'Bling Ring' stole over $3 million of property from celebrities including Orlando Bloom, Paris Hilton, Rachel Bilson and Lindsay Lohan.
The film debuted in May at the Cannes Film Festival.

New Bling Ring movie delivered great drama and an awesome Emma Watson. A24 Studio released their new drama flick "The Bling Ring" into theaters, nationwide, this weekend. I just checked it out,and thought it was pretty damn good, serving up crazy drama as it outlined the true story of a bunch of teens that decided to rob the houses of very famous people in Hollywood. It stars: Emma Watson, Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Claire Julien, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Georgia Rock, and Gavin Rossdale. In the new flick, character Rebecca befriended Marc. Later on, as their friendship progressed, Rebecca started introducing to Mark, new ways to steal from people, starting off by checking for people who leave their cars unlocked, and stealing cash and other valuables. Then it eventually escalated into hitting up houses. From there, of course, they moved on to celebrity houses, starting with Paris Hilton. After they hit that one up,...

While I had only seen one of her movies before seeing “The Bling Ring,” I was aware that Sofia Coppola has become a respected film director. Although she may have had some nepotistic advantages, I would conjecture they were outweighed, if not rendered moot, by following the career path of her father , a filmmaker whom many regard as the greatest of all time. She deserves credit for making a name for herself.
Unfortunately for Ms. Coppola, I am old enough to remember her first credited foray in movies, as an actress. She replaced Winona Ryder in her father’s unnecessary “The Godfather: Part III.” I’ve never thought of Winona Ryder as a particularly talented actress, and unfortunately for Ms. Coppola, she was no Winona Ryder.
She had no acting training and only a week’s notice before she was to being filming. Her performance was...

Chicago – We live a celebrity-driven culture that not only easily dismisses when its celebutantes get DUIs but practically sees the occasion as a rite of passage. We follow gossip websites to the degree that we know the schedules of people who are famous just for being famous better than we know our family’s. And these celebrities are feted with gifts to the degree that they wouldn’t notice if most of their possessions went missing. Sofia Coppola’s incredibly entertaining “The Bling Ring” dares to subtly make the case that the kids who very casually decided to begin robbing TMZ’s most-beloved in the Hollywood Hills grew from this modern world of misplaced priorities. Her film walks that fine line where some will criticize it for excusing their behavior while others will think it mocks them too openly. Both miss the point. The brilliance of “The Bling Ring” is...

After delving into the vacuous lifestyle of a celebrity in “Somewhere,” Sofia Coppola tackles celebrity anew in “The Bling Ring,” this time from the viewpoint of the teens who idolize them so much that they want to be them. Based on the Vanity Fair article “The Suspects Wore Louboutins,“ her new film stars Emma Watson (sporting an impeccable Valley accent and skimpy outfits that would make Harry Potter blush), Taissa Farmiga and a string of newcomers as a group of Southern California high schoolers who infamously stole close to $2 million worth of goodies from the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox. Coppola’s film opens with the crew each recounting the series of events after being found out by the cops.
I called up the soft-spoken Coppola to discuss what attracted her to the story, how her and Hilton (who’s house is featured in the film) are getting on,...

Title: The Bling Ring Directed By: Sofia Coppola Starring: Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Georgia Rock, Leslie Mann, Gavin Rossdale “The Bling Ring” isn’t as slick as “Spring Breakers,” but it benefits from a boost in credibility courtesy of its outrageous factual source material. Being the new kid at school isn’t much fun for Marc (Israel Broussard) until he crosses paths with Rebecca (Katie Chang). She immediately takes him under her wing, introducing him to her friends, bringing him to parties, and giving him something he’s always craved, a true best friend, so when Rebecca suggests they sneak into Paris Hilton’s house while she’s away, Marc follows [ Read More ]

The last time Academy Award-winner Sofia Coppola hit up La Croisette to unveil a new work, 2006's "Marie Antoinette," the Hollywood royal child was met with boos. History didn't repeat itself when "The Bling Ring" kicked off the Cannes' Un Certain Regard section this morning after screening to a packed house of press. No surprise really, given that it takes a pretty straightforward approach to telling its true story of teens gone wild. Not being about one of France's most divisive historical figures also no doubt helped. Based on the Vanity Fair article "The Suspects Wore Louboutins," "The Bling Ring" stars Emma Watson (sporting an impeccable Valleyese accent and outfitted skimpy clothing that would make her Harry Potter blush), Taissa Farmiga and a string of newcomers including Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Julien and Georgia Rock, as a group of Southern California high schoolers who infamously stole close to a...

Emma Watson has discussed her role in the movie The Bling Ring.
The actress plays Nicki, a pole-dancing, thieving 'Valley Vixen' involved in a circle that steals from famous people.
She said to GQ: "When I read the script and I realised that essentially it was a meditation on fame and what it's become to our society, I had to do it.
"The character is everything that I felt strongly against - she's superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral. She's all of these things and I realised that I hated her. How do you play someone you hate?
"But I found it really interesting and it gave me a whole new insight into what my job, or my role as an actress, could be."
The film is directed by Sofia Coppola and involves a circle of teenage girls played by Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister, Georgia Rock and Carlos Miranda.

Though she may have a limited number of films to her credit (only putting things out about every three years), Sofia Coppola is on the very short list of my favorite working directors. Not only is she responsible for one of my favorite films, but I even loved Somewhere, which threw people for a loop, and certainly didn’t resonate with audiences generally. Coming off the heels of that film and Marie Antoinette, which overall performed as bad with audiences and worse among critics, Coppola needs a boost to her status in the collective consciousness.
If a massive surge of hype surrounding a teaser counts for anything, she is apparently well on her way to getting that boost. Of course, the movie is going to have to actually do well, but this looks to have all the elements needed to at least outperform her last two efforts at the box office.

It looks like young people doing very bad things is going to be recurring theme this year. And the folks at A24 are more than happy to bring it you. Later this month, Harmony Korine and his group of young starlets tear up Florida in "Spring Breakers." Then this summer, Emma Watson joins another group of no good kids to steal and rob in "The Bling Ring" but there's one difference -- this is based on actual events. The first teaser for Sofia Coppola's film is here, and it's a stylistic left turn for the filmmaker. Known for her moodier efforts like "The Virgin Suicides," "Lost In Translation" and "Somewhere," this is pumped up by pushed-to-the-red sounds of "Crown On The Ground" by Sleigh Bells, and with a much more energetic, ripped-from-the-headlines vibe and in-the-moment feel (thanks to the surveillance style footage). Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister, Georgia Rock...

Get out your day planner and start making some adjustments. A couple of Sundance movies, a highly anticipated entry from an auteur, and some blockbusters are getting release dates. First up, Sofia Coppola's latest tale of bad girls, "The Bling Ring," is now stealing a June 14th bow as planned. The film stars Emma Watson alongside a group of smaller names-- Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister, Georgia Rock and Carlos Miranda (and Leslie Mann has a role too) -- in the based-on-a-true-story tale of a group of affluent teenagers who pulled off some brazen heists of celebrity homes, taking up to $3 million worth of goods. We'd wager a Cannes premiere (likely out of competition, or maybe in the edgier Un Certain Regard) is a strong possibility. Next up, James Ponsoldt's Sundance Film Festival sensation "The Spectacular Now" will arrive, curiously, at the end of summer on August 2nd.

The Top Ten is here as my countdown of my Top 50 Most Anticipated Movies of 2013 comes to an end. Each day this week I have featured ten new films I'm looking forward to over the coming 12 months. They've ranged from the mindless (Pain and Gain) to the art house (Twelve Years a Slave). The list has included directors such as Paul Greengrass, Jason Reitman, Baz Luhrmann, the Coen brothers, Steve McQueen, Won Kar Wai, Michael Bay, Alexander Payne, Lars von Trier, Kenneth Branagh, George Clooney, Ron Howard, Anton Corbijn, James Gray, Chan-wook Park, Steven Soderbergh, Edgar Wright, Danny Boyle and Susanne Bier. The stars of these films are too many to name and today's final ten is no different. I'm happy to say the talent behind the camera in my top ten is not only gender diverse, but racially diverse and they come from all corners of the globe. Today's...

Going in front of cameras earlier this year, Sofia Coppola's next effort "The Bling Ring" has been flying a bit under the radar. While there have been some official stills, we've mostly had to make out what we can of the movie from the various set photos, but as 2012 winds down and we look ahead to 2013, we will definitely start to see more. Premiere magazine has a couple new snaps of Emma Watson in the film and they are certainly less playful and more sombre than what we've seen before. The actress leads the cast of mostly lesser known talent -- Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister, Georgia Rock and Carlos Miranda (and Leslie Mann has a role too) -- in the based-on-a-true-story tale of a group of affluent teenagers who pulled off some brazen heists of celebrity homes, taking up to $3 million worth of goods. On the heels of yesterday's first look at Emma Watson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2) and gang in Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, Entertainment Weekly has debuted a more fashionable look at the same group. The pic is accompanied by a quote from Watson whose preparation for the role turned to reality television. "I just watched a ton of reality TV," she said. "I was doing an English course [at Brown University]. So I would go from reading Virginia Woolf to [watching] Kim Kardashian. I kind of loved it, this mix of super-high and super-low culture. I think it was a nice balance." You have to absolutely love Watson's comment there equating Kim Kardashian to "super-low culture." Brilliant. Watson and those above represent the real life celebrity burglaring group dubbed The Bling Ring who allegedly burglarized a series of celebrity homes which included alleged targets such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan,...

Back in March we told you that Emma Watson had been cast in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, a film based on the teenage “gang” of delinquents that famously targeted (and rather easily) robbed several celebrity homes, including that of Paris Hilton (whose home reportedly got hit several times), Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox, and Rachel Bilson - in the process of stealing millions of dollars worth cash, clothes, jewelry and such.
A film based on these clowns would be a tough sell for me, but I have to admit that there’s something about Sofia Coppola’s involvement in a film that tends to class up the proceedings even if it doesn’t end up delivering in the end. Coppola didn’t waste much time casting the actress who might be the absolute ideal at the moment for a role asking for a young fashionable lead (who I think...

Following some set photos and an innocuous video sneaking their way online, we’ve finally been granted a first official look at Sofia Coppola‘s The Bling Ring. It is, sadly, not a still from the actual film, but a promotional piece that presents our titular group of teenage criminals; Emma Watson is leading the pack, while the rest of the pictured lineup includes Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister, and Georgia Rock.
The picture doesn’t leave much to discuss, so, if you haven’t heard, it’d be best for you to know that The Bling Ring is based on a real-life group of Hollywood teens who, for reasons eloquently detailed here, decided to break into the homes of celebrities and steal millions of dollars worth of their jewelry; funny enough, then, that Paris Hilton, Gavin Rossdale, and Kirsten Dunst (Coppola‘s Marie Antoinette star) all filmed cameos as themselves.

Emma Watson is easy enough to pick out of the five characters above that make up the titular gang at the center of Sofia Coppola's new movie The Bling Ring, but the others aren't quite so easy. I think the one on the far left is Claire Alys Julien (who also has a small role in The Dark Knight Rises) as Chloe, next to her is Vera Farmiga's sister, Taissa Farmiga, as Sam, then it's Watson as Nicki, Katie Chang as Rebecca and Israel Broussard as Marc making up the gang known as The Bling Ring who burglarizes a series of celebrity homes which included alleged targets such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Audrina Patridge, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox.
