Modern day life may have seen the majority of us packed into cities, on top of each other, paying eye-wateringly expensive prices to live in ticky-tacky boxes but perhaps none to quite the same degree as the man and his dog in Seamus Murphy’s Henry Needs a New Home. A delightfully absurd short which was born of the Australian filmmaker’s own feelings of claustrophobia and disillusionment with overpriced accommodation. The film takes us on an absurdist, yet completely relatable journey through one man’s feelings of despair and eventual total disillusionment towards his life and living situation, ultimately forcing him to face the terrifying abyss of dealing with loss before gathering the determination to make a change and pick himself back up. Alongside pulling on your heartstrings Henry Needs a New Home delights with its considered and playful production design and frenetic montages depicting the chaos faced by our beleaguered protagonist.

Legendary musician Pj Harvey is an art-rock icon in many circles, but the kind of fame that her ’90s peers, Bjork and Tori Amos found, eluded her. Maybe her stature will be set right in the upcoming Pj Harvey-centered documentary “A Dog Called Money,” which finally set for a domestic release. The much-buzzed-about project covers Harvey’s creative process as she produced 2016’s “The Hope Six Demolition Project.” Along with ‘Project’, the singer also paired with photographer Seamus Murphy to create a book of poetry—“The Hollow of the Hand.” What resulted from the joint projects became the film, screened initially at the 2019 Berlinale.

The pandemic, although disastrous for most parts of the economy, had one minor upside: a boost in online viewing. The number of subscribers of Portugal’s VOD platform Filmin, for example, has tripled compared with last year, due in part to the lockdown. “We grew as much in three months as we forecast for two years,” Filmin Portugal manager Anette Dujisin told Variety. Classic films have played a major part in driving that growth.
Despite challenges with local classics, Filmin is seeing growing success with heritage films and catalog titles as well as new releases. Filmin has received constant requests from subscribers – even loud demands from some – for more classic films since the service went online in 2016, Dujisin said.
The feedback affirms “that a VOD platform dedicated to independent cinema is not complete without a certain body of classical films,” Dujisin said. “So since the beginning we have been making...

This documentary about the making of the singer-songwriter’s album The Hope Six Demolition Project provides few insights
Here’s a disappointingly uninsightful documentary about the making of Pj Harvey’s reportage-style 2016 album The Hope Six Demolition Project. It’s directed by Seamus Murphy, a photojournalist and friend of Harvey who she travels with on research field trips to Afghanistan, Kosovo and low-income black neighbourhoods of Washington DC. But the film’s political engagement is oddly wishy-washy, while fans hungry for intimate access to the singer will leave frustrated – Murphy politely respects Harvey’s cool, emotionally reserved public persona.
In Washington, Harvey meets Paunie, a teenage girl who dresses like a boy and commands total respect on the street. (It’s Paunie’s dog that gives the film the title.) In Kosovo, an elderly woman keeps the keys of neighbours who fled the village during the war (and presumably won...

Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts’ documentary scoops both the Grand Prize and the Audience Award, while Papicha, Monos and Camille complete the list of victors. Confirming its deserved place within the tightly packed landscape of film events unspooling in France in the autumn months, and having paid tribute to Bertrand Tavernier and Mike Leigh in their presence during its 7th edition, which closed on 6 October in Châlons-en-Champagne to the tune of over 19,000 viewers, the War on Screen Festival has crowned the British documentary For Sama by Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts its winner; a film which walked away brandishing both the Grand Jury Prize (whose judges were presided over by the photographer and director Seamus Murphy) and the Audience Award. Unveiled (and triumphant) in Austin’s SXSW before being shown in a Special Screening as part of Cannes’ official selection, battling it out for the Best Documentary Golden Eye...

The documentary, written by Stan Grant and directed by Brit Daniel Gordon, looks at race, identity and belonging from the perspective of former Sydney Swans captain and Indigenous rights activist Adam Goodes, who in 2013 sparked a national conversation about racism after requesting a 13-year-old Collingwood supporter be removed from the ground after calling him an “ape”.
“The Australian Dream is a compelling kickstart both to our festival this year, and to a national conversation,” said Miff artistic director Al Cossar.

Venice-based Autlook Filmsales has boarded sales on “A Dog Called Money,” Seamus Murphy’s documentary about award-winning British musician Pj Harvey. The film is in the Panorama sidebar and will have its world premiere on 9 Feb.
Photo journalist and filmmaker Murphy accompanied Harvey on trips to Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Washington DC, which provided the inspiration and material for her album “The Hope Six Demolition Project.”
The film sees Harvey read accompanying diary excerpts and also captures the filming of the album, inside a box at London’s Somerset House. Murphy said “A Dog Called Money” is a film essay about the creative process. “Now we’re at the end I can describe it better: it’s really telling stories from the places that inspired the songs for the record,” he told Variety.

Pj Harvey is really focused on process right now. Her new album, The Hope Six Demolition Project, due in April, was inspired by her travels to Kosovo, Washington, D.C., and Afghanistan (her first collection of poetry, published last year, centered on those same trips), in collaboration with director Seamus Murphy. She wrote the album before a live audience inside a glass box in London's Somerset House, and now we have the video for the first song, “The Wheel.” In it, you’ll find Polly Jean in Kosovo taking notes, exploring curios found in abandoned buildings, and immersing herself in an unfamiliar culture. “When I’m writing a song I visualize the entire scene. I can see the colors, I can tell the time of day, I can sense the mood, I can see the light changing, the shadows moving, everything in that picture," Harvey said in a statement. "Gathering...
