As we have mentioned many times before, the most successful product of Asian cinema towards the US market (apart from anime) are the action/martial arts movies, and as such, it is by no surprise that the biggest industries of the continent and particularly S.Korea have invested heavily towards the particular category, with China following close by, in a genre that, most of the time, budget is the most crucial element. In that fashion, ultra violent and stylistic is the path S. Korea productions follow (this year), while China seems to be going more towards the sci-fi now that the Ip Man franchise has become somewhat preterit. Japan choose live-action adaptation or its rather famous franchises, while the duo of Tak Sakaguchi and Yudai Yamaguchi continue their effort to produce as realistic martial arts scenes as possible. China follows the stylistic martial arts approach, while India has come up...

This article contains John Wick: Chapter 4 spoilers.
Chad Stahelski’s filmmaking career began 30 years ago when he performed some stunts for a direct-to-video ninja flick called Brain Smasher… A Love Story starring Andrew Dice Clay. Some 18 films later, and Stahelski had worked his way up the stunt-person ladder to serve as the stunt double for Neo, aka Mr. Keanu Reeves himself, in The Matrix. It was the beginning a beautiful friendship. He continued to work with Reeves for the second and third Matrix installments, rising to martial arts stunt choreographer’s chair, and then the two reunited for Constantine in 2005. It was a fruitful collaborative relationship, however it would become something else entirely when less than a decade later they partnered again, now as director and star, for Stahelski’s directorial debut, John Wick (2014).
According to Stahelski, neither he nor Reeves thought John Wick would become what it is today.

The "John Wick" series has always had an exciting roster of actors. The first film had Willem Dafoe and John Leguizamo. The second one gave us our "The Matrix" reunion with Laurence Fishburne. The third one gave us Anjelica Huston and Halle Berry. And the fourth one expands things even further by adding Bill Skarsgård and Donnie Yen. Plus, you have the always-welcome Ian McShane and the late, great Lance Reddick across all four. When it comes to the series' villains, though, they make some rather unexpected choices.
Okay, the first film featured Alfie Allen and Michael Nyqvist as the antagonists, which are names that make sense, but the big bad of "John Wick: Chapter 2" is Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio, someone most people in the United States at least couldn't pick out of a lineup. Then "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum" rolls around, and while a good number of people would...

Keanu Reeves' retired hitman has overcome countless obstacles while carving a bloody path of vengeance throughout each and every "John Wick" movie. As if having his dog murdered and his sweet ride stolen by Theon Greyjoy (of all people!) wasn't bad enough, he then had to fend off both Ruby Rose and Common, NBA basketball star Boban Marjanović, and practically every contract killer in the world as he attempted to stay one step ahead of everyone else during the subsequent sequels. While the upcoming "John Wick: Chapter 4" will pit our favorite reluctant assassin against even more formidable foes, "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" also upped the ante considerably back in 2019 -- notably through the addition of the Shinobi, a pair of ninja assassins played by Cecep Arif Rahman and Yayan Ruhian.

Starting with Joko Anwar’s “Gundala”, Indonesia has been building its own superhero cinematic universe, in an effort that also seems to aim at creating a new star system within the country. Thus “The Legend of Gatotkaca” begins a new film series based on Satria Dewa, essentially introducing the character of Gatotkaca, who is not based on a comic but is a actually a character from the Mahabharata, while his story is interspersed with with elements from Indonesian mythology.

One of the best things about the John Wick franchise is watching Keanu Reeves‘ increasingly tired super-assassin cross fists with some of the martial arts greats. Stunt teams are some of the hardest working people in the industry. They literally put their lives on the line just to entertain us and yet there’s so little acknowledgement of their contributions. There is no Oscar for stunt work, but there should be. Netflix’s adaptation of Jupiter’s Legacy has secured one of the industry’s hottest stunt choreographers, one who is no stranger to superhero action, Philip J. Silvera.
If you’ve read Jupiter’s Legacy already, you know Frank Quitely’s artwork leaps off the page, splattered with intense moments of sanguineous bloodshed. Quitely’s graphic style is a perfect fit for Silvera, who says he’s always been inspired by the visceral violence of films like Goodfellas and The Godfather Part II.
“My action in the past has always had a bit of a lead pipe brutality to it,” confesses Silvera with a grin.

It was back in September when we first talked about an ambitious project starting up in Indonesia called Satria Dewa. It will be an eight picture series of films based off of an Indonesia comic books series and production was underway at the end of the Summer. In and among that annoucement were two names that fans of indonesian action cinema should recognize, Cecep Arif Rahman and Yayan Ruhiyan. Indeed. The baddies from both The Raid films and John Wick 3 were joining the cast. Filming of the first film Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca has been completed and the project now heads into post. A new trailer is being cut in hopes of presenting Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca to potential buyers at EFM in Berlin. In...

Prolific hitmaker Joko Anwar further cements his reputation as one of the non-English-speaking world’s foremost fantasy filmmakers with “Gundala,” an action-packed and emotionally satisfying adaptation of the treasured Indonesian comicbook created by Harya “Hasmi” Suraminata. Set in a bleak future-now Jakarta, where the lightning-powered superhero is the city’s last hope against corrupt politicians and a megalomaniac crime boss, “Gundala” packs a few too many characters and side-stories into the mix but as the first entry in a planned series it’ll do very nicely. On the strength of this, a successful franchise with strong international appeal could be in the making. After attracting 1.7 million admissions in domestic theatrical release in late 2019, Anwar’s latest hit will land on Well Go USA’s streaming platform on July 28.
Featuring in 23 comics published between 1969 and 1982, Gundala has made just one prior screen appearance, in Lilek Sudijo’s cheesy but enjoyable “Gundala...

Will “Jailbreak 2” be a battle between two different styles of traditional Southeast Asian martial arts?
The question will be answered when the sequel hits the big screen! Though the exact release date is still unknown since it will only begin production in 2021.
The Hollywood Reporter brought word that director Jimmy Henderson will be back to helm the sequel, with Jean Paul Ly, Dara Our and Tharoth Sam returning to star.
Also joining them in the upcoming movie, which currently goes by the title “Jailbreak: Round 2”, are Indonesian martial arts stars Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman.
This won’t be the duo’s first gig together as they’ve both previously worked on Indonesia’s much praised “The Raid” franchise and Hollywood titles such as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”.

Hey, Movie fans. We know what you're here for and we're here to give it to you. A couple of big, wide release movies are indeed hitting theaters this week, May 17, 2019. Two of them appear to be dramas while the other one is surely a hit action flick, and that's the one I'll be going to see in particular. The first movie that's set to hit theaters in wide release on May 17, 2019 is: "A Dog's Journey." It's listed as being a family movie. It's also a drama too. So, we'll call it a Family drama flick. It's rated PG. It stars: Josh Gad, Dennis Quaid, Marg Helgenberger, Betty Gilpin, Kathryn Prescott, and Henry Lau. It's actually a sequel to the original 2017 film titled, "A Dog's purpose." The plot summary for "A Dog's Journey" reads like this: "The soulful story of one devoted dog who finds the meaning of his own...

You can wait around and hope for a bigger, badder burst of action fireworks than John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, but you’d be kidding yourself. Wick 3, starring Keanu Reeves in the role he was born to play, hits you so hard in the thrill zone that instead of feeling exhausted when director Chad Stahelski calls a halt at 130 minutes, you’re panting for Chapter 4. Parabellum, by the way, is Latin for “prepare for war.” As if any fan is prepped for less.

Beginning with what would be the climax of a standard action film, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum runs like a well-oiled machine, delivering exactly what you want in ways you didn’t know you wanted. Picking up mere moments after chapter two’s finale, there’s only a few minutes on the clock before John Wick (Keanu Reeves) becomes “excommunicado” with a $14 million price tag on his head, and all of the world’s assassins on his tail. Blood is on his hands after a verboten killing on the Continental Hotel grounds so he’s on the run, and his options are running short.
What follows in this first act is a balletic, radiant, and relentless feat of action filmmaking, captured with the kind of clear-eyed, pleasure-filled elegance reminiscent of Jacques Demy–just imagine a bit more gunplay, knife throwing, dog chomping, horse kicking, and samurai swordplay on motorcycles. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is a gunsmoke hazy, bloody-knuckle ruthless, impossibly badass Wickian continuation. Every offered and foreseeable ass is proficiently kicked. Or karate chopped. Or headshot combo’d. Or shotgun blasted into oblivion. Or attack dog mauled. Or body-slammed through glass. Or swordplay carved. Or pulverized. Or…you catch my drift. Director Chad Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad are three films into their action spectacle franchise, and each has raised the last’s ante. More of the same? Yeah, I’m thinking John’s back…again.

We get inside the mind of Strike Back: Revolution's Wyatt in this interview with actor Daniel MacPherson.

Having gone through hell in the previous season, Revolution opens with suspended teammates Gracie (Alin Sumarwata), Mac (Warren Brown) and Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson) brought back into the action when a Russian nuclear device goes missing. Needless to say, there will be no shortage of shootouts, fistfights and probably some gratuitous nudity too.
It took MacPherson’s Wyatt a little while to adjust to working with a team last year, but the actor’s chemistry with his castmates helped make for a smooth transition between the new team and previous lead characters Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) and Stonebridge (Philip Winchester). Reeves’ character returns with a $14 million price tag on his head and an army of bounty-hunting killers on his trail. After killing a member of the shadowy international assassin’s guild, the High Table, John Wick is excommunicado, but the world’s most ruthless hit men and women await his every turn.
“We’re thrilled to bring audiences the third installment of our hit ‘John Wick’ franchise with an exciting cast and world-class creative team,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake. “This is our latest expansion of the ‘John Wick’ universe, which already spans film, television, gaming, and location-based entertainment.”

Keanu Reeves is suiting up again for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which marks a deadly May release date.
John Wick: Chapter 3 was about as inevitable of an action sequel as inevitable action sequels get (which is pretty gosh darn inevitable). Off the back of the success of the Keanu Reeves-headlined surprise 2014 hit, John Wick, and its equally crimson-soaked sequel, John Wick: Chapter 2, and even a mooted spinoff television project in The Continental, plans quickly moved forward to get cameras rolling for the third film in the series in time for a May 2019 arrival.
The threequel brandishes the nifty title, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. For those of you who didn't take Latin, "parabellum" means "prepare for war." It's typically the second half of the saying, "Si vis pacem, para bellum," or "If you want peace, prepare for war." Fitting, no?

With The Raid and The Raid 2, Gareth Evans and fight choreographer Yahan Ruhian have quite the knack for producing bone breaking, blood soaked fight scenes. But can this amazing choreography translate to a more toned down setting? That was the intention of the below video, made while frequent collaborators Ruhian, Cecep Arif Rahman, and Hannah Al Rashid visited Evans in Wales. Not only does it prove Evans doesn't need buckets of gore to pull off an amazing fight scene, now I want to make a full blown samurai epic. Check it below. Here's a little something we made... #samuraisilat https://t.co/1IUzsVEZcZ @YayanRuhian @HannahAlrashid @Cecep_Ar pic.twitter.com/irihDMyn8C — Gareth Evans (@ghuwevans) January 25, 2016...

While there's no word yet on what Gareth Evans' next movie might be, the director who created a reputation as one of the finest action sequence craftsmen across two "The Raid" movies, spent some time recently cutting together another short project. Whether or not it blossoms into something, we'll see, but he's proud enough of the endeavor to put it online. Read More: SXSW '12 Interview: 'The Raid' Director Gareth Evans Talks Sequel & Going Hollywood; Mike Shinoda & Joseph Trapanese Discuss Scoring The Film Over the weekend, Evans posted his untitled short film/test footage material to YouTube, and revealed it was a test to see if he could create carnage that would fit the box of a PG-13/12A rating — basically, he wants to make something his kids could see. Hannah Al Rashid, Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman star in the little scene, and here's the...

Gareth Evans is, with the exception of George Miller, the finest action filmmaker working today. Both The Raid and The Raid 2 exhibit such a masterful command of action choreography that it's almost embarrassing watching some of the half-ass fight scenes in Hollywood action films afterwards. Evans was approached for several big Hollywood movies, and there was one in particular that he came very close to making. In the end, he opted to continue to make films outside of the system, working instead with the same stunt team and the same actors that have made his films so far so compelling. He's been gearing up for his next film, Blister, for a while now, and I'm dying to see whatever it is. In the meantime, though, I know he's been just as eager to get back behind the camera, and he's been thinking about how to adapt the silat that...

This is badass! The Raid 1 & 2 director Gareth Evans has released a short film online that he produced entirely on his own. It's a short samurai film shot in Wales that is a test sequence to prove that they can film action similar to The Raid films but with a PG-13 rating. The main cast includes Hannah Al Rashid, Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman. This isn't anything more than a test sequence, but it's awesome to see and hopefully good inspiration for filmmakers trying to figure out how to shoot action. I dig the black & white style, as it allows the viewer to appreciate the composition. I'm a fan of Gareth Evans (watch my interview from a few years ago) and I think he's one of the most talented action directors making films today. Enjoy! Storyline from YouTube: In a time of civil war, a young warrior is given the...

Gareth Evans, the director of The Raid films, made a badass samurai short film that you need to watch now! Evans is easily one of the best action film directors working today, and while we wait to see what his next film will be, we are treated to this short which centers on three dueling warriors. Evans called on the cast of his previous films to star in the short, including Yayah Ruhian (The Raid, The Raid 2), Cecep Arif Rahman (The Raid 2), and Hannah Al Rashid (V/H/S 2 “Safe Haven”). It must've been fun for this team to get together again to create something so awesome. Here's the synopsis:
In a time of civil war, a young warrior is given the task of delivering a treaty between two rival lords. During her journey through the woods however, she finds herself hunted by two assassins intent on intercepting...

While we all wait patiently (or maybe not) for The Raid 3, director Gareth Evans has not been idle. Indeed, after not having picked up a camera for a while, he decided to make a short when his colleagues Cecep Arif Rahman, Yayan Ruhian and Hannah Al Rashid were visiting him in his native Wales. In a time of civil war, a young warrior is given the task of delivering a treaty between two rival lords. Gareth Evans has created some of the most elaborately constructed and enthrallingly directed action sequences of all time in his martial arts movies "The Raid: Redemption" and "The Raid 2," and now he's unleashed another stunning bit of action choreography in a new short film posted to his YouTube page. The film is a pre-visualization of a fight scene and centers around a female warrior who finds herself hunted by two assassins. If the scene seems a bit tame compared to Evans' blood-squirting, head-popping, heavy R-rated action set pieces from "The Raid," just know that it was the director's every intention to stay within PG-13 limits. Posting a short commentary on Twitter, the director wrote: "Had the pleasure of having Yayan Ruhian, Cecep Arif Rahman and Hannah Al Rashid visit me in Wales over the summer holidays for a week or so. While here, we made the following little short...

If the wait for another Gareth Evans movie is starting to gnaw at you the way so many fists and knives cut into an Indonesian gangster, any small piece from the director should make that interim somewhat easier — or all the more difficult. Good news: the writer-director and his frequent acting-choreography collaborators Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman (recently wasted in Star Wars: The Force Awakens) have developed a black-and-white, samurai-centered short aiming “to create choreography that maintains the style and rhythm set out in their prior work (The Raid 1&2) while staying within the parameters of a PG-13/12A audience friendly certification.” [Criterion Cast]

You may have thought we’d gotten every reveal we were going to get with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens as we’re so close to release, but this image from one of the tie-in books provides our first official look at the characters played by Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, who are best known for The Raid movies.
Ruhian plays Tasu Leech, leader of the Kanjiklub gang, while Uwais is his right hand man, Razoo Quin-Fee. The smaller image may well be their fellow Raid star Cecep Arif Rahman (“The Assassin” from the final Berandal kitchen battle), but it’s hard to tell for sure.
More News From The Web
We don’t know a whole lot about these guys, but it has been confirmed that the Kanjiklub are a notorious intergalactic team of criminals, which suggests they’ll be causing headaches for Rey, Finn and the rest of our heroes.

Here we have our first official look at Kanjiklub gang members Tasu Leech (Yayan Ruhian) and Razoo Quin-Fee (Iko Uwais) from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The smaller image is probably the character played by their fellow The Raid ass-kicker Cecep Arif Rahman, but obviously it's difficult to verify that. We don't know a whole lot about these guys, but the Kanjiklub are apparently a notorious band of intergalactic criminals so expect them to play an antagonistic role towards Rey, Finn, Han and the others. It's also reasonable to assume that they'll be putting their considerable martial arts abilities to use in some capacity in the film. Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to be released on December 18th,...

It has begun. Now is the moment when it goes from the hype of the hypothetical to the actual quantifiable event. Is "Star Wars" worth the $4 billion that Disney paid for it, and will "The Force Awakens" truly return the series to its place at the top of the pop culture pyramid? We won't really know those answers until December 18th, when the film arrives in theaters, but tonight at midnight, in time zone after time zone around the world, the first real test begins. That's right… Force Friday is here. There's no way I'm going anywhere near a store tonight. I was there in 1999 when they did this, and I think a small part of my innocence died watching grown men elbow children out of the way to buy Jar Jar Binks figures for a movie none of them had seen yet. This time, there's a nostalgia factor built...

(Oi! The article is down here!) Yesterday, the biggest news was probably the announcement that Donnie Yen might be joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode VIII (mentioned here). Before that, there was much rejoicing when Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman, all three of them famous fighters from the two The Raid films, were confirmed in the cast of Episode VII - The Force Awakens. Such name-dropping, whether as rumor or as confirmed fact, never fails to get me to start imagining things, scenes, plotlines. We all have our favorite not-yet-made Star Wars playing in our head somewhere, same as we all have our favorite not-yet-made Batman or Superman. I think a good way to judge whether or not you thought the past year of film was a good one is how difficult it was to compile your top ten of the year. Did you struggle to fill spots or were there a bunch of films vying for positionsc 2014 ended up in the latter category for me, which is a very good thing. I was impressed with the slate of films released this year, mainly from the smaller side. Major Hollywood studios did manage to crank out a couple of high quality, blockbuster entertainments, like Edge of Tomorrow and X-Men: Days of Future Past, which, in my opinion, is two more than they usually produce. Obviously, we are not far away enough to know how remembered 2014 will be, and if it is, for whatc Will people remember this as the year Marvel could put out whatever and people would...

This March will mark my fourth straight year attending the South by Southwest Film Festival. Every year creates many memorable moments, whether it be seeing the world premiere of Short Term 12 when it was on no one's radar or seeing Iko Uwais and Cecep Arif Rahman fight on stage when there was a problem with the screening file for The Raid 2, I always have a good time seeing as many movies I can in a short amount of time. And I am happy to be covering it for the first time as press for RopeofSilicon. The opening night films for SXSW have been hit and miss. My first year it was The Cabin in the Woods, and unfortunately, they cannot all be that great. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Chef followed after that. This year, SXSW has chosen the documentary Brand: A Second Coming as the opening night film.

There are now two crucial trios in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The first is Han, Luke and Leia, obviously. And the second one emerged this week when it was revealed that a trio of martial artist fighters from The Raid 2 had been cast in the movie. The news comes from Twitch Film's Todd Brown, who was a producer on The Raid 2 so he certainly has verifiable ties to Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman. They are the powerhouse trio who punched, kicked, jumped, stabbed, shot and just dominated the screen in one of the best martial arts movies ever made. It's possible that they'll appear in the movie under makeup (as martial artist Ray Park did as Darth Maul) or that they're just body doubles for some of the other actors, but...
