Actor Patricia Arquette won her first Oscar for starring in Before filmmaker Richard Linklater’s 2015 feature Boyhood. But the film itself didn’t win Hollywood’s biggest accolade, which disappointed the star.

Boyhood was one of director Richard Linklater’s most intriguing projects. The film was shot over the span of 12 years, starring Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as a divorced couple raising two children. Boyhood was recognized by the Academy for its experimental filmmaking. The ceremony nominated it for several categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress, which Arquette won.
Even after winning the award, the Pretty Smart star still couldn’t believe her Oscar experience.
”It was surreal. I felt like I had been shot up with some weird drug that changed time,” she once said according to Contact Music.

While previous incarnations of Salem Horror Fest occured in tourist-heavy October, this year’s sixth installment smoothly shifted to two weekends in April. The official selections include 20 features and 37 shorts, along with repertory programming, celebrity guests, live podcasts, panels, after parties, and more.
Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…
Bury the Bride
After making his feature directorial debut with last year’s horror anthology Allegoria, Powerman 5000 frontman Spider One returns with Bury the Bride, exhibiting considerable growth as a filmmaker in a short span of time. He channels a redneck-fueled grit similar to his elder brother Rob Zombie’s ourve, particularly The Devil’s Rejects, coupled with Quentin Tarantino-esque idiosyncrasies.
The film follows bride-to-be June along with her older sister (co-writer Krsy Fox) and three of her closest friends into the California desert for a bachelorette party at a rural house owned by her mysterious fiance,...

It’s been nine years since Richard Linklater, chiefly) to tell a coming-of-age story like no other.
In a major new interview with Empire, to mark the new Arrow Video release of Boyhood, Linklater reflected on the legacy of his epic tale of young life a decade after stopping shooting – and while there are no plans yet to continue the story of Mason Jr., the writer-director opened up the possibility of the character returning down the line. “There were things we could have done – it just hasn’t really grabbed,” he tells Empire. “For all we know, we could just jump in at age 30 or something. Who the hell knows?” As he points out, Boyhood ends as Mason reaches college – a slice of life explored in other Linklater films. “I know what happened next – in fact, it’s represented in a bunch of movie I’ve made [about] college life… Before Sunrise,...

Oscars 2023: ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ will try to break this recent trend in Best Editing
Best Editing has always been one of those crucial categories for the Oscar race due to how its nominees almost always happen to include whatever ends up taking home Best Picture. In fact, “Coda” and “Birdman” are the only films since 1981 to win the top prize without a Best Editing nomination. The correlation for winning isn’t so strong; no film has won both picture and editing since 2012’s “Argo”. However, there is indeed a correlation between the editing winner and another category: Best Sound.
This year, there are two Best Editing contenders that seem to stand far above the rest in our Gold Derby odds: “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Though “Top Gun” is currently on top, many suspect “Everything Everywhere” to be the spoiler. It makes sense; a common way of predicting this category is to think about which film has the “most editing.

On February 18, Oscar watchers are sure to be paying attention to the results of the DGA Awards. The guild is aces at forecasting the eventual Oscar winner for Best Director. Since the guild aligned itself with the academy calendar in 1950, 64 DGA picks have gone on to pick up an Academy Award as well; the most recent of the eight misses came in 2020 when Sam Mendes (“1917) won with the guild but Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) took home the Oscar.
We’re predicting that Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”) will extend his record with a fourth win with the guild; he previously prevailed for “The Color Purple” (1985), “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998). He faces fierce competition both here and at the Oscars from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Also in the hunt for the DGA prize are two other Oscar contenders — Todd Field (“TÁR”) and Martin McDonagh...

With Glass in theaters on Jan. 18, M. Night Shyamalan has officially closed the book on an epic trilogy nearly two decades in the making. That's a pretty incredible scope, when you think about it. It's even more incredible to think that the director managed to secure two leads to reprise their roles 19 years after they originated them; Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson are back in full force as our respective hero and villain, David Dunn and Elijah "Mr. Glass" Price. But as it turns out, these aren't the only two actors to make a miraculous return for the big finale.
In addition to the aforementioned two, Charlayne Woodard is also back as Elijah's mother. Not only that, but, Spencer Treat Clark is back as David Dunn's son, Joseph Dunn! Yep, it's unmistakable: that really is the same bright-eyed little boy who appeared on screen way back in 2000. Clark's return...

This article marks Part 19 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Awards, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
After scoring her 18th Oscar nomination with “August: Osage County” (2013), Meryl Streep lined up a trio of promising projects for the following year. That 19th nomination would, no doubt, be lurking around the corner.
First, there was “The Giver,” the long-awaited film adaptation of Lois Lowry‘s best-selling dystopian young adult novel. The project paired Streep with, for the first time, two Hollywood heavyweights – Oscar winner Jeff Bridges and Australian director Philip Noyce. A late summer release, “The Giver” mustered decent box office receipts but was resoundingly trashed by critics.

With Boyhood in the rearview and a few years until he may return with another Before movie, Richard Linklater is continuing his prolific streak. After last fall’s Last Flag Flying, this May will see the release of his Cate Blanchett-led Where’d You Go, Bernadette, and now he’s already prepping to shoot his next film.
Taking him back to the summer of 1969 in Houston, Linklater’s new, currently untitled film (aka Untitled Space Age Movie) will take place from a boy’s perspective as he witnesses the moon landing, launched from the Nasa base in his hometown. While one can expect a fitting soundtrack for the era, not much else is known about the film, including the cast, but the director has put a call out if you have any materials from the era. See the notice below from Texas Film Commission (via The Playlist).
