Art, camp and Indigenous culture collide in the Nitv/Sbs-commissioned quiz show Faboriginal, produced by Noble Savage Pictures.
Hosted and co-created by actor and comedian Steven Oliver, the 8 x 30 serial trivia show features an all Indigenous cast and guest panellists who are challenged by the quizmaster on Indigenous art and culture. Production has recently wrapped, to air early 2020 on Nitv followed by Sbs On Demand.
“We’ve built a show that is wickedly funny, entertaining, smart and political. Faboriginal is unapologetically black, unapologetically camp and unapologetically art focused,” says Noble Savage Pictures producer Majhid Heath.
Heath saw taking on the light entertainment format space as natural new ground to break. It was a way of engaging audiences with Indigenous art and culture with levity and comedy, while celebrating established and emerging Indigenous actors, writers, musicians and artists.

Dame June Whitfield, known for her work on “Terry and June,” the “Carry On” movies and “Absolutely Fabulous” has died.
The BBC is reporting that Whitfield died on Friday night at 93.
Whitfield’s career touched just about every part of the entertainment industry from early radio comedies, acting in the “Carry On” films, to co-leading the beloved BBC sitcom “Terry and June” that ran from 1979 to 1987. She kept working long into her career even appearing in the 1998 London-based “Friends” episode, the new revamped episodes of “Doctor Who” starring David Tennant and landing a recurring role of Gran/Mother in Jennifer Saunders’ “Absolutely Fabulous.” She also continued to appear on radio, voicing Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple for nine years on the BBC Radio 4.
When Whitfield was appointed with the honor of damehood at the age of 92, Charles, Prince of Wales told her this celebration had been “some time coming.

Jodie Comer is extraordinary as international assassin Villanelle in Killing Eve. Here are her best roles so far…
Funny and terrifying, vulnerable and cruel, human and alien, clever and supremely unfazed but also petty, childish and an utter, fizzing moon unit… the combination of elements Jodie Comer brings to her role in Killing Eve is extraordinary.
It’s the kind of performance you can’t afford to look away from because you’ll miss what she does next - chuckle or smile or look out from behind her eyes with the amused coldness of a millennia-old tundra, or, you know, all three at the same time, while ramming a Stanley knife blade repeatedly into someone’s heart.

Lucy looks at a handful of the movies she's grown up with, and examines how they treat mental illness...
Associating mental illness with horror, violence and downright strange goings on was as rife as e-numbers and spiral perms back in the 80s. That's as far as my memory takes me anyway. But in fact, this unfair association goes back further still, many years before I was brought into this world via forceps in 1978 (I was always a stubborn child).
Going back even further, before we had the movies, Bethlem was, and still is, a hospital in London for people suffering from mental illness. Whilst it might be a respected hospital today, it has a chequered past...
It is reported that, in the 1590s, the governors allowed the general public to come and gawp at Bethlem's patients as a source of entertainment - paid for much like we...

We’re trying something a bit different this week. Rae Earl is the author of the brilliantly funny, sharp and often heart-breaking My Mad Fat Diary books, which were adapted by Channel 4 into a similarly ace TV series. Based on her real-life teenage diaries, they shared Rae’s experience of trying to cope with teenage life and mental health problems in late-eighties/early nineties Lincolnshire.

As producers continue to experiment with TV storytelling, the epistolary format has recently popped up multiple times – from Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” to Hulu’s highly anticipated adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Epistolary storytelling — told through diaries, letters, newspaper clippings and other documents — has long been a staple of the fiction world. The digital age has allowed this documentation to evolve from the written word to include formats such as emails, recordings, interviews and blogs.

In this era of “Peak TV” there doesn’t seem to be enough time to bother with drama and comedy imports. But while there are more than enough American shows to binge, it would be a mistake to bypass great foreign TV. After all, that would mean missing out on fan favorites like “Doctor Who,” “Orphan Black,” “Downton Abbey” and “Sherlock.”
Foreign TV has spawned hit U.S. adaptations like “Homeland” and “The Office,” as well as pale imitations of the original. Remember the failed American versions of “The It Crowd” and “Coupling”? Yeah, we’d like to forget ’em as well.

A nearly 600-page biography of a French filmmaker would not make every summer reading list, but any discerning cinephile will consider Éric Rohmer: A Biography. Don't be put off by its glib, teen-oriented title, E4's My Mad Fat Diary was brilliantly funny, well-written, proper human drama...
As an outsider looking in, My Mad Fat Diary never appeared to be selling what I wanted to buy. Bowing to the logic that anyone who zanily declares ‘I’m mad, me!’ in real life deserves to be given a wide berth, its big, fat gypsy-wedding-alike title didn’t appeal.
Neither did its teen-skewed content, or as much of it as I’d glimpsed from E4’s promos. Cheesy love triangles and mooning over pop stars? Not for me. And that goes double for shows that get their laughs by insulting characters for not conforming to the rules of conventional telly attractiveness. Move along, please. Not interested.
As My Mad Fat Diary approached its final series though, I witnessed something puzzling. People were preparing themselves for bereavement. Fans...

A first-look picture for the second series of My Mad Fat Diary had been released by Channel 4.
The critically-acclaimed E4 comedy drama returns in February and the preview snap suggests that Rae and her friends' antics are going to be just as manic as in the first series.
Digital Spy's writers ranked the show's first series inside its Top 25 TV shows of 2013.
Sharon Rooney, Nico Mirallegro, Ciara Baxendale, Darren Evans, Jodie Corner, Dan Cohen and Jordan Murphy will all be back in the second series.
The series is based on Rae Earl's 2007 book about her teenage years in the '80s. The E4 show is slightly different with the setting updated to the '90s.
Channel 4's press release for the new episodes teases: "Series two kicks off at the hazy end of the long hot summer of 1996, just after Rae has finally revealed the truth about...

We absolutely adored My Mad Fat Diary when it hit E4 earlier this year, so we were thrilled when Sharon Rooney got nominated for a Scottish BAFTA (alongside Ford Kiernan and Peter Mullan) for her role as Rae. Given that this is her first major acting role, it's a pretty big achievement - and also probably a rather strange experience. We wanted to get a bit of an idea what it's like being nominated for one of those famous gongs, so we rang up Sharon to talk about period skirts, pyjamas, oinking and much, much more ahead of the ceremony on Sunday. Read on for her 10 BAFTA tips and tricks!
1. Check it really is you that has been nominated.
"It was kind of weird [being nominated]," Sharon said. "It was one of those moments where you go, 'Is that actually me, or is that someone else with the same name?' It was really weird.

There is a tangible moment in every teenage life when possession of an intact hymen becomes a blushing V-shaped brand of immaturity seared into your consciousness. For Rae that moment is now. Her virginity has become as much of a burden as her sixteen stone frame and her cumbersome insecurity. In the summer of 1996 the really real world revolves around the Seattle sound and the outcome of the Britpop battle. All the good grungy girls and boys thread beads onto their DMs and sit down at James’ command. Kurt Cobain lingers as the voice of a bereft generation and Rae just got released from a psychiatric ward. Luckily her Mum has told everyone she’s been ‘finding herself’ in France. So everything’s going to be fine. Not!
Tom Bidwell’s My Mad Fat Diary journals Rae’s first steps away from the hospital and her metamorphosis from outpatient to fledgling cool kid.

My Mad Fat Diary is to return for a second series on E4.
The '90s-set teen drama - which stars Sharon Rooney as troubled but fun-loving Rae Earl - will start shooting six new episodes this summer.
The first series of My Mad Fat Diary launched in January and has a current average viewership of 1.2m.
"We are beyond delighted to be able to take the stories and characters of My Mad Fat Diary to a second series," said exec producer Jude Liknaitzky. "We have been overwhelmed by the response to the show and can't wait to bring more of Rae's stories to life."
Sophie Gardiner, Channel 4 Commissioning Editor for Drama, added: "Thanks to [head writer] Tom Bidwell's funny and insightful writing, and Sharon Rooney's stand-out performance as the great Rae Earl, My Mad Fat Diary has captured the hearts of the E4 audience, and we are delighted...

February means only one thing - Valentine's Day. And no matter whether you're spending February 14 cuddled up with a loved one or in your PJs surrounded by cats and empty ice cream tubs, there's nothing like a TV box set to make your evening a success.
Read on for more details on our five favourite box sets this month...
Girls - Season 1 (February 4)
Starring: Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet
Rated: 18
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
Enjoying the second season of Lena Dunham's popular (if divisive) comedy Girls? Then you'll probably want to pick up the first season on DVD, or Blu-ray - if you want to relive all that terrible sex in crystal-clear quality.
We're rather fond of Girls here at Tube Talk - despite what the cynics might think (and what the title might suggest), it's not just for female telly-watchers. It's just plain funny - enjoy...
