We have some bad news for fans of Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot.
Disney+ announced Friday that both series had been canceled after their second seasons.
The news is hardly surprising.
Some big changes are happening at Disney, including the decision to space out the Marvel Cinematic Universe series and movies.
In June, Peter Rice exited Disney. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source said that the second-season renewals for both series were an example of his "questionable deal-making."
That would suggest that neither series performed well enough during their freshman seasons to warrant renewals.
The issue with streaming services is that the viewership statistics are rarely made public, meaning that we only typically hear about a show's numbers if it is successful.
Even then, it's hard to judge what will happen.
For example, the series premiere of the Gossip Girl reboot on HBO Max was said to...

Disney+ has canceled the John Stamos-led sports comedy-drama Big Shot, as well as The Mighty Ducks: Changers, both after two seasons, Deadline has confirmed.
Created by David E. Kelley, Dean Lorey and Brad Garrett, with Lorey serving as showrunner, Big Shot centered on Marvyn Korn (Stamos). After he is ousted from his position as head coach for an NCAA basketball team, he is given a chance at redemption with a coaching position at Westbrook, an elite private high school for girls, and soon learns that the teenage players require empathy and vulnerability – foreign concepts for the stoic Coach Korn.

Move over, Ariel, Hollywood’s original mermaid movie, is back to make waves again! According to Deadline, Sarah Rothchild is writing the latest draft of Disney/Imagine/Free Association’s Splash remake. The project is reimagining Ron Howard’s 1984 comedy starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah as unlikely lovers from land and sea. To mix things up, Jillian Bell stars in the Splash remake in the role played by Hanks, while Channing Tatum stars in the role portrayed by Hannah. You head me. Tatum is strapping his floaties on to play a merman!
The original Spalsh starred Hanks, Hannah, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Dody Goodman, and Shecky Greene. The romantic comedy became a significant hit for Disney after swimming toward 70 million at the domestic box office. Splash was Howard’s first hit and helped put him on the map for decades. The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Season 2 has taken flight on Disney+, and we’ve got an exclusive clip from an upcoming episode. The footage features Lauren Graham (Alex Morrow) and Josh Duhamel (Coach Cole) negotiating for the first pick in an upcoming draft. Using clever negotiation tactics, Alex points out that the optics of Coach Cole getting the first pick at his own hockey camp is an awkward look. His position in the draft appears like favoritism no matter how you slice it, and in today’s watchful world, you don’t want to look like you’ve got an advantage over your student body. The clip speaks to Alex’s savvy as the Ducks coach and shows a softer side to Coach Cole audiences have yet to see much of this season.

"The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" on Disney+ did a fine job of reviving the beloved family friendly sports franchise for a new generation. The series basically took the bones of the original movie and expanded them into a 10-episode story arc that took the ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team that the Mighty Ducks had become, had a scrappy new team of underdogs knock that chip off their shoulder, and brought them back down to Earth for a little reminder that hockey is also supposed to be fun.
Led by 12-year old Evan Morrow (Brady Noon of "Good Boys") and his mother/makeshift coach Alex (Lauren Graham), complete with a little help from crotchety former coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez), the team known as the Don't Bothers squared off with the haughty, elite youth hockey team and reclaimed the name of the Mighty Ducks for themselves, albeit in an unofficial match...

Disney+ Has released a new trailer for season two of “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.” The Disney Branded Television series, produced by ABC Signature, will premiere Wednesday, September 28 with new episodes dropping weekly on the streaming service. After winning back the Mighty Ducks team name last year, our squad-with-heart and their coach Alex Morrow (Lauren Graham) take to the road to attend an intense summer hockey institute in California run by charming yet hardcore former NHL player, Colin Cole (Josh Duhamel). It’s a place for kids to get excellent at hockey – without school to get in the way. As our Ducks try to survive in this super-competitive environment, they’re faced with the question: Can you win summer?

"The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" brought a new generation of peewee hockey players to Disney+ last spring. In the show's first season, 12-year-old Evan Morrow (Brady Noon) was cut from the titular team, which had turned into an ultra-competitive powerhouse. His mother, Alex (Lauren Graham), formed a new team of ragtag underdogs called the Don't Bothers, and she even got some reluctant but much needed help from former Mighty Ducks coach and hockey player Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez), who had since become the owner of a low level ice rink.
Of course, by the end of the first season this team of misfits and their mismatched coaches banded together, and in an unofficial but crucial game with a high stakes bet, the Don't Bothers defeated the elite Mighty Ducks and took the team name for themselves. But in the upcoming second season of "Game Changers," the Ducks will be out...

Josh Duhamel has joined Season 2 of the Disney Plus series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.”

"You in football country now!" Netflix has revealed the official trailer for Home Team, the next comedy produced by Sandler's Happy Madison for Netflix. So, uh, get ready for this... The story about New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton coaching his son's 6th grade football team, when Payton was suspended for the entire 2012 season as a result of his role in the Saints' Bountygate scandal. So this is pretty much the plot of The Mighty Ducks, but with a youth football team. And a real coach. The cast features Kevin James as Coach Payton, plus Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, Jackie Sandler, Gary Valentine, Tait Blum, Maxwell Simkins, Jacob Perez, Bryant Tardy, Manny Magnus, Liam Kyle, Christopher Farrar, Merek Mastrov, and Isaiah Mustafa. Yeah this looks as cheesy and bland as you're probably expecting. Here's the trailer (+ poster) for Charles Francis Kinnane & Daniel Kinnane's Home Team, from YouTube:...

Emilio Estevez Not Returning for ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’ Season 2 Over Vaccine Requirement
Emilio Estevez will not be returning for Season 2 of Disney Plus’ “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” Variety has confirmed.
According to a source close to the production, Estevez’s departure is due to a disagreement over ABC Signature’s Covid-19 vaccination requirement, as he would not confirm that he would comply with the policy. Therefore, the studio decided not to renew his contract for Season 2. Under the recent return-to-work agreement between studios and unions, production for “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” requires vaccination against Covid-19 for everyone in Zone A, which includes all actors and crew members who come into contact with them.
It is unclear exactly how Estevez’s character will be written off of the show. Disney had no comment on his departure from the show and a representative for Estevez did not respond to a request for comment.

The Mighty Ducks will be forging ahead without the sole link to the movies.
Per Deadline, Emilio Estevez will not be returning as Coach Bombay for the second season of the TV adaptation of the series.
The outlet states Disney decided against picking up the actor's contract for more episodes after much back and forth regarding the series' mandate for Covid vaccination.
Furthermore, Deadline states that Emilio refused to assure he would comply with the mandate, which complicated his return to the franchise.
Instead, Disney opted to move ahead in a new direction, making changes to the scripts.
The last-minute decision means production will not get underway until next year, meaning fans likely have a lengthy hiatus in store.
Like many film and TV projects, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers has added a mandatory vaccination policy, which has been a part of an agreement between studios and unions.

“Home Team,” a Netflix film that stars Kevin James as New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, has announced its full cast, including new additions Taylor Lautner and Rob Schneider.
Payton revealed that Netflix was making a movie about his life last month, and the film centers on Payton in 2012 when the coach was suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goddell for the entire 2012 season related to the team’s role in the “Bountygate” scandal, in which the team was accused of paying out bounties or bonuses to players who successfully injured opposing team players. The film shows how Payton began to reassess his life and took a job as the offensive coach for his son Connor’s sixth-grade football team in the Dallas area.

While Nick appears willing to listen to Winnie's woes, her boss, Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) seems less than interested. A tearful Winnie starts off the clip with, "I thought we were soulmates." However, according to the wise-for-his-years Nick, "Cocoa Chad is a jerk." With a name like Cocoa Chad, who's surprised? "You're so much better than him," Nick encourages Winnie. Maybe more than anything, “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” is a feat of casting. Yes, the Disney+ revival is a continuation of a beloved film series that helped birth not just a generation of fans but an NHL franchise (and an animated spinoff with a theme song still lodged in the subconscious of every kid that watched more than one episode).
But all of that previous success would never have happened if the youth hockey team that helped get the whole thing started almost 30 years ago didn’t feel like an actual team. So even though this new “Mighty Ducks” TV show finds the Ducks as a junior hockey powerhouse made up of heartless bullies, the new ragtag squad that forms in its wake is a club that’s instantly worth rooting for.

The Ducks are back, but they’re no longer the good guys! In Disney+’s The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, the iconic team now subscribes to the cutthroat mentality they previous railed against.
The first episode kicks off with the Ducks training at their state-of-the art facility. Alex (Lauren Graham), a single mom, rushes to get her son Evan (Boardwalk Empire’s Brady Noon) to practice. She sits with a group of hockey moms who are super invested in their children’s careers. They’re monitoring the kids’ protein intake, hiring specialists to evaluate performances, and are putting their kids...

Whether lacing up against the peewee league’s elite Hawks, Team Iceland at the Junior Goodwill Games or Eden Hall’s dominant varsity team, The Mighty Ducks built a lasting legacy as the scrappy underdogs who play the game fairly and still end up on top.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (premiering Friday, March 26) flips the script on the iconic team, who are now the bad guys in the Disney+ series created by Steve Brill (who wrote all three films). Now a powerhouse organization led by Coach T (The Descendants’ Dylan Playfair), the Ducks operate under a cutthroat ideology in which winning is everything.

It doesn’t take long for “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” to both acknowledge and gently reject its roots. Opening on a middle school hockey tryout with all the flashy pomp and circumstances of a primetime NHL game, the new Disney Plus series from Steve Brill, Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith makes it clear that the Ducks of 2021 are nothing like the scrappy underdogs of 1992. Almost 30 years later, the Minnesota youth team has become exactly the kind of hyper-competitive behemoth that it once stood defiantly against. The kids are ruthless, the coach even worse, and the stands are full of parents dreaming of a direct line to fancy colleges. Adding insult to injury, everyone seems to remember the Ducks of old as something of an adorable misstep. “Can you believe they used to quack?” asks one scoffing kid to another, oblivious to the anguished offscreen screams of all the former...

There are only so many stories to tell, especially in the picked-over underdog-sports genre. So it doesn’t feel egregious that the new Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers blatantly rips off the premise of Cobra Kai by making the heroes from the movies — a ragtag-turned-champion youth hockey team — into the bad guys. After all, the overarching plot of Cobra Kai — unhappy middle-aged man finds renewed purpose by teaching kids about the sport he loved in his youth — is more or less the same as the one that introduced...

In this 10-episode new series, the beloved Mighty Ducks team from the 1990s film franchise have evolved beyond scrappy underdog status to become an ultra-competitive powerhouse team — a team that cuts 12-year-old Evan Morrow (Brady Noon), leading to the creation of a new team for which to root.
“I want you to think about all of the other kids who have been told that they’re too small or too slow, they just want to get out there and play. Let’s start our own team. All we need is an ice rink,” Lauren Graham, who plays Evan’s mom Alex, says in a teaser for the show, which you can watch above.

Joining the team are Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Luke Islam, Kiefer O’Reilly, Taegen Burns, Bella Higginbotham and DJ Watts.
The setting is present-day Minnesota, and the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. Netflix’s Project Power has been riding high at the top of the streaming service’s most-watched movies list since its debut earlier this month, but it’s just been dethroned by an unlikely contender. According to the latest data from FlixPatrol, Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s high-octane superhero fest is no longer the number one film on the platform when it comes to the global charts. Instead, that honor currently goes to another Netflix original, The Sleepover.
Directed by Trish Sie, The Sleepover is an action-comedy in the vein of Spy Kids. The movie stars Malin Akerman and Ken Marino as a couple of parents whose action-packed double lives are exposed when they’re suddenly kidnapped. It’s down to their kids – played by Sadie Stanley and Maxwell Simkins – and two of their friends to save the day while navigating the murky world of master thievery and espionage they’ve been thrust into.
