Exclusive: After six years as a manager at More/Medavoy, Stephen Belden is going it alone, having launched his own management and production company, Death Wish Entertainment.
“The dream,” Belden said, “has always been to work with a core group of clients that I absolutely adore as artists and as human beings and to be able to produce projects with and for those clients. With this company I get to focus on exactly that and I couldn’t be more excited.”
Belden explained that the name Death Wish is “a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fact that it’s harder than ever to be working in the entertainment industry right now,” underscoring at the same time that he “couldn’t be more optimistic about what the future holds for the up and coming generation of actors, writers, directors, and producers that I work with.”
Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to those at his former company.

I'm not sure what ritual sacrifice happened to gift us with such a phenomenal year of horror films, but scary movie fans feasted on some delicious frights throughout 2022. From the madcap twists in "Orphan: First Kill" to the moving cannibalistic romance in "Bones and All," horror fans were treated to a gore-filled buffet of murder, monsters, and bloody motivations. Even the Marvel Cinematic Universe got into the spooky season, releasing their fantastic Halloween special and loving ode to Universal Horror films, "Werewolf By Night."
But I'm not here to rank the year's best horror films: I'm here to see who is the baddest b***h in 2022. To make my list, the villain in question has to have more than brute strength, a mask, and a knife. Catchphrases are cute, but what these villains need to possess (and represent) is an enduringly terrifying idea. What's harrowing on-screen must creep off-screen, seeding...

Last year, we saw a list of thirteen movies that would be riffed during the new season of the classic series Mystery Science Theater 3000, which is now being released through the show’s own indie streaming platform The Gizmoplex. On that list was a movie called The Christmas Dragon, which was said to be about “a group of orphans going on a journey to restore the lost magic and save Christmas.” What wasn’t mentioned at that time is that original MST3K host Joel Hodgson will be returning to riff The Christmas Dragon with current hosts Jonah Ray and Emily Marsh!
The Christmas Dragon episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be reaching the Gizmoplex on December 16th. The livestream premiere begins at 8pm Eastern. Here’s the information:
For the first time in Mystery Science Theater 3000 history, Three hosts will be riffing one Christmas turkey! In this very special holiday episode,...

During the 31 days of Halloween, Shudder has a spooky lineup of frights for any horror fan and we recommend two movies for these chilly October nights.
Following the success of last year’s hit V/H/S/94 comes this year’s V/H/S/99.
V/H/S/99, which debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, premiered on Shudder on Thursday, October 20. The film features five new stories from filmmakers Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts, Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls) and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream).
V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium.

V/H/S/94 debuted to rave reviews from film critics, with The New York Times calling the film “a grisly, gory gem,” and a 90 certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. V/H/S/94 was the biggest movie premiere in Shudder history, setting a...

With so many streaming platforms and video-on-demand options, it's inevitable for can't-miss titles to slip through the cracks. Horror fans are eating well these days with services like Shudder and Scream Box catering catalogs of terror — but how are consumers supposed to stay on top of every little gem? Something like Joseph and Vanessa Winter's "Deadstream" deserves all the attention in the world, which you can watch for a monthly Shudder subscription that amounts to pocket change. To make sure "Deadstream" doesn't get lost in the Halloween shuffle, it's my selection this week — take the hint!
I've already given y'all a full review out of SXSW for "Deadstream," which took the Midnight category by storm.

There’s a certain charm to the V/H/S franchise that I have never quite been able to put my finger on… until now. It’s that retro-style feel blended with the chilling horror elements that culminates in it feeling like both a warm hug and a rush of blood at the same time.

Plot: Five terrifying tales are unearthed on a VHS tape that hasn’t been watched since 1999.
Review: Like all anthology films, V/H/S/99 is a mixed bag. It contains five separate stories, and as in every movie in this franchise, some are great, and some are mediocre. However, to the movie’s credit, none of the stories are bad, meaning that V/H/S/99 adds up to a pretty solid addition to the franchise.
Two of the stories are brilliant. My favorite, by a long shot, is the second one, Suicide Bid, written and directed by Johannes Roberts, who did 47 Meters Down and Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City. In it, Ally Ioannides plays a sorority pledge eager to be liked. Her would-be sisters decide to play a prank on her, burying her alive in a coffin, only to abandon her when cops show up, intending to return later to dig her up.

Directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter made something special with "Deadstream," a thrilling and hilarious Pov horror film about a disgraced YouTuber desperately attempting to win back his audience by pulling the most ridiculous stunt imaginable. Joseph Winter stars as the fictional Shawn Ruddy, an insufferable online personality armed with all of the hot new technological gadgets viewers assume (and often demand) all creators utilize, who breaks into a notorious haunted house called Death Manor to livestream his overnight stay.
As this is a film starring a YouTuber-turned-streamer, Ruddy does just about everything a horror movie has taught us not to do in a haunted house, including destroying sacred items, performing a seance, reading Latin out loud, and talking wicked smack about the ghostly inhabitants as a means to keep his viewers interested. The comparisons to "The Evil Dead" and "Hell House LLC" are easy to make and not inaccurate, but...

An out-of-favour celebrity seeks to win back viewers by filming his visit to a haunted house in well-judged mix of jokes and jump scares
This comic horror romp has no pretensions and seeks only to goof around and dole out a few jump scares, but in its own sly way it offers a Gen Z version of The Blair Witch Project. Just as that 1999 film showed hipster film-makers stumbling around an evil woodland, their handheld supposed “found” footage forming the film itself, this pretends to be a feed on a Twitch-like platform livestreaming the latest escapade of Shawn Ruddy (played by co-director Joseph Winter).
Shawn’s public persona is built around his foolhardy, faux-naif willingness to take stupid risks, but a recent stunt that went too far has cost him his sponsors. After making the obligatory apology video (there’s a lot of references to other shamed internet personalities...

Deadstream sees co-director Joseph Winter star as disgraced YouTube celebrity Shawn Ruddy, who will do anything to reclaim his influencer infamy. So he locks himself inside the reportedly haunted Death Manor that once belonged to lovesick 1800s poet Mildred Pratt. As Shawn breaks every horror movie rule for follower spikes, he accidentally angers a vengeful spirit and his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.
The Winters, Joseph and Vanessa, get the entire YouTube/streamer personality schtick Perfect… From the over the top behaviour, the constant plugging of merch, the no-shame attitude, and the fake and shallow nature of influencer culture, everything about Deadstream‘s protagonist Shawn is Incredibly on the nose – even down to the fawning “apology” he makes to his audience following behaviour that got him cancelled.

"Coming to you live from - Death Manor!" Get ready to scream!! Shudder has revealed an official trailer for an indie found footage horror film titled Deadstream, which will be out on Shudder for streaming at the start of October. This first premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and it has also played at the Neuchâtel Film Festival and Fantasy Filmfest, with a stop at the Sitges Film Festival as well. In this audacious box of horrors, an internet personality tries to win back followers by livestreaming himself in a haunted house. Described as a "hilarious and bloody tribute to classics like Evil Dead 2 and The Blair Witch Project." Starring Joseph Winter and Melanie Stone, plus a bunch of nasty monsters. Reviews say it has "an impressive consistency to the way the filmmakers bounce this man who's used to living online around an unimaginably real nightmare.

The odds are not good for “V/H/S” — which is to say it’s the even-numbered entries in this horror omnibus franchise that have been by far the best to date. As No. 5, “V/H/S/99” unfortunately maintains that pattern, providing an uninspired extension of the series that had rebounded after a seven-year lull with last fall’s “V/H/S/94.”
That installment was typically uneven, but the better segments were terrific. Here, nothing stands out: The best episodes are merely good enough, and the worst just tiresome. Nonetheless, this brand has proven viewer appeal for genre streaming platform Shudder, where it should do well when launched in various territories on Oct. 20. Set in 1999 — the tail of the titular format’s commercial reign, since DVDs were introduced two years prior — the film is unlikely to be the series’ last.
If this “V/H/S” has any binding theme, it would appear to be bullying. All...

When “The Blair Witch Project” got the found-footage horror subgenre properly started in 1999, it was already asking for trouble that the protagonists were film students pointing their cameras where they shouldn’t. These days, prospective victims in such movies are likely to make us feel they deserve their fate by being professional self-promoters with such widely despised job titles as “influencer,” “YouTube personality” or “reality TV star.” Sharp objects may also be involved, but in horror cinema, few things prove more reliably fatal than narcissism.
So we know the goose of bearded thirtysomething Shawn Ruddy (Joseph Winter) is cooked right away in “Deadstream,” because he’s introduced in a bombastic montage of clips from the streaming series of which he’s the star and entire crew. He self-identifies as “the world’s biggest wuss — facing my fears one dumb-ass challenge at a time.” The latest such fear: a solo overnight...

To some, Melanie Stone may be a newcomer, but the truth is that she’s already gotten a decade of on screen experience. Like most actors, she started with small roles but eventually worked her way to bigger opportunities. She is most we–known for playing Marek in the Mythica film series. Although the series has completed its final installment, Melanie has a lot more great work where that came from. She’s done two film projects in 2020 and she has several more in the works. If you’re a fan of Melanie’s work, you’ve got a lot of things to look forward

Clare Niederpruem’s adaptation of “Little Women” is billed as “the first-ever modern cinematic retelling of the classic story.” (Apparently they’re not counting the 2012 TV movie “The March Sisters at Christmas.”) This sounds like a promising approach; Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel was published 150 years ago, yet it remains as relevant as ever.
Alcott’s books grappled with the place of girls and women (and also boys and men) in the world, so there will always be room for thoughtful adaptations of her work. Indeed, this year brought a well-received miniseries to PBS, and Greta Gerwig is currently working on an interpretation starring Saoirse Ronan and Meryl Streep. Plus, of course, parents still show kids their own favorite versions, from 1933, 1949 and 1994.
But these efforts reflected a crucial understanding missing from Niederpruem’s feature debut: that we are all Jo. The girls in this contemporary retelling — which was produced...

What would the world of the March sisters look like in the contemporary era? Such is the concept behind Clare Niederpruem’s misguided take on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel “Little Women.” Released between last year’s well-received three-episode PBS miniseries and Greta Gerwig’s upcoming star-studded feature, Niederpruem’s debut will be remembered as a curiosity amongst otherwise stellar adaptations. Niederpruem, who adapted the book with Kristi Shimek, clearly has great affection for Alcott’s indelible sisters, but her film never goes beyond placing them in a contemporary setting and simply hoping for the best.
While there’s certainly room to explore Alcott’s biggest themes in the lives of modern women, here the results feel more hammy than revelatory. Sweet scenes in Alcott’s book are now suddenly weird and outdated, and only serve as uncomfortable evidence of the film’s poor execution. The intrusion of modern idioms also stings,...

When characters cry on screen, but the audience doesn’t cry in their seats, there’s a problem. Unfortunately, it’s not the only problem in director Clare Niederpruem’s “Little Women.” This contemporary adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s enduring classic is certainly admirable in its attempt to give the material a modern spin. However, what’s new only serves to frustrate and detract from the reasons why this material has been beloved for generations.
Niederpruem, along with co-writer (and editor) Kristi Shimek, updates Alcott’s source material with an unnecessary framing device in which present-day twentysomething Jo March (Sarah Davenport) is attempting to make her mark by writing an unforgettable novel. Can you guess what that novel will eventually be?
Jo was once a young girl yearning to “do all the things”, such as travel the world and be a playwright. Now, she’s just a frustrated fantasy-fiction writer,...

Tagline: “Hell Hath No Fury Like a Demon Scorned.” Monarch Home Entertainment will release Steve Shimek's Nocturne next week. The film will be available on DVD. In the film, several friends gather for a night of fun. A ritual changes the tone, once a demonic spirit appears. Now, characters struggle to just survive. Nocturne stars: Clare Niederpruem (The Maze), Darien Willardson (Storm Rider) Melanie Stone, Colton Tran and Jake Stormoen. The film's official DVD artwork is here, along with the official release trailer. The artwork shows more of the film's supernatural element. A cross holds back the demon, which looks made of flame. The tagline: "hell hath no fury like a demon scorned" hints at the conflict, within the film. And, one character looks beleaguered as night closes in. Nocturne will be available at most DVD retailers. On July 25th, the film will be available at Amazon. This title...
