Can a bad twist ruin a good movie? Can a good twist save a flawed film? Are both possible? These are the sorts of things that run through your head when watching a flick that’s overly reliant on a third act surprise. Inheritance, out today, certainly thinks it’s being more clever than it actually is, but it’s a case where that poor choice doesn’t torpedo the whole thing. A chillingly ominous vibe and a standout turn by Simon Pegg, acting very much against type, helps to make this one worth your time. Plus, if the twist manages to surprise you? All the better. The film is a mystery and a thriller, wrapped up in a bit of melodrama, to boot. Lauren Monroe (Lily Collins) is an ambitious young District Attorney in New York. The daughter of the wealthy and powerful Archer Monroe (Patrick Warburton), Lauren has...

After seeing his work on 2018’s Terminal, this writer jumped at the opportunity to speak with filmmaker Vaughn Stein about his latest project, Inheritance, a dramatic thriller centered around the Monroe dynasty—a wealthy family whose influence in politics and legacy in New York is built upon a foundation of lies. Those lies begin to threaten their very existences after the patriarch of their clan (Patrick Warburton) passes away suddenly, leaving his daughter Lauren (Lily Collins) to clean up the mess before they lose everything they’ve all worked so hard for over the years.
Written by Matthew Kennedy, Inheritance also stars Connie Nielsen, Chace Crawford, and Simon Pegg (who turns in an exemplary performance here unlike anything we’ve ever seen from him before). Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Stein about his involvement with Inheritance and why this project immediately caught his attention. He also...

Sins of the Father: Stein Mines Elitism in Absurd Melodrama
“Does any daughter every really know her father?” is one of several wilting lines of dialogue in Inheritance which could have served as a double-sided tagline. The sophomore feature from director Vaughn Stein written by first time scribe Matthew Kennedy is a soap opera balanced on the troubled dynasty of wealthy family, whose demise seems imminent after the unexpected death of a tyrannical patriarch.
An interesting array of notable names, several of whom are glaringly miscast, enhances the campy qualities of this over-baked yarn which features a few too many turns of the screw which are neither surprising nor compelling.…...

One adjective you don’t hear much anymore is “preposterous,” defined as “contrary to nature, reason or common sense.” Yet the word applies perfectly to Inheritance, a blithering botch job of a thriller that begs the question: “Come on, are you fucking kidding me?”
The plot, such as it is, involves the last will and testament of Archer Monroe (Patrick Warburton, a.k.a. Seinfeld‘s immortal Puddy), the patriarch of a New York financial dynasty who leaves the bulk of his fortune to his devoted widow Catherine (Connie Nielsen...

Discovering a man held captive in a bunker for 30 years should be more compelling than it proves in “Inheritance.” This overlong tale spends most of its nearly two hours as a somewhat draggy, talky mystery before finally deciding to be a thriller, with credibility lacking throughout. Questionable lead casting further undermines this second directorial feature for Brit Vaughn Stein, which is an improvement on his first — the terribly arch, self-penned neo-noir “Terminal” — but doesn’t find terra much more firma in Matthew Kennedy’s tepid potboiler of a script. The U.S. production launches on home-turf streaming platforms May 22, having debuted on DirectTV in April after its coronavirus-canceled Tribeca Film Festival premiere fell through.
A hyperbolic opening edited too much like a trailer shows tycoon Archer Monroe (Patrick Warburton) staggering to an apparent heart-attack death. Afterward we meet the rest of his family, now gathered for the funeral at their aristocratic “summer house” estate.

For every good choice in Vaughn Stein’s sophomore effort — the director previously helmed the Margot Robbie-starring curiosity “Terminal” — there are at least three more that fall flat, victims of obvious plotting, silly tropes, and shoddy character building. A mostly predictable thriller, “Inheritance” , but patient audiences might be rewarded by its occasionally unnerving final act. Strong work from star Lily Collins, who manages to ride out the film’s oddest missteps, helps, though co-star Simon Pegg is less successful at the big swings required of his character.
The film’s frantic opening goes to great pains to enforce two major plot points: rising district attorney Lauren Monroe (Collins) is driven by her desire to help victims, but her wealthy family isn’t nearly as compelled to look out for the little guy. Lauren is in the midst of literally delivering the key points of her ethos (she’ll never...

Simple questions rarely have simple answers. Take the one that’s posed to Lauren Monroe (Lily Collins) upon the death of her father Archer (Patrick Warburton): Are you loyal to your family or justice? Most would probably say both since they have it in their minds that their family is on justice’s side. Despite her desire to be one, however, Lauren isn’t that person. She partly worked to become District Attorney precisely because her family’s name was more aligned with money and murky morality than lawful practices. Archer unsurprisingly scoffed when she chose to go into civil law, knowing her considerable talents would better suit his interests in the private sector defending his friends. So now he’s posthumously supplying her one last chance to select family instead.

Add Simon Pegg to the list of actors who’ve undergone radical transformations for a role.
The British comedian surprised fans this weekend when he showed off his extreme weight loss and muscle gain for the upcoming film, Inheritance.
His personal trainer Nick Lower originally shared the photo on Friday and included the caption: “Simon Pegg 6 month body transformation for ‘Inheritance’ Movie. The brief for this role was lean, Very lean. It required a specific body shape & look.”
Pegg, 49, retweeted the photo and added a comment saying achieving his new look caused “occasional mild grumpiness.”
