Andrew Scott, Nicole Scherzinger and writer Jack Thorne were among the winners at last night’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards in London.
Scott’s performance in Vanya landed him a second Best Actor Awards after his 2019 win for Present Laughter. The play, billed as a “radical new version of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya,” saw Scott portray numerous characters. It ran at the Duke of York’s Theatre.
The Sherlock actor wasn’t on hand to collect his prize, so Jenna Coleman, who announced his win, collected it on his behalf.
Former Pussycat Doll singer and reality TV judge Scherzinger took home Best Musical Performance for her role in Sunset Boulevard, which began in September at the Savoy Theatre. The play also landed a Best Director win for Jamie Lloyd.

Imagine a Knives Out mystery playing it straight-faced, with a Gen Z tech whiz and citizen detective as the hero, and you might end up with something like the FX-produced A Murder at the End of the World, a stylish seven-part whodunit set in exotic and eerie Iceland. Into this frigid and forbidding tundra arrives celebrated young true-crime author Darby Hart (The Crown‘s captivating Emma Corrin with punkish pink hair), mysteriously summoned by the inscrutable Steve Jobs-like “king of tech” billionaire Andy Ronson (Clive Owen in heavy-framed glasses). She joins a global conference of change-the-world visionaries at a remote and super-smart (as in AI) hotel. Overwhelmed by the refined company she’s suddenly keeping, Darby shifts into amateur Sherlock mode when bodies start falling. Cowriter-director Brit Marling, who co-stars as Ronson’s alluring wife Lee, a legendary coder who went off the grid to escape trolls, can...

November on Netflix is peppered with curiosities for just about everyone. This month will see the long-awaited adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s award-winning novel All the Light We Cannot See hit the streamer. Directed by Shawn Levy (The Adam Project) and starring Mark Ruffalo, the limited series will tell the emotional story of a blind French girl who meets a German soldier in the final days of WWII.
Elsewhere, Netflix will unveil its first expansion of its planned Squid Game universe with an actual competition show that will challenge 456 players to be the final winner of no less than $4.56 million. Squid Game: The Challenge will feature games recreated from the hit 2021 show, hopefully with a comparatively zero chance of death for the contestants!

A scene from Episode 1 of German/Austrian crime drama “Pagan Peak: Season 3.” Courtesy of Topic.
The German/Austrian crime drama “Pagan Peak” is back for its third and final season, but it is fairly essential to understanding this final round to have seen the first two seasons, due to the substantial carryover of main characters and key issues shaping their current actions and attitudes. To help out, here is the link to my earlier review of “Pagan Peak”:
“Pagan Peak,” Season 2 – TV series review
Once you read the review (or watch Seasons 1 and 2), you’ll be caught up. Now that you’re up to speed, be prepared for a radical tone shift from a suspenseful dark procedural into something much creepier. More Lovecraft and Lynch than Dalgleish or Sherlock in this final season.
The drastic change caused me to check the creators’ credits. Sure enough there was a...

Warning: contains spoilers for Ghosts series 5.
Ghosts very nearly had a musical episode. The creators of the BBC comedy talked about it for a long time, says Larry Rickard, co-writer and the man behind the show’s caveman ghost Robin and headless Humphrey. The gang knew they wanted to do a deeply earnest love song, but couldn’t quite make the idea mesh.
“At one point we had a full day on it, but it felt like whichever direction we tried taking the story in to justify the conceit, we ended up at odds with each other over how the plot would then work around it, and how you would justify the songs being there without it feeling like it was a different show. You reach an event horizon of trying so hard to make it work that you realise this isn’t natural and this isn’t us.”

In 2014 and 2015, Vertigo published Si Spencer’s eight-issue graphic novel Bodies, a mind-bending mystery about four police officers from different historical eras who discover the same corpse in the same London location, decades apart. Featuring detectives from the present day, the 1940s, the 1890s and 2053, it’s a complex conspiracy thriller about a very dark future. Originally illustrated by four artists – Dean Ormston, Phil Winslade, Meghan Hetrick and Tula Lotay – each era had its own distinct feel and look.
Spencer, who had also written on other Vertigo titles including Judge Dredd and Books of Magick: Life During Wartime, sadly passed away in February 2021, meaning he wasn’t able to see Paul Tomalin’s eight-part Netflix series adapted from his work. It’s out now, with a sprawling cast of characters including Boiling Point and This Is England’s Stephen Graham, several established actors and a handful of newcomers. Here’s more about them.

The fourth episode of The Irrational is out now, and it features yet another interesting case for Alec Mercer to solve. In this episode, we get to see more of Wes Banning as well, who is the only suspect the FBI has in the church bombing case. Mercer was knee-deep in responsibilities, so he delegated a few of them, like teaching his class and grading his students, to Rizwan. While Mercer solved the new case, he picked up on an interesting phenomenon of human psychology known as the “zero-sum bias,” which became pivotal in understanding the case. The show becomes Sherlock-esque in nature, becoming reluctant to depart from the overused deduction skills, but overall, the performances and fast-paced writing keep the show afloat. Here is a recap of The Irrational Episode 4.

Be sure to lock your doors when you get home this Halloween, for a sinister, unearthly presence willing be walking the streets this All Hallow’s Eve.
We don’t mean actual ghosts, obviously, we’re talking about all those precocious costumed youths in shoddily applied face paint having the audacity to knock on your door demanding some of the multipack of snack-size sweets you got from Tesco on the way home from work. Bought them for trick-or-treaters? Pffft. Those Haribo were all for you, and you know it.
So embrace the darkness (and the sugar), draw the curtains, and shut out the world ready to scare yourself silly with these classic British TV ghost stories.
Whistle and I’ll Come to You (1968)
A classic in the ghost story genre, this deeply atmospheric and unnerving production is Jonathan Miller’s adaptation of the 1904 M. R. James tale “Oh Whistle, and I’ll Come to You,...

It cannot be that one is not familiar with characters like Cinderella or Little Red Riding Hood. They have a special place in the cultural consciousness as they are characters from world-famous fairy tales. Now, a fairy tale may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but a good murder mystery is something else. Yûichi Fukuda’s Once Upon a Crime, is a whodunit spin on the fairytale universe. It’s quite an intriguing idea, and with Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood as the main characters, it becomes all the more fascinating. The story begins with the story of Little Red Riding Hood, where we see the titular character going on her adventures. This tale is known to everyone, but the twist comes when she meets Cinderella on the way and tries to get her to go to the famous ball where she will meet her ‘prince charming.’ The...

John Wick Chapter 4 pushed the envelope on stunt performance with the many flinging of bodies every which way. Extraction 2 boldly showed a visceral prison yard riot fight sequence in a one-shot. Tom Cruise did his thing and collaborated with many more brave souls participating in his death-defying stunts in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. This year saw many accomplishments in the popular genre of action and it seems as though the public are giving the hard-working stunt people behind the scenes more and more deserved recognition.
Bullet Train‘s David Leitch and Kelly McCormick are big names in the stunt community, and they join the likes of Chad Stahelski, Sam Hargrave and countless others in elevating the action genre to new heights. According to Variety, Leitch and his producing partner spouse, Kelly McCormick, are working with Universal Pictures Content Group for a new series centered on Hollywood stunt performers to be titled Action.

In 1956, Elvis Presley appeared on The Steve Allen Show and sang to a basset hound. Allen was visibly delighted by the situation, but Elvis didn’t seem as keen. He was stiff and uncomfortable, but, as a people pleaser, he agreed to the spectacle. He would later go on to describe it as the most embarrassing moment of his career.

Ahead of Elvis’ performance on The Steve Allen Show, Elvis met Sherlock, a basset hound wearing a bow tie and top hat. In a rehearsal, Sherlock ignored him entirely, and Allen encouraged him to “get to know” her.
