Jake Gyllenhaal hosted “Saturday Night Live” last night and the show’s most memorable sketch saw Gyllenhaal playing an iconic pop culture character: Fred from “Scooby-Doo.”
It was titled “Scooby-Doo and the Mystery of the Shadow Phantom,” with Gyllenhaal starring alongside musical guest Sabrina Carpenter as well as “SNL” cast members Sarah Sherman, Mikey Day, and Andrew Dismukes. While it starts like a traditional “Scooby” adventure, with the gang unmasking a mystery, it soon turns into a rated “R” bloodbath.
After Fred reveals the Phantom to be Old Man Franklin, he takes things a step too far and literally rips Old Man Franklin’s face clean off. From there, the Mystery Inc. gang is dispatched in increasingly gruesome ways, while Scoob chows down on the Old Man’s face.
The gore effects are largely digital, but we’ll let it slide.

Halle Berry‘s movie The Mothership is sadly not going to see the light of day!
It was just revealed that the sci-fi adventure movie has been scrapped by Netflix, over a year after it finished filming.
Halle was set to star as Sara Morse in the film, and she was serving as an executive producer.
Keep reading to find out more…
Filming on the movie started in July 2021 and wrapped later that year. Now, Variety reports that post-production delays have contributed to the cancelation of the movie.
The movie was to “take place one year after the husband of Berry’s character mysteriously vanishes from their rural farm. Now a single mother, Sara Morse and her children discover an extraterrestrial object underneath their home. It (hopefully) leads them to discover the truth about the patriarch’s disappearance.”
Molly Parker and Omari Hardwick also starred. Halle was even seen on...

Warner Bros Discovery is circling a possible merger with Paramount – but that’d put its CEO, David Zaslav, in charge of two studios. Sigh.
I’ve never met David Zaslav.
For all I know, the CEO of Warner Bros Discovery may be a lovely, caring man. He may spend his evenings devouring movies, checking on the wellbeing of his staff, and adopting puppies. I hope that’s the case.
This piece isn’t about the personal side of the man. There’s too much of that out there in entertainment reporting, and I want no part of it.
Almost as much as, on a professional level, I want David Zaslav to have no part at all of Paramount Pictures. I think he’s become a totem for much that’s wrong with modern movie studios.
News broke overnight that David Zaslav has had a discussion with his opposite number at Paramount,...

A new report spills a few details on the ongoing moves behind the scenes as Warner Bros hovers its finger threateningly over Coyote Vs Acme’s ‘delete button’.
A couple of weeks ago, we covered the widely-circulated story that Warner Bros’ Coyote vs. Acme may have avoided the same sad fate as Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt .
By ‘sad fate’ of course, we mean the tireless work of lots of creative people getting deleted by Warner Bros as part of a tax write-off. When the studio announced it would be doing the same thing again with its live action/animation hybrid project, Coyote vs. Acme, things swiftly tuned ugly, at least according to accounts that you’ve likely seen in the trades.
Filmmakers across the board reportedly cancelled scheduled meetings with Warner Bros and one unnamed filmmaker told Deadline: “We have a project over at Warners in development. We’re...

Warner Bros might finally be learning to undelete films following its Coyote Vs Acme debacle: now it should revisit its disastrous cull of Batgirl and Scoob! 2.
It’s been a difficult week for Warner Bros Discovery, in a year that’s not been shy of them. Not that filmmakers and film fans are offering much sympathy for the company, which is in danger of making a habit of canning completed films.
The story so far.
Following its 2022 decision to scrap both Batgirl and Scoob! 2: The Holiday Haunt, a pair of pretty much completed movies that collectively had cost over $120m to make, it threw the anvil last week on Coyote Vs Acme.
As film critic Robbie Collin wrote on whatever Twitter’s called now, “Why would anyone work for a studio that makes a habit of this?”
And that’s the problem. Doing it once? A nasty one-off. Twice?...

The shelved Coyote vs Acme film may see the light of day after all. Amid industry outcry that WB was shelving yet another film, the studio has begun screening the movie for streaming services. Deadline reports that Prime Video seems to be the frontrunner as far as acquiring the movie goes. The shelving of the completed film has spurred lots of anger within the industry, as unlike the previously shelved Batgirl or Scoob’s Holiday Haunt, Coyote Vs Acme was complete and scheduled for a theatrical release.
Not only that, but reports suggest that the film was testing very well, with composer Steven Price roasting the company on Twitter for their “bizarre anti-art studio shenanigans.”

With Road Runner-like speed, Warner Bros. Discovery has reversed its decision to bury Coyote vs. Acme.
The studio will now allow director Dave Green to shop his live-action/animation hybrid movie to other potential buyers instead of shelving the project for a tax write-off, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Amazon is said to be a contender, with screenings for potential buyers taking place this month. Puck was first to report the news of the reversal.
The move comes days after the The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Coyote vs. Acme would become Warners third already-shot film to get shelved after previously nixing nearly completed projects Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt in August 2022.
After Batgirl and Scoob! were dumped, a group of filmmakers with business at the studio started a text chain — a support group of sorts — to share their hopes and their anxieties, as well as encouragement and tips for navigating the studio.

Last week, filmmakers, critics and movie fans showed a rare, completely united front in castigating the move by Warner Bros. to lock another of its projects away in a vault, preferring to take a tax write-down instead of releasing it, as with Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt last year. The new movie was Coyote Vs. Acme, which blends CG Wile E. Coyote with live-action John Cena and more. Now, after the outcry, Puck brings word that executives are reportedly changing their minds and allowing the movie's producers to shop it elsewhere.

"Color me: intrigued" Sony Pictures has unveiled the first look teaser trailer for the next upcoming Garfield movie, currently set to arrive in theaters in May of 2024 next summer. "Monday just got a whole lot better." The Garfield Movie, as it is officially called, is directed by Mark Dindal, the animation filmmaker who also directed The Emperor's New Groove and Chicken Little. The funky plot features Garfield reuniting with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat, then ending up involved in a high-stakes heist. The film stars Chris Pratt as the voice of the sarcastic, lasagna-loving tabby, alongside the voices of Samuel L. Jackson as his father Vic, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, and Ving Rhames. This is a fun intro, similar to the recent Scooby Doo movie where they show Scoob as a pup, this time starting with Garfield as a kitten living...

Coyote vs. Acme composer Steven Price has blasted the David Zaslav cost-cutting Warner Bros Discovery administration for axing the Looney Tunes hybrid live-action animated film.
Price, who won an original score Oscar for Warner Bros. tentpole Gravity in 2014 took to X to say “Had a lot of fun scoring Coyote Vs Acme. As no-one will be able to hear it now, due to bizarre anti-art studio financial shenanigans I will never understand, here is a bit of behind the scenes footage of our “Meep Meep” Roadrunner choir, with apologies to Tchaikovsky…”

The financial axe of Warner Bros. has fallen on another film. Following in the shelved footsteps of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt last year, the studio has decided to put another film — this one finished and ready to release — into its vault. The latest victim of the baffling, if monetarily lucrative procedure is Coyote Vs. Acme, which stars John Cena.

A little over a year after the shelving of Batgirl sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood, Warner Bros. is putting another of its films in the studio vault.
Warners no longer plans to release Coyote vs. Acme, a live-action, CG animation hybrid that completed principal photography last year in New Mexico. The move follows veteran animation executive Bill Damaschke taking over Warner Animation Group earlier this year.
“For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of al time,” filmmaker Dave Green wrote on X after this story initially published. “I was surrounded by a brilliant team, who poured their souls into this project. … Along the ride, we were embraced by test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores.”
The feature, which sources believe cost around $72 million to make, had key Warners talent involved in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

There are only two certainties in this world; death and that "Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island" is the best Scooby-Doo movie ever made. Scooby and the gang first debuted in 1969, but it wasn't until 1998 that "Zombie Island" set the standard for all things Scoob. It's scary, the animation is stunning, the voice-acting is top-notch, and every subsequent Scooby story has been chasing that high ever since. /Film's own Valerie Ettenhofer recently solidified her place as an expert on all things Mystery Incorporated with their oral history of the film and uncovered some production mysteries in the process.
Model Coordinator Lance Falk was interviewed as part of the piece and told Ettenhofer that "The Twilight Zone" was a major influence on not just the tone of the film, but also the structure. Lest we forget, most episodes of "Scooby-Doo" are roughly 20 minutes, which has an entirely different storytelling structure than that of a feature-length film.

Michael Kurinsky was supposed to make his directorial debut alongside co-director Bill Haller with “Scoob! Holiday Haunt.” That is, until the film — starring Iain Armitage, Mark Hamill, Cristo Fernández, Ming Na-Wen and Frank Welker — was abruptly pulled from release by Warner Bros. Discovery on Aug. 2, terminating Kurinsky’s two years of work on the film.
Three months later, the film is completely finished — but it seems unlikely any Scoobaphiles will get to see it.

It’s been a long wait — nearly a decade, in fact — since Dwayne Johnson first signed on to become an integral part of the DC universe. He’s recently turned 50 (not that he looks it). But now, at last, he’s launched a big-league entry in the cinematic superpowers world with Black Adam.
This is a gigantic, 200 million sci-fi extravaganza that likely features a higher percentage of screen time devoted strictly to massive action and effects over dialogue than any of its comics-derived predecessors. Given the quality of the dialogue here, this is all to the good, but it certainly won’t deter the devoted fanboys who have been waiting a long time for this one. The large intended audience will no doubt gobble up this extravagantly boisterous other-worldly space circus, which certainly deserves to be seen on the big screen. There it will play for 45 days before beginning to stream on HBO Max.

‘Scoob! Holiday Haunt’ Filmmakers Opt to Record the Movie’s Score… After It’s Killed by Warner Bros.
“Batgirl” wasn’t the only nearly completed Warner Bros. film that was killed last week, but in the case of the animated sequel “Scoob! Holiday Haunt,” the film’s producer and co-writer opted to continue working on the film even after it was canceled.
Both “Batgirl” and “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” were effectively killed last week by Warner Bros. Discovery, which now has no plans to release either film in theaters or on HBO Max despite the fact that both were nearly completed. But “Scoob! 2” co-writer and producer Tony Cervone found himself in a unique position – the stage and musicians had already been paid to record the score for the movie. So when that date came after “Scoob! 2” was canceled, Cervone decided to have the musicians record the score – written by Dara Taylor – anyway.

David Zaslav Talks DC “Ten Year Plan” In Wake of ‘Batgirl’ Axing; ‘Flash’ Still On Track For Release
“We’re not going to launch a movie until it’s ready.”
That was pretty much Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s answer when asked about the recent scrapping of Batgirl during an investor Q&a on the company’s Q2 call.
While he didn’t specifically address the details of the latest Batgirl imbroglio, which greatly upset many talent reps in town, Zaslav emphasized his commitment to building a 10-year plan for DC a la what former Disney boss Bob Iger and Marvel president Kevin Feige have built.
“Our ambition to is bring Warners back and produce great, high-quality films,” the CEO said. “We can build a long-term sustainable growth business out of DC. We’re not releasing a film before it’s ready.”
He added, “The focus is to make these films as good as possible.”

In a complete about-face from the business strategy employed by former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav made it firm today that the new merged entertainment conglomerate “will fully embrace theatrical.” Period.
“We have a different view on the wisdom of releasing direct-to-streaming films, and we have taken some aggressive steps to course-correct the previous strategy,” Zaslav said about on the previous 2021 pandemic model that was implemented to spike HBO Max subs.
David Zaslav Talks DC Reset In Wake of ‘Batgirl’ Axing
The CEO expressed his belief in the theatrical window business model today on the conglom’s Q2 earnings call.
No theatrical day-and-date experimentation with the HBO Max streaming service, nada. And as we’ve seen recently, Zaslav has gone to great lengths to course-correct the previous administration’s production plan to make movies straight for the streaming service, pulling the plug on the 70M Batgirl,...

Leslie Grace, the star of Warner Bros' shelved Batgirl movie, is speaking out the fact the movie will never see the light of day.
“Querida familia! On the heels of the recent news about our movie Batgirl, I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland,” Grace wrote on Instagram.
“I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process."
"To every Batgirl fan – Thank You for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, ‘my own damn hero!’ Batgirl for life!”

The directors of Warner Bros.' Batgirl movie are speaking out about the controversial decision from the media conglomerate to axe it.
“We are saddened and shocked by the news,” reads a joint statement from the pair posted on social media.
“We still can’t believe it."
"As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences, and while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves."
"Maybe one day they will insha’Allah.”
“Our amazing cast and crew did a tremendous job and worked so hard to bring Batgirl to life," the pair added of those who worked on the production.
"We are forever grateful to have been part of that team. It was a dream to work with such fantastic actors like Michael Keaton, Jk Simmons, Brendan Fraser,...

The Batgirl movie was canceled, but why? It’s all business for Warner Bros. Discovery. It may have gotten lost in all the Batgirl controversy, but the next Scooby Doo movie was also shelved eternally.
“Warner Bros. has finally made a statement about the permanent cancellation of two multi-million dollar projects, Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt. Essentially, according to Deadline, the decision comes from a desire to re-energize the DC Extended Universe, and some of the character reveals and plot points in Batgirl didn’t line up with the larger theatrical strategy for the comics franchise.”

Why did Warner Bros scrap Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt?
The cancellation by Warner Bros of two made-for-hbo Max streaming movies came as a shock to the town. There are several threads here, but the move amounts to an emphatic rejection of past WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar’s strategy to make original 70 million live-action and animated films directly for the streaming site.
The makers of the live-action Batgirl and the animated Scoob! learned today that those films were being stopped in their tracks. The timing was particularly awkward for Batgirl co-directors Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah. Both are in Morocco for El Arbi’s wedding — some wedding present — and they expected to return to the cutting room and continue work on the film that stars Leslie Grace, J.K. Simmons, Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton.
There were initial cries that the scrapping of Batgirl carried bad optics because the title...

Warner Bros. Discovery will not release “Batgirl,” either theatrically or on HBO Max, TheWrap has learned. The 90 million project is effectively dead.
“The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future,” according to Warner Bros. Picture Spokesperson.
Made under a previous regime, “Batgirl” was initially designed to be an HBO Max release, and then was being considered for theatrical distribution. Due to Covid issues and shutdowns, the budget ballooned to 90 million.
The movie stars “In the Heights” breakout star Leslie Grace in the title role of Barbara Gordon.

Odd though it seems in a time when film production has ceased, cinemas are empty and actors are trapped in the confines of their own home, new movies are still trickling out. Last week, we saw Capone and Scoob! make their on-demand debuts and in 6 weeks’ time, a new Mel Gibson action flick will be making a similar entrance.
Force of Nature, also starring Kate Bosworth and Emile Hirsch, is having its direct-to-video release on June 30th. There’s even a trailer to go with it, which you can check out up above. After a bit of digging, it seems there’s also a synopsis for those who need a little more convincing, and it reads as so:
“A gang of thieves plan a heist during a hurricane and encounter trouble when a cop tries to force everyone in the building to evacuate.”
So, it’s Geostorm meets Die Hard.

In “Scoob,” which hit video-on-demand on Friday, Will Forte’s Shaggy belts a stellar rendition of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow” with his four-legged pal Scooby-Doo. It turns out that Forte has been rehearsing for it all his life… because that’s his go-to song at karaoke with Jason Sudeikis.

Chicago – It was inevitable that the iconic cartoon character Scooby Doo would get the modern animation treatment, and the new film “Scoob!” opens May 15th, 2020 on VOD platforms. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, reviewed the film during the Eddie Volkman Show.

“Scooby Doo, Where Are You?” was a Saturday Morning Cartoon in the era of three network television, and premiered in 1969. Since then, it’s become a major franchise for the Hanna Barbera animation house, and has had more variations than the Marvel universe. “Scoobs!” Is a revival of the main characters, the dog named Scooby Doo (voice of Frank Welker) and his gang of mystery solvers … including Fred (Zac Efron), Daphne (Amanda Seyfried), Velma (Gina Rodriguez) and Scoob’s best friend Shaggy (Will Forte).

The new CGI Scooby-Doo movie Scoob! will feature an origin story of how the world’s most famous Great Dane first met his human companions and formed investigatory outfit Mystery Inc. And in between posting images and gifs from the film, its official Twitter account has now referenced the Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme.
First, though, you might well need some context for this one. Ultra Instinct stems from action anime series Dragon Ball Super, a sequel to the long-running Dragon Ball Z. In it, saga protagonist Goku gains the named ability, allowing him to fight independent of conscious thought and react at a speed bordering on precognition.
Its application to Shaggy came about after Dtv animated film Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur, which sees him beat up a gang of bikers after being hypnotized to remove his trademark cowardice, a clip of which was edited to mimic Goku’s transformation into the overpowered state.

Seth Meyers has investigated the ongoing college admissions fraud scandal, and he identified the real criminal behind it all: cartoon detective/dog Scooby-Doo.
Ok, not really. But on Wednesday’s episode of “Late Night,” Meyers was pretty amazed by an email federal prosecutors say actress Felicity Huffman wrote that used what is probably Scoob’s most famous catch phrase.
Huffman was among 48 individuals charged on Tuesday with committing fraud to get their children into top universities, including fixing Sat results by arranging a test proctor who would change incorrect answers, according to charging documents. She was arrested Tuesday morning and her bail was set at $250,000. Huffman has not responded to a request for comment from TheWrap, and she has not commented publicly on the matter.
