Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, sales agents and distributors are convening in Santa Monica this week in the hopes of reconnecting with buyers and kicking off deal discussions at the American Film Market.
After an underwhelming Toronto Film Festival, which saw little deal activity, there’s hope that a few of the starry packages being shopped at AFM will get picked up. But given the climate in Hollywood, many projects won’t officially hit the market until February at the European Film Market in Berlin. The marketplace is not only strained by the strike but the shifting appetites and belt-tightening at the major studios and streamers. At the same time, the return of buyers from China to AFM after several years away is seen as a positive sign.

Oscar Wilde is known as one of the greatest wits in literary history. But he has brought some delightful eeriness, too, with works like The Picture of Dorian Gray and more. This month, one of his finest combinations of the two, the 1887 short story “The Canterville Ghost”, will arrive in animated form on the big screen. Now, we have a clip from The Canterville Ghost courtesy of Blue Fox Entertainment and Shout! Studios that, like the movie itself, is aimed at the whole family.
In the clip, host Hiram Otis (David Harewood) shows off “the new wonder of the modern world” – electricity – to his dazzled guests, only to be pranked by those channeling the spirit of Sir Simon de Canterville (Stephen Fry), who soon commandeers the spook….

Oscar Wilde’s short story is the basis for this energetic family cartoon, with a spirited ghost voiced by Stephen Fry and a brief visit from confrere Hugh Laurie
Here is a sprightly and good-natured pre-Halloween animation, based on the 1887 short story by Oscar Wilde; in vocal terms it reunites Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, though not for a double-act exactly – and it should be said right away that Laurie really isn’t in it much.
At the end of the 19th century, wealthy American Hiram Otis (David Harewood) and his family take possession of an English stately home: Canterville Chase, hoping to install a new-fangled thing called “electricity”. They’ve got it for a bargain price, because all the other owners have been scared away by the resident ghost, Sir Simon Canterville, played with genial aplomb by Fry. He now turns the frighteners on these wretched colonials, only to...

The Corus Entertainment-owned studio is currently focusing on procedurals, half-hour comedies and young adult content after launching last year. On the back of its debut teen series Geek Girl going into production for Netflix and Corus, Head of Waterside Jeff Norton revealed a trio of titles developed with the likes of writer-producers Todd Berger and Julie Dicresce, Arnie Zipursky and Jeff Detsky.
On the procedural front is Serve & Protect, a drama series co-produced with Berger and Dicresce’s December Films, which is best known for Syfy horror comedy Reginald the Vampire. This story about Olivia Cookie in “House of the Dragon” first appeared in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon,” Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower are dueling heroines who ascend to a level of power previously unknown to the female characters in the world created by George R.R. Martin.
They begin the series as best friends, but an unforgivable betrayal brings that sweet relationship to an end: Alicent marries Rhaenyra’s father, King Viserys (Paddy Considine), and becomes queen, a title Rhaenyra had claimed for herself. After a 10-year leap forward, they are played as adults by Emma D’Arcy (as Rhaenyra) and Olivia Cooke (as Alicent) and remain adversaries torn apart by ambition. Their stealth gamesmanship keeps viewers on their toes, wondering how far they will go to gain power.

Emma D’Arcy was feeling like a bit of a cheat. It was July of 2022 at the world premiere of House of the Dragon in Los Angeles. Stylishly dressed in an oversized suit and drop earrings, D’Arcy worked the red carpet like an old pro but never felt completely at ease among the hundreds of eager fans who packed the Academy Museum theater. “It’s like finding yourself in someone else’s life,” recalls the actor, who plays Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO drama that’s based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. “It’s quite wild having never done that before, and certainly not on that scale, obviously, with one of the biggest shows in the world. And I am quite camera shy, which is obviously a disaster.”
But when the lights went down and the Game of Thrones theme music filled the theater, D’Arcy’s anxiety...

Please note, the House of the Dragon screening and panel took place on March 7, 2023.
It’s no secret by now that Ryan Condal knew the pressure he faced when launching House of the Dragon.
While speaking to fans recently for the recent Deadline FYC House + HBO Max Series, the creator of the much-anticipated sequel to Game of Thrones recalled how he became a huge fan of George R.R. Martin’s work after college and how the epic novel series A Song of Ice and Fire taught him how to write.
“Fast forward 20 years and be put in this position to be in charge of the successor to the biggest television show in the history of the universe was a lot to take on,” said Condal, who was joined on stage by Martin and several Hotd castmemembers at the DGA Theater in March.
“And one that won the most Emmys,” quipped the author.

George R.R. Martin is no newcomer to transformation. After “Game of Thrones” revolutionized the fantasy landscape and paved the way for genre series to achieve mainstream acclaim, he and “House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal set their sights on another mighty challenge by crafting a female-centric spin-off.
“If you’re going to make a successful spin-off or sequel, it has to have a reason to exist,” Condal said. “There were great female characters in the original show, but really, other than Cersei, no [woman] really ascends to power the way that both Alicent and Rhaenyra do in their own ways.”
That would be Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), the dueling heroines of HBO’s prequel series that takes place almost 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” Whereas that show featured...

This House of the Dragon article contains spoilers.
In the nearly twenty years that pass in the first season of House of the Dragon, King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) is afflicted by a mysterious illness that causes him to essentially wither away up until his death in episode 8 “The Lord of the Tides.” While the show never explicitly gives the condition a name, due to his symptoms many speculated that Viserys was infected with leprosy – an infectious bacteria that can cause muscle weakness, skin lesions, and painful or tender nerves among other things. In an interview with Variety, Considine seems to confirm this diagnosis saying Viserys’ infection was most likely “a form of leprosy.”
But it wasn’t just a physical illness that plagued Viserys all this time. According to Considine, Viserys’ guilt over losing his wife Aemma (Sian Brooke) contributed to his deteriorating health, saying “How she met her...

Over his two-decade career, Paddy Considine has played cops, ex-cons, priests, architects, struggling actors, union organizers and rock band managers. But when his agent told him that Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik wanted him to play King Viserys I Targaryen in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” he couldn’t quite believe it was real.
“I said, ‘Who’s turned this down?’ Because I’m cynical that way,” he says. “My agent was like, ‘I assure you, they’re just coming to you for it.’”
Part of Considine’s disbelief was due to his feeling that the industry at large had only ever seen him as the working-class striver he made his name playing in the 2000s, in films such as “In America,” “My Summer of Love” and “Cinderella Man.”
“I felt like I couldn’t break free from it,” he says. “I was happy to act.

“House of the Dragon” looks set to, uh, cook up a storm at this year’s Emmys including bids for many of the cast. Among those most deserving of consideration is Olivia Cooke, who plays the older version of Queen Alicent Hightower in the HBO epic.
Set a century before “Game of Thrones,” “House of the Dragon” depicts the blossoming conflict between several major Westeros families after Paddy Considine‘s King Viserys names his daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock/Emma D’Arcy) as his heir. This leads to various parties vying for the Iron Throne in the ongoing Targaryen war of succession. Alicent Hightower marries King Viserys and births a son, Aegon Targaryen (Ty Tennant/Tom Glynn-Carney), who later challenges for the throne.
As such, Cooke is a major player in “House of the Dragon” and appears in the last half of season one, starting with episode six’s “The Princess and the Queen.

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
“House of the Dragon” is now well established as a record-breaking HBO success, but there was a time when that was not a given. Back in 2015, when “Game of Thrones” was still going strong, HBO knew it needed to prepare a follow-up to the franchise. Here’s how Ryan Condal went from the creator of a failed Pedro Pascal pilot to becoming the “House of the Dragon” showrunner and crafting a series packed with bloody action spectacle, sexy royal intrigue, and a new suite of engaging characters.
Back in 2013, when “Game of Thrones” was two seasons in, Ryan Condal had nothing to do with it. He was on location in Santa Fe with Pascal on would-be NBC pilot “The Sixth Gun,...

Rhys Ifans is best-known for playing offbeat characters in major motion pictures. He first came to fame as Hugh Grant‘s oddball roommate in “Notting Hill.” Since then he has stolen scenes as Luna Lovegood’s spaced-out father in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One,” the comic book villain Lizard (Dr. Curt Connors) in “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and rah-rah-Rasputin in “The King’s Man.” Against this collection of colorful characters, his restrained performance as Otto Hightower in “House of the Dragon” stands in stark contrast.
Otto is the Hand of the King (to Paddy Considine‘s King Viserys Targaryen) and the father to Alicent (Emily Carey/Olivia Cooke). He is “House of the Dragon’s” answer to Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) from “Game of Thrones” — the politico trying to pull the strings from behind the scenes and position his own family as the most powerful in Westeros.

“Game of Thrones” consistently landed loads of Emmy nominations for each of its eight seasons, including several each time for its eclectic cast. Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) was consistently the pick of the bunch, contending each and every season and winning a whopping four times. Now, it’s the turn of the “Thrones'” prequel, “House of the Dragon,” to step into the Emmy spotlight.
Here are five cast members who deserve Emmy consideration.
Emma D’Arcy
D’Arcy plays the older version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is at the center of the entire series. D’Arcy, who is non-binary, imbued Rhaenyra with a steely power and held a commanding presence while on screen. She is a strong contender for Best Drama Actress, ranking just behind Melanie Lynskey (“Yellowjackets”) and Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”) and just ahead of Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), and Sharon Morgan...

Ciarán Hinds is speaking out on the amount of sex in “Game of Thrones.”
Following the infamous criticisms on nudity and sex portrayed in the hit HBO series, Hinds admitted that he was “rather put off” by just how much sex was shown.
“I was rather put off by the amount of sexuality that was going on in it, because it was taking away from the actual political storytelling,” Hinds told The Independent. “But that’s business, I guess, from their perspective.”
Hinds portrayed Mance Rayder, aka the King Beyond the Wall, from Season 3 to Season 5. The “Belfast” actor is now set to appear in Season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”

It’s been a packed seven days of all sorts of “Parties & Premieres” here in Hollywood, as Oscar Week is finally here, after what seemed like a full year of studios campaigning via special events for Academy Award glory. Ironically, two of the biggest things that happened were TV events as the casts of both “Ted Lasso” and “House of the Dragon” hit Tinseltown to remind everyone that movies are definitely not the only thing people watch these days. Fabulous women were feted all over town, fashion was at the forefront and the Irish contingent partied hard in the name of Oscar Wilde, one of history’s all-time party lovers.

“That moment specifically, was a shot that I had in my head for a long time [and] it was the single shot that I worked on the most,” reveals producer and director Greg Yaitanes, about the climactic dragon battle sequence in the Season 1 finale of “House of the Dragon.” For our recent webchat he adds, “I was really excited about the idea and I always remember this when I’m on a plane and we’re in turbulence or a storm, and we go above the clouds, I love the idea that the final moment would be so beautiful and such a relief and while you were catching your breath, in that moment comes this moment of horror. The goal was to really try to be half a beat ahead of the audience, anticipating what the next moment was going to be.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

One of the year’s most stomach-clenching TV moments was a scene in a hotel bathroom in which a woman is searching for sunscreen. In the season two opener of HBO’s The White Lotus, Aubrey Plaza’s clamped-shut lawyer Harper decidedly does not want to be on a couple’s trip in Sicily with her husband’s finance-bro college frenemy and his bubbly trophy wife. First off, they don’t read. Second, they’re irritatingly handsy with each other. But there she is in her suite, reluctantly handing Cameron (Theo James) a pair of swim trunks to borrow and half-heartedly accepting his gratitude that she made the trip at all, especially since, as he implies, her husband was a nerd who couldn’t pull girls back in the day.

Emily Carey has a presence in front of the camera that is both intense and passionate. Even when her character is supposed to be a non-dramatic comely queen, she can still put forward a powerful display that is attention-grabbing. She plays as young Alicent Hightower in the House of the dragon. A beautiful brown-haired, graceful, temperance noble born the daughter of the hand of the king who became the second wife to king Viserys I Targaryen. Emily Carey is not new to being part of a popular TV show. She was part of the famous British medical drama series Casualty.

Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke not only made waves on TikTok for their viral “Negroni Sbagliato” video, but also stunned onscreen as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, respectively, in HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon this year. After a rigorous audition process, the two were cast as the adult versions of their characters (the younger roles are played by Milly Alcock and Emily Carey in the first three episodes), both of whom go through a tumultuous time struggling with complicated family dynamics, lost friendships and who is the true heir to the throne.
D’Arcy and Cooke spoke to THR about how they prepared for their roles, their most challenging scenes and decompressing after the show’s darkest moments.

The following post contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon."
Otto Hightower, played by Rhys Ifans ("The King's Man," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part I"), is a manipulative jerk who pimps out his daughter to gain power for himself. He's cruel and twisty in his machinations and spares no one in his pursuit of what he wants. The man rarely cracks a smile outside of a smirk behind the backs of people he's screwing over or a pleasant tiny one to keep up appearances. "House of the Dragon" is full of death, destruction, incest, a foot fetish, intense birth scenes, and the removal of a child's eyeball. It isn't exactly a comedy. But that doesn't mean that the cast didn't have fun and a barrel of laughs on the set of the HBO series.
Cast members often try to lighten the mood with pranks, like the moment...
