James Gray's 2019 film "Ad Astra" might be best described as "Apocalypse Now" in space. In the film, Col. Kurtz is replaced by the protagonist's long-absent father, and the remote jungle of Cambodia is replaced by the orbit of Neptune. Brad Pitt plays Roy McBride, a laconic astronaut with daddy issues who is assigned to investigate the source of fast-moving cosmic waves that threaten all life in the solar system. The waves, he knows, are part of an experiment that his father (Tommy Lee Jones) began working on some 16 years prior, leaving him behind on Earth. It is the late 21st century, and humans have colonized the moon and other worlds as well. The further one gets away from Earth, however, the more terrifying and difficult living in space becomes.
In the world of "Ad Astra," the dark side of the moon is contested property, and astronaut militia groups fight each other over the land.

This shouldn’t be news to anyone by now, but Brad Pitt is having a bit of a year. We probably should have seen it coming — after all, this is a guy who’s never been satisfied with his own legend. With “Bullet Train” hitting theaters this weekend and Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” still to come this year, Pitt is once again reminding us of his unparalleled ability to keep a foot in both the blockbuster filmmaking and prestige acting worlds.
After emerging as a sex symbol and exploding to become one of the movies’ biggest names, Pitt could have run out the clock as a fading star who showed up to collect a check whenever the price was right. But towards the end of the last century, it started to become clear that he wasn’t interested in being remembered as a tabloid cover model. Roles in films like...

Calling all Brad Pitt stans! You may know him from his suave portrayal of Rusty Ryan in the 2001 film Ocean's Eleven. Or maybe he is familiar from his bold, courageous and selfless role as young astronaut Roy McBride in the 2019 film Ad Astra. However you may have come to know this talented actor, one thing is certain: Brad Pitt has still got it even in his 50s. The enthusiastic performer first stepped on the Hollywood scene as a young actor in the 1989 horror film Cutting Class. Since then, Brad has gone on to lead the success of several blockbuster films including Fight Cub, Moneyball, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, World War Z, and Legends of the Fall. Collecting top...

With Christmas officially just right around the corner, we have one last big push for home media before the big day, just in case you have any last-minute shopping to do. This week’s horror and sci-fi releases make for a pretty great final batch of titles for 2019, too, with Scream Factory at the forefront. Not only have they put together a Collector’s Edition for Silver Bullet (which is probably my most anticipated release of theirs for the entire year), but they’ve also put together a new volume of Universal Horror films and are showing some love to Murders in the Rue Morgue and To The Devil… A Daughter as well.
Ad Astra is also hitting various formats this Tuesday, and if you missed it during its release in October, Patrick Lussier’s Trick comes home on both Blu-ray and DVD this week, too.

James Gray aims for the stars in his ‘to the stars’ picture and he almost gets there. Lost between our world and his, the Ad Astra lands somewhere between what could have been greatness and what, in the end, falls short.
Another performance from Brad Pitt, aiming for the bleachers, sees him playing Astronaut Roy McBride. The film follows McBride as he undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.
The movie is far deeper than that plot can ever detail, it also captures something that is almost impossible to explain.

In a box office win fit for a queen, Focus Features’ “Downton Abbey” ruled over the competition in North America.
The big-screen continuation of the popular British TV show beat expectations with $31 million when it debuted in 3,079 theaters, setting a new opening weekend record for the specialty studio. “Downton Abbey” easily surpassed fellow newcomers “Ad Astra” and “Rambo: Last Blood,” which are in a close race for second place.

Astronaut Roy McBride is unflappable and known for it, out-reputed only by his own father who casts on him a shadow akin to that of the dark side of the moon. His father has been gone a long time, disappearing after a quest to Neptune in the pursuit of intelligent life took him and his crew beyond the detection of home-base. We’re introduced to the younger McBride only briefly before we see him survive a crisis when the space station he’s working on is hit by a mysterious surge of energy that sends him flying from just outside earth’s atmosphere and crashing to the ground. After a quick recovery, he’s brought into a confidential briefing where his informed that the cause of the surges—which are growing in number—is near Neptune, where the Lima mission brought his father before he lost touch with command sixteen years ago.

“Downton Abbey,” the movie adaptation of the popular ITV and PBS series, made $2.1 million at the Thursday box office from 2,800 theaters. It opens in 3,076 theaters this weekend.
The film from Focus Features edged out both Lionsgate and Millennium’s “Rambo: Last Blood” and “Ad Astra” from 20th Century Fox and Disney. All three films are in a tight race this weekend as the top new opener at the box office, with all three projected between roughly $16-24 million. And they have to contend with the still strong “It Chapter Two” and “Hustlers.”
“Downton Abbey” already made $2.2 million in early sneak preview screenings, and the film opened last week internationally, where it has made $11.7 million across 17 markets. In the U.K. where the film is set, it earned the No. 1 spot and opened to $6.3 million. The Thursday preview brings its cumulative total to roughly $4.5 million domestically.

Director/writer James Gray’s film Ad Astra (a Latin term meaning ‘to the stars’) is a rare find – an outstanding science-fiction film more interested in ideas than scary critters. Ad Astra takes place in an unspecified future, described as “a time of conflict and hope”. Brad Pitt stars as Roy McBride, an astronaut so calm his pulse doesn’t rise even when he’s introduced tumbling free-fall to Earth from a Space Antenna in the upper atmosphere. An electric surge has caused Roy’s latest project’s destruction, along with thousands of other catastrophes worldwide. It’s soon clear the energy blasts are coming from Neptune. That’s the location of the ‘Lima Project’, a lost expedition lead by Roy’s father (and American hero) Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) thirty years earlier. Roy and a small crew are enlisted by Colonel Pruitt (Donald Sutherland) and others for a...

In the not too distant future the Earth is in dire straits. Massive pulses of energy originating from the edge of the galaxy have begun to put Earth's survivability in question, and the only person who can possibly do something about it is fearless astronaut, Roy McBride (Brad Pitt). Famed for being able to remain calm under the most stressful conditions - his pulse rate has never moved above 80 - McBride is uniquely qualified to track down and disable the source of this disturbance, but in order to do that he must not only trek to the furthest reaches that man has ever attained, but also face plenty of unfinished business of his own by confronting a father who abandoned him for the glory...

The thing about having daddy issues is that you can never escape them. No matter how far you travel, even into space. In Ad Astra these issues drive Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), an astronaut sent on a mission across the solar system to find out the reason behind recent catastrophes, including fires and plane crashes, taking place on Earth. The kicker here is that his astronaut father (Tommy Lee Jones), who went missing in another space expedition 29 years ago, might be connected to what’s happening. Not only does Roy have to confront the dangers awaiting him on his mission, he also has to deal with his feelings about his father and being abandoned by him.
The space odyssey element is surprising twist for writer director James Gray but the father son imbroglio isn’t at all...

“Hustlers” and “Good Boys” proved that even in the age of Marvel dominance and remake mania, movies that don’t exist within an established franchise can still be box office draws. Can “Ad Astra” continue that trend?
The space drama — starring Brad Pitt and directed by James Gray — arrives on the big screen this weekend alongside two other nationwide releases with fierce competition among older audiences: Lionsgate’s “Rambo: Last Blood” and Focus Features’ “Downton Abbey.” All three titles are eyeing modest debuts around $20 million and will contend with the reigning champ, Warner Bros.’ “It: Chapter Two,” for first place on domestic box office charts. Based on Stephen King’s terrifying novel, “It: Chapter Two” collected $39 million last weekend and should pull in another $20 million during its third outing in theaters. After two weeks of release, the horror blockbuster has amassed $324 million worldwide.

Is Brad Pitt’s character in “Ad Astra” a sociopath? That is the nagging question after watching director and co-writer James Gray’s remarkably stylish and fascinating space drama, which follows astronaut Roy McBride (Pitt) on a mysterious trek to the edge of the solar system to find his estranged father, Clifford (Tommy Lee Jones).
At its core, “Ad Astra” is a family saga about a man grappling with the person he’s become by way of an increasingly intense desire to reconnect with his astronaut dad who abandoned him, the man whose otherworldly curiosity far superseded his paternal ambition. Clifford is more of a figment than an actual person in Roy’s eyes — a man who by default is heralded because he dared to go where no other had gone before, regardless of the casualties along the way. But Roy, a man whose conflicted emotions are confined to internal...

In “Ad Astra,” Brad Pitt’s astronaut Roy McBride crosses the solar system to find and confront his long-lost father, requiring the movie crew to create an authentic-looking future that conveys the theme of traveling long distances to learn the lesson that it’s where you started from that has the most value.
“Visually, the aim was to be as naturalistic and believable as possible,” says production designer Kevin Thompson, whose credits includes “Okja,” “Birdman” and “Michael Clayton,” and who worked closely with director James Gray to find a futuristic yet familiar look for locations on Earth, the moon, Mars and beyond.
A relatable and nostalgic touch was struck for settings on Earth, with Thompson using greens from nature and sky blues that contrasted with the underground worlds created for the moon and Mars. “We wanted the moon to feel like it had been conquered by contractors,” says Thompson, who...

The majestic Ad Astra takes Brad Pitt on a distant journey. In more ways than one.

Independent-minded auteur James Gray gets a lot of things right in Ad Astra, his seventh feature as a writer and director, and his first venture into big budget sci-fi cinema. Whiz-bang, thrill-a-minute space opera this is not; Gray, as one might expect from a look through his previous films, is operating here at the more cerebral end of the genre. Space is mostly silent, even when things blow up, and the cosmos never seemed so vast or lonely as it does in Gray’s near-future vision. But typically for the director, the barren grandeur of his setting is merely the backdrop for one man’s intensely personal inward journey--although ultimately that voyage does not leave the viewer as moved as one might expect.

Brad Pitt is planning to take it easy this awards season.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Monday, the 55-year-old actor revealed that he has no interest in campaigning for Oscar nominations for his roles in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and James Gray’s Ad Astra.
“Oh, man. I’m gonna abstain,” he told the outlet.
“I mean, you never know, and it’s really nice when your number comes up,” he added. “But the goal is for the film to land, to speak to someone whether it’s now or a decade from now.

James Gray never gets the acclaim that he deserves. For years, the filmmaker has been doing high quality work that repeatedly gets the short shrift. Especially with Two Lovers, the lack of love is just absurd. This week, however, he’s finally going to be on the radar of the masses, as his largest movie to date is opening in Ad Astra. With some of his most emotional directing, alongside a phenomenal Brad Pitt lead performance, this is damn near a masterpiece. Without question, this is one of the best works of 2019 so far. Furthermore, it’s not at all like you probably imagined it would be when the project was first announced. It’s something different, and truly, something more. The film is a science fiction drama mixed with a mystery, though that’s an incredibly reductive description. Set in the not at all distant future, humanity has made technological gains,...

Brad Pitt gives a career best performance as an astronaut who travels to the outer edges of the solar system in search of his long lost father in Ad Astra, James Gray’s entrancing new science-fiction movie. The film’s title is part of the latin phrase “Per aspera ad astra”, roughly meaning “through hardships to the stars”
As Earth is hit with a series of electrical surges emanating from outer space, astronaut Roy McBride (Pitt) is called upon by his superiors to discuss a recent incident which almost ended his tragedy for him. When he arrives at the meeting, McBride slowly realises that what the authorities really need from him is to act as bait for his father, the legendary astronaut and scientist Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) who disappeared some three decades earlier whilst on a research mission, and who is thought to be behind the recent cosmic events.

Brad Pitt revealed some intimate details about his life in a New York Times profile published on Wednesday, including the catalyst that caused him to get sober.
Following his high-profile 2016 divorce from Angelina Jolie, his partner of 11 years, Pitt committed to sobriety, he said in the profile.
“I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,” he told the Times.
Pitt started attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, where he said he forged a close relationship with the recovery group of men with whom he shared the most confidential parts of his life.
“You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard,” he shared. “It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”

Updated tracking has New Line’s It: Chapter Two opening between $90 million-$100 million, just behind the previous chapter’s all-time horror and September debut record of $123.4M. However, Fandango reports that advance ticket sales for the Stephen King sequel are the online ticketer’s best ever for a horror pic, outstripping It, Jordan Peele’s Us, last year’s Halloween and The Nun.
Best demos for It: Chapter Two are younger males followed by younger females, similar to the 2017 pic, with solid interest across the board.
In addition, a recent Fandango survey of more than 1,000 chose It: Chapter Two as the top film they want to see for the September through end-of-November period, followed by Warner Bros’ Joker.
Below are the results of the survey in full:

What is out there? What is waiting for us in the stars? James Gray's long-awaited sci-fi adventure Ad Astra has finally arrived. This time Gray takes us out into deep space on a journey with an astronaut named Roy McBride, set in the near future when we've colonized the Moon and Mars but have only just started to reach the edges of our own solar system. McBride is sent on a mission to find his missing father, hoping to figure out what's causing electrical storms wreaking havoc on Earth. This lonely, slow burn space movie is an awe-inspiring, magnificent journey into the stars. As a big time space geek, it ticks every last box. It's sensational to watch, meticulously realized and meditative, more melancholic than exciting but still a stellar experience. Gray's Ad Astra stars Brad Pitt as an astronaut whose greatest skill is never letting his heart-rate go over 80. He's calm,...

In the opening sequence of “Ad Astra,” Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), a veteran U.S. astronaut, is doing what he does at the top of a space antenna, an elaborate piece of technological scaffolding so tall that it juts right up from the earth into the outer void. (It’s enough to make that famous 1932 photograph of construction workers eating lunch while sitting on a skyscraper girder not look vertigo-inducing.) Suddenly, there’s a mysterious power surge, which sends dozens of astronauts tumbling off the antenna. Roy bounds down a few levels to shut off the power, then makes his own escape, leaping off the structure and plunging to the earth below — an ultimate sky-dive that takes him from the blackness of space to the blueness of the atmosphere, until the earth begins to rear up and, at long last, he pulls his parachute strap.

Neil Armstrong, a man better remembered for being first than he is for being funny, once said that his greatest regret was that “my work required an enormous amount of my time, and a lot of travel.” It’s a bittersweet line from a taciturn giant who always tended to find the right words; an admission of deep sadness coated inside the candied shell of a solid quip. But while no one expects an Armstrong quote to make them laugh, some people — especially filmmakers — only seem to hear the pain underneath the astronaut’s punchline.
And they can’t quite wrap their heads around the questions that it raises. What could possibly inspire someone to climb aboard a volatile rocket and blast themselves towards another world in a screaming plume of fire? In James Gray’s Ad Astra, Brad Pitt plays an astronaut traveling to the farthest reaches of our solar system to find his lost father and grapple with existential questions. And at the heart of the film, Pitt said at its Venice press conference earlier today, was the exploration of what constructs of masculinity mean and whether they need to be broken down.
“Having grown up in an era where we’re taught to be strong, not show weakness, don’t be disrespected,” Pitt said, “There’s a certain value in that, but there’s also a barrier that’s created with this kind of embracing of the self, because you’re denying, in a sense, those pains or the things you feel shame, whether real or imagined.
“We were asking the question, is there a better definition for us? Does being more open provide you with a better relation...

Brad Pitt, the star and producer of James Gray’s sci-fi drama “Ad Astra,” which world premieres at Venice on Thursday, said that the film was a personal one and to some extent dealt with the modern concept of “masculinity.”
“In retrospect, what James and I were digging at was that definition of masculinity,” Pitt said at a news conference, alongside Gray and co-star Liv Tyler. “We’ve both grown up in an era where we were asked to be strong…and there is a value in that, but [also a] barrier because you’re hiding some of those things you feel ashamed of. We all hide and carry individual pain and wounds.”
Pitt plays Roy McBride, an astronaut who has followed in his father’s footsteps. The relationship between the two men is central to the film. (McBride’s father is played by Tommy Lee Jones.)
