Three years after arriving at Sony Pictures, Ravi Ahuja has been named President and Chief Operating Officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment, effective April 1.
The executive, who is currently Chairman, Global Television Studios and Corporate Development, is being promoted to a position that hasn’t been previously filled.
While Sony Pictures Entertainment didn’t comment on succession planning, Ahuja’s promotion has all the marks of exactly that in regards to who will ultimately take the reins after Tony Vinciquerra’s tenure ends as Spe Chairman and CEO. Duly note that Vinciquerra is not leaving the studio anytime soon.
Ahuja will keep his current chairman role and title at Sony Pictures Television and continue to report to Vinciquerra.
Similar to Vinciquerra, Ahuja is a Fox Networks vet; the duo worked together there. Ahuja joined Fox in 2007 after a 12-year run after serving as CFO of Virgin Entertainment Group. As CFO of the Fox Networks Group,...

Sony Pictures Entertainment is upping its head of television Ravi Ahuja to president and chief operating officer of the entire studio.
While not explicitly stated by Spe chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra in his internal memo regarding Ahuja’s appointment to the No. 2 role, it is a clear indication of Vinciquerra’s succession plan for when he ultimately decides to retire from his top post in the coming years.
Ahuja, currently the chairman of Sony global television studios and corporate development, will take on his new responsibilities beginning April 1 and shift to Sony’s Poitier Building in Culver City, while still retaining his position as chief of Sony Pictures Television.
He will continue reporting directly to Vinciquerra, and their respective lines of reports and leadership will not be changed as a result of the promotion. Tom Rothman remains in his role as chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s motion picture group,...

Sony Pictures Entertainment is making a big change in its leadership.
The entertainment studio has named Ravi Ahuja president and COO, according to a memo to staff Wednesday from Spe CEO Tony Vinciquerra. Ahuja is taking on the new role “to work more closely with me and our entire leadership team as we chart our path forward through a rapidly changing and increasingly complex entertainment industry.”
Ahuja, currently chairman of Sony Pictures Television and head of corporate development, will also continue to oversee the company’s TV business in his elevated role.
The promotion to president and COO (a position that did not exist previously) positions Ahuja as a likely successor to Vinciquerra, though a source noted that the Spe CEO is not expected to leave his post anytime soon.

Sony Pictures Television vet Suzanne Prete, who has driven the studio’s game show division since its launch in 2022, has been upped to president. The exec will continue to report to Sony Pictures TV chairman Ravi Ahuja, who announced the news Thursday in a memo to staffers.
“We established our dedicated game show group just two years ago, and under Suzanne’s leadership, our game show division has excelled beyond even our lofty expectations,” Ahuja said in the note, pointing particularly to Prete’s stewardship of both “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune.”
“With her keen understanding of the incredible value these series hold, Suzanne was instrumental in securing a landmark five-year renewal deal with ABC to take the shows through the 2027-2028 season. William Astor, who co-founded kids TV juggernaut Silvergate Media, has stepped down as the company’s chair.
Silvergate, which was acquired by Sony Pictures Television in 2019, quietly re-branded as Sony Pictures Television – Kids in 2022.
“I can confirm I am no longer associated with Sony and have resigned as director and chairman,” Astor told Variety. He stepped down at the end of December.
Astor originally co-founded the company alongside well-known British television producer Waheed Alli back in 2011. It is best known for producing children’s animated franchises “Octonauts” — which has inspired films and theme park attractions across the world — and Nickelodeon animation “Peter Rabbit,” based on the classic children’s books by Beatrix Potter. It has also produced shows including “Hilda,” a Netflix animated series based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novels of the same name, and Nickelodeon’s “Sunny Day,” about the adventures of a young hair stylist.

Banijay beckons: The future of All3Media has been under discussion for a large portion of 2023, and it appears a deal might be reaching the finish line. It’s entirely possible there will have been another update by the time you read this, but as of right now it looks like the auction for the Squid Game: The Challenge and The Traitors super-indie will end with rival Banijay the winner. In October, we revealed Banijay, Peter Chernin’s North Road Company and Goldman Sachs were the frontrunners, with ITV keeping tabs on things from the sidelines. During the streaming boom, Sony was one of the few big entertainment companies that held back from creating its own platform. And now that the market has cooled down, Ravi Ahuja, chairman of Sony Pictures’ Global Television Studios, sees this as a massive advantage.
During a keynote at Content London on Wednesday, Ahuja said that what drew him to Sony in the first place was because while working at Disney and Fox, he “saw firsthand the complexity of operating in that kind of environment.”
“Here, it’s not only a very large, independent studio, with the benefit of a lot of resources … but with a very focused mission: make great shows, find the right home,” Ahuja said. “That’s it. It’s not overly complicated by trying to satisfy platform demands, trying to balance different things.”
Now that the strikes are over, Ahuja said that “things are getting back to normal” in the production world.

Sony Pictures Televisions’ Ravi Ahuja has described how the U.S. market had become “too hot” and “inefficient” over recent years, but is now moving towards a healthier “cooling phase.”
During a keynote interview at Content London, Spt’s Chairman of Global Television Studios said the U.S. market was “getting back to normal” two weeks after the SAG-AFTRA deal was unveiled, though it has been a “mad scramble” to get productions back up and running.
“This is an interesting inflection point for our industry,” he added, pointing to Covid, the streaming reset and other market factors. “So many things have happened. It’s a new normal, let’s look at it that way.”
Ahuja said that volumes of programs being ordered had dropped off “a decent amount, even before the strikes.”
He added: “Against the strikes, the ad market contraction around the world and the streaming reset happening at the same time,...

The actors strike is over, and news has emerged that a biopic of Elon Musk, directed by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, is in the works. The movie from A24 is to be based on Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Musk.
So the guessing game is on: Who would best capture the essence of the mercurial, meme-loving tech mogul on the big screen?
It won’t surprise you to learn that the internet has already chewed over this question. In a recent Reddit thread, commenters’ top-voted casting picks for Musk were: Nicolas Cage, Rami Malek, Robert Downey Jr. and Jesse Eisenberg (the last being a troll’s pick: Eisenberg starred as Musk rival Mark Zuckerberg in “The Social Network”).
Other suggestions from sundry corners of the web have included Brendan Fraser (who incidentally starred in Aronofsky’s “The Whale”); Matt LeBlanc of “Friends” fame; Scottish-American actor John Barrowman; Kevin Durand; and Matthew Broderick.

Sony’s chairman of global TV studios Ravi Ahuja warned that the end of the peak TV era will likely “be painful for most companies,” as cost-cutting measures across the industry leads to less shows and money spent on marketing.
Ahuja, who also manages corporate development, said that while he hopes the big media companies are done with layoffs after this year’s staff reduction efforts, he predicts the changing streaming business model will find media power players cutting back on content production and promotion over the next two years.
“You’ll see a little bit of the air coming out of the balloon,” Ahuja told TheWrap’s editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman during a spotlight conversation at TheGrill, the publication’s annual business conference, on Wednesday. “The portfolio shows may...

Pure Flix, Sony’s faith and family-based streaming platform, is set to merge with Great American Media, the rival to the Hallmark Channel, it was announced on Thursday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the tie-up will see Pure Flix fall into the new entity, with Great American Media throwing in two cable networks — Great American Family and Great American Living — and a free ad-supported subscription streaming channel, Great American Adventures.
The proposed merger comes as family and faith-based TV series like Ted Lasso and The Chosen hit with audiences.

Bill Abbott, the former longtime top exec at the Hallmark Channel’s media parent, who has been running Great American Media, will oversee the combined entity. He became CEO of Great American Media in 2021, about a year after exiting Hallmark after an 11-year run. His departure followed backlash over the pulling of an ad for a wedding planning company featuring a same-sex couple.

The proposed merger of India’s Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) and Culver Max Entertainment Private Limited (formerly Sony Pictures Networks India Private Limited) has received approval from the country’s Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange.
“The approval from the stock exchanges marks a firm and positive step in the overall merger approval process,” Zeel said in a statement. “The approvals permit the company to proceed with the next steps in the overall merger process.”
In April this year, Sony Pictures Networks changed its corporate name to Culver Max Entertainment. The name is used exclusively by the holding company, with Sony Pictures Networks continuing as the consumer facing brand.
In Dec. 2021 the companies signed definitive agreements to merge Zeel with and into Spni and combine their linear TV networks, digital assets, production operations and program libraries.
