Shocking and resonant, disarmingly grotesque and weirdly fun, “The Substance” is a feminist body-horror film that should be shown in movie theaters all over the land. By that, I don’t mean that it’s some elegant exercise in egghead darkness like the films of David Cronenberg, or a patchy postmodern punk curio like “Titane.” Coralie Fargeat, the writer-director of “The Substance,” has a voice that’s italicized, in-your-face, garishly accessible and thrillingly extreme. She draws on much of the hyperbolic flamboyance that’s come to define megaplex horror. But unlike 90 percent of those movies, “The Substance” is the work of a filmmaker with a vision. She’s got something primal to say to us.
“The Substance” tells the story of an aging Hollywood actress-turned-aerobics-workout-host, named Elisabeth Sparkle and played by Demi Moore, who gets fired from a TV network because she is now deemed too old. In a rage of desperation,...

“Plain, redheaded, and freckled John has nothing going for him, except there's one thing he's proud of—he's best friends with the two popular and mischievous twins Jekyll and Hyde. Jekyll (the calm and collected older brother) and Hyde (the cheerful younger brother) love switching places, and John is the only one who can tell them apart. Two Netflix shows have remarkably similar setups, but their protagonists have experienced invasive, body-snatching monsters in very different ways.
What Happens In Sweet Home?
Cha Hyun-su is the only person left in his family after a devastating tragedy. He is forced to move to a run-down apartment complex called Green Home, which is where he is living when monsters begin to attack the city.
Hyun-su's body is invaded by a parasitic monster, which leaves him with superhuman abilities – but he is also locked in a constant struggle against his violent alter-ego.
What Happens in Parasyte: The Grey?
Mysterious alien creatures have begun arriving on Earth and inhabiting human hosts, which results in the hosts dying and turning into monsters.
One such host is grocery store clerk Jeong Su-in. However, after she is injured in an attack her parasite is unable to completely take control over her body. The two begin a totally unique co-existence,...

George Waggner's 1941 horror film "The Wolf Man" introduced audiences to, essentially, the "second officer" of the Universal Monsters canon. Everyone knows that Dracula is the captain of the monster ship, and that Frankenstein is his first officer (a position he often shares with the Bride). The Wolf Man is always third in command, perhaps serving as a security officer or an enforcer. Mummies, gillmen, invisible men, Dr. Hydes, and other ancillary ghouls serve lower down in the crew.
Watching the original "Wolf Man" film, however, reveals a dark and sad tale about Larry Talbot who is attacked by a wolf on a misty night in Wales, afflicting him with the curse of the werewolf. Throughout the year, Larry will transform into an animalistic wolf/human creature and stalk and kill random victims. The tale is terrifying and tragic and inspired many pop culture tales to follow -- as well as many nightmares.

It's well known to fans of "The Wizard of Oz" that actor Ray Bolger was originally cast to play the Tin Man and famed comedian Buddy Ebsen was cast as the Scarecrow. They swapped roles at Bolger's insistence, as Bolger had a personal attachment to the role; he was inspired to become an actor after seeing Vaudevillian Fred Stone play the part on stage when Bolger was a child. Ebsen was fine with changing roles, although he had to drop out of production due to makeup problems. The silvery Tin Man makeup contained powered aluminum and Ebsen breathed in big clouds of it, making him sick. At the time, many merely assumed Ebsen had an allergy. Ebsen was replaced with Jack Haley, and the makeup was altered to be a paste instead of a powder.

Stars: Eddie Izzard, Lindsay Duncan, Scott Chambers, Robyn Cara, Morgan Watkins | Written by Dan Kelly-Mulhern | Directed by Joe Stephenson
Eddie Izzard stars in this gender-flipped reboot of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic horror story. Produced by the resurrected Hammer Studio, it’s creepy and atmospheric, but altogether too restrained, when it should have been allowed to run riot.
A newspaper headline at the beginning of Doctor Jekyll states that “Trans CEO Nina Jekyll” (Eddie Izzard), the head of a large pharmaceutical corporation, has become a recluse, disappearing from the public eye due to health issues. In fact, she’s holed up at a lavish British mansion, where her no-nonsense housekeeper Poole (Lindsay Duncan) has been trying to hire a live-in care assistant to assist Nina with taking her medication and various other duties.

Review: Founded in 1934, the Hammer film production company became very popular when it started releasing horror films in the mid-1950s. From that point through the early ‘70s, Hammer was one of the biggest names in horror… but then they found it hard to compete with the big horror films of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and things gradually fell apart for them. In 1979, the company went into liquidation. Attempts to revive the Hammer brand began in 2008, and we’ve seen some notable releases from the company in recent years: Let Me In, The Resident, The Woman in Black, and The Lodge among them.

“I’ve seen Paris, France, and Paris, Paramount Pictures,” Ernst Lubitsch said, or so they say, “and on the whole I prefer Paris, Paramount Pictures.”
The great director’s preference for the Hollywood city of lights over the French one expresses a common enough affinity for illusion over reality, but the studio in question was not chosen for alliteration alone. If gritty Warner Bros. specialized in mean streets and threadbare apartments and glitzy MGM spent big on grand hotels and emerald cities, Paramount transported moviegoers into realms of dreamy exoticism, allegedly set in Vienna, Budapest or St. Petersburg, but conjured with better-than-the-original costuming, set design, lighting and dialogue. In an age before jumbo jets, who was to quibble over verisimilitude?

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Fire Country Season 2 Episode 2 “Like Breathing Again.”] “It was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Fire Country star Kevin Alejandro admits when it came to directing a scene in the latest episode: His character’s daughter, Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila), took on a dangerous cave rescue. Gabriela saved the victim and was fine … meaning she can now focus on what her father had to tell her after. Manny said that her mother didn’t abandon them, but rather, he was never there for her. And so he encourages her to invite her to her upcoming wedding to Diego (Rafael De La Fuente). Below, Alejandro takes us inside directing the episode, talks Manny’s new role at 42, relationships with Gabriela, Bode (Max Thieriot), and Sharon (Diane Farr), and more. Talk about directing Gabriela’s cave rescue. Kevin Alejandro: It was an adrenaline rush. I’d never directed anything like that specifically underwater.

I greatly looked forward to the ‘sequel’ rebirth of Hammer Horror into today’s age. It is important to note that those of us who delighted in the Halcyon days of Hammer Studios with the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Sherlock Holmes, The Reptile, The Gorgon, and many others stalking around opulent yet budget-conscious sets with blood, gore, and low-cut necklines may be in for a bit of shock. Those types of films meaning the ‘Old’ Hammer Studios formula do not work for audiences of today. That is why Joe Stephenson Directed Doctor Jekyll (2023) is pivotal to the new ‘John Gore’ era of horror filmmaking, to that end it does not disappoint new and old on many fronts.

Look, in order to write about film for a living, you truly have to love the medium of movies unconditionally. So, believe me when I say that it's genuinely difficult to imagine a less appealing combination of words than the ones in the headline above and which I'm going to attempt to make sense of here. Hot off the divisive reactions and internet memes that followed the release of last year's "The Whale," visionary filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has apparently lined up his next project, and it's almost guaranteed to be even more controversial than anything the director has made yet -- which is saying a lot!
According to Variety, Aronofsky is once again teaming up with A24, this time to adapt a biopic of someone you've probably heard about once or twice in the last several months: the richest man in the world, Elon Musk. The indie studio reportedly won...

Robert Louis Stevenson’s horror novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a legendary story that has been spooking audience since the 19th century.
Now Hammer Horror returns to the big screen with a modern-day adaptation of Stevenson’s work, can it transform into memorable version of the story?
Directed by Joe Stephenson, Doctor Jekyll revolves around young Rob, a drug addict who has just been released from prison. Eager to prove himself and also to earn visitation rights to his dying daughter, Rob is sent to be a caregiver for the reclusive billionaire Doctor Nina Jekyll. As the two bond, Rob starts to suspect that there is something not quite right about his new employer…
Casting Eddie Izzard as the two-sided eponymous anti-hero is the cleverest aspect of this film. The actress is having the best time in this gender-bent exploration of Stevenson’s novel.

Pooh Bear is back, but not the cutesy, softly-spoken and honey-guzzling children’s variety. This one comes with sledgehammer and a penchant for bloody murder.
The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal the first stills from Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, the follow-up to the micro-budget British slasher that went viral last year for its childhood-bludgeoning premise, became one of the most talked about films of 2023 and would earn $5.2 million in the global box office after costing under $100,000 to make.
Currently in production, the sequel comes with a bigger budget, more kills and even an Olivier Award-winning, BAFTA-nominated star in the form of Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral), who has joined the cast.

Since the publication of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1886 there have been over 120 adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. The adaptations have changed and evolved to keep the story fresh; these include a Blaxploitation retelling, Dr Black and Mr Hyde, and Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, where the good Doctor transforms into a woman. The latest reimagining of this classic is arguably its most diverse, as Jekyll and Hyde are both transgender women.

‘The Purge’ Heads to Open Waters in Halloween Horror Nights Live Show at Universal Studios Hollywood
Blumhouse will bring two new live shows to Universal Studios Hollywood for Halloween Horror Nights 2023: “The Purge: Dangerous Waters” and “Blumhouse: Behind the Screams.”
Ten years after the franchise debuted, “The Purge” will head to open waters for the first time for a live Hhn in “Dangerous Waters,” which finds a politician and his entourage fleeing to an island in order to avoid the Purge — a government-sanctioned 12-hour window during which all crime, including murder, is legal.
Per the announcement, “Sanctuary is fleeting when the island is quickly overrun by Purgers and the hunt is on” in a show that “celebrates an evening of anarchy without thought of punishment or fear of retribution.” Naturally, “Dangerous Waters” will take place in the much-beloved WaterWorld venue and will feature “adrenaline-filled action sequences, stunts, spectacular lighting and laser effects, high fall fire burns and massive explosions.”

Acclaimed horror production company Blumhouse is bringing two new live entertainment experiences – “The Purge: Dangerous Waters” and “Blumhouse: Behind the Screams” – inspired by some of its blockbuster films, to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, Bloody Disgusting has learned this afternoon.
It’s been a decade since The Purge first declared all crime legal for 12 hours as part of the government’s annually sanctioned Purge and an iconic horror franchise was born. Now, for the first time, “The Purge: Dangerous Waters” takes the blockbuster film franchise into an entirely new environment…open waters, in an all-new live show.

You can’t talk about the history of horror without talking about Hammer Horror, with Hammer Film Productions over the years releasing countless classics including their own takes on iconic monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Mummy, and their movies solidifying the likes of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing as true icons in the horror genre.
Variety reports this morning that British theater producer John Gore has acquired Hammer Films and Studios, and he’ll lead a new team aiming to revitalize the legendary brand.
“Under Gore’s management, the plan is to invest significantly in Hammer Films to breathe new life into the studio, blending the nostalgic charm of Hammer with modern cinematic style and innovation, while preserving its heritage and library,” Variety’s exclusive report details. “A new slate of films and projects will be unveiled imminently.”
First up is the Eddie Izzard-starring Doctor Jekyll, set for release later this year.

“It’s a mad way to make a film, and I’m not sure it’s not something I would rush into again,” director Hope Dickson Leach said of the process behind her latest feature, the Edinburgh competition title The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Leach, best known for her well-received debut, The Levelling, which debuted at Toronto in 2016, was approached by the National Theatre of Scotland during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to create a hybrid film-theatre project that could engage audiences while health restrictions were still in place.
The result was a stage production of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, performed live at the Leith Theatre in Edinburgh by a troop of actors who were tracked around the venue by six cameras. The footage was mixed and edited live by Leach, who sat in an operating van outside the venue.

Appropriately the City of Edinburgh takes centre stage in this retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. Relocating the story to the Scottish capital Hope Dickinson Leach (The Levelling) is given free rein to explore all its gothic glory, to spin a tale of human behaviour and the inhumanity of the upper classes.
Going back to the source, our story concerns Gabriel Utterson (Lorn MacDonald), a solicitor of extremely modest means. Quiet and well-mannered he has all the hallmarks of a Victorian gentleman except the status itself. A drawback which he hopes his friendship with Doctor Henry Jekyll (Henry Pettigrew) could one day remedy. However, Jekyll is prone to strange behaviour, changing his will in favour of his assistant Mr Hyde, a man curiously linked to violent assaults and deaths throughout the city. As Utterson edges closer to the truth of the two men he finds his place in the city elevated by the wealthy,...

My favorite episode of "The Twilight Zone" is "The Howling Man." Self-adapted from a short story by Charles Beaumont, the episode's star is David Ellington (H.M. Wynant), an American hiker in post-war Europe. Caught in a storm, he stumbles upon a monastery and meets the secretive Order of Truth, led by Brother Jerome (John Carradine). The Order has the titular man (Robin Hughes) imprisoned in a cell, claiming him to be Satan in human form. After some persuasion from both parties, Ellington ultimately frees the prisoner and all of mankind pays for his mistake.
I discovered the episode when I was a Catholic schoolboy and a burgeoning horror fan, so the premise stirred primal fear within my soul. Even now, with my faith lapsed, "The Howling Man" is still an excellent half-hour of TV, with some of the best atmosphere and mystery in "The Twilight Zone."

The film will have its’ World Premiere at FrightFest on Friday, August 25 and stars Eddie Izzard, Scott Chambers, Lindsay Duncan and Simon Callow. The film’s score is from Blair Mowat.

When ex-convict Rob takes the carer position to the infamous Nina Jekyll, little does he know he’s part of an evil master plan devised by her alter ego Rachel Hyde. But to what lengths will Rob go to satisfy his client’s weird wishes and his own ambitions for the daughter he has never even seen?

Eddie Izzard stars in the upcoming Doctor Jekyll, which will receive its World Premiere at FrightFest on August 25. While you wait, a short teaser has debuted this morning.
There’s not much to see here, but the teaser does give us a fresh look at Eddie Izzard as Dr. Nina Jekyll, a brand new take on the classic horror character. Check it out below.
Director Joe Stephenson recently told Fangoria, “There’ve been over 100 cinematic adaptations of Stevenson’s novella, but there has never been a trans Dr. Jekyll. There seem to be some assumptions that because Nina is a trans character, we are somehow going to make it about gender. That is not the case; the themes of our film are true to the original work.”

Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights event will be returning to the Universal Orlando Resort on September 1st, and the festivities will begin at Universal Studios Hollywood on September 7th. A couple months ago, we heard that haunted houses based on The Last of Us will be added to both theme parks this year, and soon after it was revealed that a haunted house inspired by season 4 of Stranger Things will also be in the mix. Now Universal has announced several more attractions that will be part of this year’s Halloween Horror Nights – including haunted houses inspired by the killer doll Chucky, the Universal Monsters, and the new Exorcist sequel The Exorcist: Believer, which is set to reach theatres on October 13th!
Here’s a bit more information on each of the new haunted houses, as reported by Fangoria.

Halloween Horror Nights is adding The Exorcist and Chucky to its terrifying lineup of 2023 houses.
Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood attendees will have the chance to experience the scares of three new houses — The Exorcist: Believer, Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count and Universal Monsters: Unmasked — when the annual event kicks off in September.
The Exorcist: Believer is inspired not by the original 1973 film, which still ranks as one of the most terrifying films ever made, but by Universal Pictures’ new horror film from Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment. The house will transport guests to a busy Haiti street market, where a strange folk doll with three eyes helps open a demonic portal. What follows is an “awakening of sinister spirits,” according to Universal Parks, along with the disappearances of two 12-year-old girls who are found three days later. Despite having no memory of what happened, they exhibit unsettling behavior...

One of the hallmarks of the Halloween season, whether you’re in Los Angeles or Orlando, is attending Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. The spooky takeover of the theme parks, which includes haunted houses, more loosely compartmentalized “scare zones” and creepy ghouls wandering around looking to freak you out (they’re called “scare actors” in Universal speak and they are deeply committed to their jobs), is an absolute blast each and every year. And this year is no different, with a host of new houses announced for both coasts – including houses based on the series “Chucky” and one devoted to the upcoming next chapter in the beloved franchise “The Exorcist: Believer.”
Universal announced three houses that both resorts will feature in their line-up of blood-curding terrors – The Exorcist: Believer, which “will unleash an entirely new level of terror to Halloween Horror Nights”; Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count, based on the Syfy and USA series “Chucky,...

Queens of the Stone Age are back with In Times New Roman…, their first album since 2017. Listen to the record below via Apple Music or Spotify.
A lot’s gone down since Qotsa dropped their funky, Mark Ronson-produced last album, Villains. We’ve lived through a global pandemic, and frontman Josh Homme navigated a messy divorce — and received a cancer diagnosis. These events influenced the sounds and themes of In Times New Roman…, which features classic Queens guitar and some of Homme’s darkest lyrics to date.
Consequence caught up with Homme to discuss the new LP, his desire to “be like Dr. Jekyll,” and why “loud is important.” You can read the full conversation here. Additionally, Homme guested on a recent episode of Kyle Meredith With…, where he shared his approach to creating “music for all stereotypes,” and explained how the band’s new album is essentially soundtracking his own life.

Tatiana Maslany, Laurie Metcalf, and Paul Sparks star in ‘Grey House,’ a scary, psychological play that turns Broadway into a haunted house of horrors.
“I’ve seen this movie. We don’t make it…”
Horror is a popular genre for many reasons, but at the end of the day there is just nothing like the genuine experience of being afraid. Horror films do their best to immerse their audience in terror with no reprieve, yet there are inherent limitations to this storytelling medium. There’s still screen, and therefore safety, between the audience and their fears. Live theater, especially those on Broadway, live and die through their ability to not just keep audiences entertained, but to truly believe in the spectacle before them. Horror on Broadway is therefore a deeply appealing combination, albeit one that’s all-too rare because of the difficulty in its execution.

Living through an era of seemingly endless and ever-expanding franchises and multiverses, when “listen to the fans” is a governing principle for the purveyors of pop culture, it’s easy to forget that the superhero genre once offered filmmakers an exciting avenue for pop-art indulgence. Pity, then, that appreciation continues to elude Ang Lee’s Hulk, an ambitious take on Marvel’s big green menace and one of the boldest entries into the cinematic superhero canon.
A willfully melodramatic amalgamation of styles and thematic fixations, from atomic anxiety to childhood trauma, the 2003 film was derided for its lack of action and purported over-reliance on dialogue. Unsurprisingly, the woeful “Critics Consensus” for the film on Rotten Tomatoes read: “There’s ultimately too much talking and not enough smashing.”

Maybe more than any other character in the pantheon of horror villain legends, Freddy Krueger was custom built to put the fear of god into us. Nothing about his presence was thrown together haphazardly. Instead, nearly every aspect of his design had a tremendous amount of thought put into it. From makeup effects great David B. Miller’s inspired work creating the Krueger’s crispy kisser, to the subliminal mind games played by creator Wes Craven when choosing certain aspects of his look (the razor glove was meant to resemble the clawed paws of a prehistoric predator while the colors of his sweater were chosen due to the difficult time the human eye has processing red and green together), we were meant to feel Freddy’s menace on a subatomic level.

Chukwudi Iwuji became one of the McU's best villains with his appearance as The High Evolutionary in James Gunn's trilogy capper "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." His ego and cruelty know no bounds in this film, but Iwuji was still able to imbue some humanity to the character (even if he couldn't defend The High Evolutionary). And that's without even having two or three previous appearances to set him up as a complicated, if ultimately evil man.
Gunn first worked with Iwuji on his "Suicide Squad" spin-off show "Peacemaker," where the actor got to flex a completely different set of acting muscles. His character in that show could be seen as villainous (and was seen that way for a hot second) because he's an outsider that had to get by on deception.

From there, Turner’s career experienced even higher heights in the 40s. The 40s saw her starring in notable features like Honky Tonk and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, further growing her celebrity.
Deep in the 40s and 50s, Turner was already an established star and an A-lister in her own right.

Director Joe Stephenson’s Doctor Jekyll, “a modern interpretation” of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, wrapped production over a year ago, and while we continue to wait to hear when we’re going to have a chance to see the movie, Fangoria has unveiled a new image that shows gender fluid comedian/actor Eddie Izzard (The Lost Symbol) as Doctor Nina Jekyll. You can take a look at the image on the Fangoria website, or at the bottom of this article.
Stephenson developed Doctor Jekyll with first-time writer Dan Kelly-Mulhern during the UK lockdown. The story they crafted follows the reclusive Nina Jekyll finding friendship with her newly hired help, Rob. They must work together to prevent Hyde from destroying her life.
Rob is played by Scott Chambers, who worked with Stephenson on the film Chicken. Also in the cast are...

Eddie Izzard stars in the upcoming Doctor Jekyll from Hammer Studios, and our friends over at Fangoria have shared an exclusive first-look image with us this afternoon.
Director Joe Stephenson tells Fangoria, “There’ve been over 100 cinematic adaptations of Stevenson’s novella, but there has never been a trans Dr. Jekyll. There seem to be some assumptions that because Nina is a trans character, we are somehow going to make it about gender. That is not the case; the themes of our film are true to the original work.”

Raoul Thomas Moat wasn’t the first and won’t be the last self-pitying, self-righteous, narcissistic example of violent toxic masculinity, but he was certainly one of the most destructive. ITV’s three-part The Hunt for Raoul Moat is a superbly directed (by Gareth Bryn) dramatisation of Moat’s last murderous days on earth in the summer of 2010, during which he managed to evade the police for a week and kill, maim and destroy the lives of those around him. He took his own life in a final pathetic act of nihilism, caught by the television cameras in grainy nighttime vision, his sawn-off shotgun pointed at his head. It was the ultimate insult heaped on his victims that he escaped justice. The manhunt around Northumbria as Moat escalated his threats to kill random members of the public gripped the nation. The drama is a tense and faithful re-enactment of what happened,...
