Review of The Cheat

The Cheat (1915)
Racism
4 June 2004
I can't believe I saw a review stating that this movie treats Asians in a good light. We watched this film in a college course in Asian American history and it is very racist. The point of showing the film was to show the reflection of the stereotypes of the then current U.S ideal. Japanese-Americans demanded that it be changed. To appease them, they just changed the Japanese character to a different nationality (Burmese). It tries to put Asians into a role of evil, conniving and terrorizing white women. You can't get much worse then this and reflects the Anti-Asian movement which was in full swing in Hollywood and beyond. The U.S policy-making and laws show this as well.

Although the film is important in film history, it demonstrates the typical stereotypes of Asians. Put this alongside "Birth of a Nation" as both are on the same level.
