Review of The Pledge

The Pledge (I) (2001)
Nice *subtle* surprises
6 July 2001
I liked this movie a lot, because it was very subtle in how it tricked me. Unlike movies like "The Sixth Sense" or "The Crying Game", this one did not feel like it was designed to completely mislead me and then slap me in the face with the truth. The Pledge just let me assume what I wanted to and see what I wanted to, and then fairly gently showed me that I had made an error in judgement.

It was pretty slow, yeah. Don't start it ten minutes before your normal bed time and try to stay up late to watch it - you might not make it through. But my partner usually chooses action flicks and comedies designed for those with a short attention span, and he wasn't bored with this one.

I liked Mr. Nicholson in this movie. In his last few movies it seemed to me he got away with just raising his eyebrow and giving that classic Nicholson crazy-man smile instead of *acting*. The Pledge was different for him.
