Review of Jebiga

Jebiga (2000)
4/10
Could be better. However still brave and interesting.

OK. I watched this movie three years after it's theatrical release and I must say that I wasn't all crazy about it however looking back at the time it was made it definitely set the precedence (along with V Petek Zvecer) for low budget feature films in Slovenia. It was made from scratch (if we compare it to other state-sponsored feature films) with amateur actors and extremely young and inexperienced crew (which is clearly seen in the movie couple of times). Of course it could be better however it took a lot of courage to make it and of course a lot of enthusiasm. As I said before it also set the ground for the low budget filmmaking in Slovenia. Feature films Jebiga and V Petek Zvecer (both budgeted at around $25.000 for production) showed that movies can also be done in Slovenia if you bypass the Slovenian Film Fund (although they both received money for postproduction from it) and just go out and make it. Both movies could be much better however given the time and money (they were both shot in 14 days) they both look and feel fresh and different from standard Slovenian film production. Some say worse, some say better. I say welcome! Aftermath of their release was over a dozen feature films made using the same formula. We could definitely say that together Jebiga and V Petek Zvecer started a new wave of filmmaking in Slovenia.
