A warm movie that lacks good character development
8 September 2001
Ferzan Oztepek creates a very warm, somewhat charming film that unfortunately lacks in depth.

The `ignorant fairies' of the movie are its principal characters Antonia and Michelle. At the beginning of the film when Antonia finds out that her late husband had a seven-year relationship with another man, she gets overwhelmed by her emotions (and prejudices), and has a very rough time understanding the world to which her husband belonged. Michelle starts out on his journey believing that Antonia is nothing but an evil woman who stole the love of his life from him. Both characters, step by step with the help of their friends, most notably Serra (an overweight woman with a wonderful sense of humour and apparently a very painful past) and Emir (an AIDS victim mourning his lost relationship), ultimately succeed in overcoming their ignorance of each other's world and build a friendship.

The most well developed character is Antonia. We get a glimpse in her past, her motivations and hopes. Oztepek spends much less time on Michelle. Without a doubt we need to see more of him. His psychology remains only barely touched by the director. The main supporting cast consisting of Serra and Emir suffers the same fate. Both characters are very interesting and have a lot of potential for description, which once again is omitted by the director, leaving the audience disappointed.
