I'm with Lucy (2002)
7/10
Pleasantly Surprised
1 December 2002
I was pleasantly surprised by this little film, way surprised. Without giving away more than promo information, I'll say that Lucy (Monica Potter) is a woman who is none too happy or trusting after a broken romantic relationship. Through the encouragement of families and friends, she enters the dating world with mixed and sometimes funny results.

Why did I like this movie? First up, fun performances by Anthony LaPaglia, Harold Ramis, Gael Garcia Bernal, Henry Thomas and Julie Christie. Second, it has one of the most romantic scenes in my many years of movie watching. Third, aside from their performances, the actors mentioned above are pretty darned sexy in this movie.

The low points? One of the "dates" segments is more boring than the rest and, though, it's necessary to explain Lucy's transformation, the pacing and the writing in those sections dragged the film down a bit.

In spite of its unevenness, I do recommend this to those who are fans of romantic comedy. The lessons Lucy learns are truly part of the sometimes yucky, sometimes romantic dating scene.
