Review of H Story

H Story (2001)
An extraordinary way to turn a failure into a magnetic film
30 April 2003
I haven´t seen Hiroshima, mon amour, which this film refers to. Now I want to see it, although a friend told me it is boring. That´s what some people who saw H Story thought, but to me me it had an evolving attractive effect.

From the first scene you are inside the shooting of the pretended remake, with Suwa talking to actors. This will always active voyeuristic inclinations, but we are talking of an especially conflictive shooting: cause Suwa wants to repeat scenes exactly, and because the Hiroshima tragedy lies underneath. He himself is questioned by a writer of his motivations, and shows his lack of answers. So when beautiful and tormented Beatrice Dalle reaches a dead end, he turns the focus to pseudo documentary footage of the actors around Hiroshima. And then, with the language barrier making communication more difficult, we see them trying to find human contact in a devastated landscape. The director of the Buenos Aires independent film festival call it a masterpiece. Maybe he exagerated, but maybe not.
