Review of The Music Man

The Music Man (2003 TV Movie)
6/10
Not Great but Not Bad Either
19 February 2003
"The Music Man" is one of my favorite shows, both on stage and on screen. I was excited about this remake and even had a little party with my other theater friends to watch it. Overall it was very enjoyable. Not as good as the original but it had it's moments. Matthew Broderick was passable as Professor Harold Hill, not outstanding like Robert Preston but not horrible either. Kristen Chenowith was wonderful as Marion, on par with the great Shirley Jones. I was dissapointed in both Mayor Shinn and his wife played by Victor Garber and Molly Shannon. Garbor is very talented but was wasted in this roll and played it too seriously as did Shannon. I wanted the goofy buffoons we're used to seeing. The subtle changes to the staging and story showed that at least they weren't just trying to make a carbon copy. I own the original version on DVD but will keep this on tape.
