Hard-hitting movie but still too graphic
28 April 2004
A wonderful and realistic depiction of Christ's last hours. And yet, too brutal. Too much blood and gore. Am not generally squeamish but the scourging scenes were a bit too much to bear.

Brilliant acting by everybody. Monica Bellucci was a bit too sexy to be Magdalene though. Background score brilliant too.

The best scene was the flashback sequence when Mary rushes to help Jesus when he stumbles while carrying the cross. Scene shifts to the past when Mary rushed to her young child's aid after he stumbles and falls. My vote for the most heart-wrenching scene.

Did not find Mel Gibson anti-Semitic at all. In fact, the Roman soldiers are the ones who seem to 'enjoy' Christ's sufferings the most.

Incidentally, James Caviezel accidentally got whipped twice - so he did have to go through an iota of the pain Jesus must have felt. Anyways, do go watch the film - at least once.
