Lady Georgie (1983–1984)

An Anime classic!
24 October 2004
Australia, 19th century. Georgie, a young, teenage blond girl , doesn't know that she has been adopted by the family with which she lives in one farm. She is actually a daughter of one lost Australian convict and her step mom doesn't like her. Her "brothers", Arthur and Abel, have fallen in love with her since they entered adolescence. And that makes their mother furious. Evidently, Georgie goes to England because she has fallen in love with a young duke, Lowel. Abel and Arthur follow her after their mother dies...

Just like "Lady Oscar" ( aka "Versailles no Bara" ), "Sen-nen joo" or "Sailor Moon", "Lady Georgie" is also an beautiful anime classic, concentrating on themes of friendship, loyalty and love. For me, this anime is pure nostalgia. It portrays characters full of love and honesty, it's not ashamed of emotions and has a very smooth structure although its sometimes pathetic and clumsy ( the open ending in which Abel and Arthur suddenly "give up" upon Georgie as their love interest is weak ). The first episodes, in which the 3 main characters are kids, is somehow just for kids, but when they grow up and enter adolescence the plot thickens and transforms into something beautiful and mature.

--------

The story does fall sometimes into the trap of being a soap opera, yet that only increases the intensity of the plot twists. Also, many scenes are wonderful. In one, Georgie is taking clothes from Abel to wash them and thinks thats normal- while Abel is embarrassed standing in underwear in front of her because he knows she is not his real sister. In the other one, on some big ceremony, Georgie calls the duke Lowel names so that he can turn his face to her. He does, but everyone in the crowd starts staring at her- and her mother says quietly: "She...is not my real daughter..."
