Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior
12 February 2005
Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior, is a Thai film with English subtitles. The film takes place in a village in Thailand, where an evil businessman cuts the head off of the village's Buddha statue (named Ong-Bak) and takes him for his boss. The village is very upset to have it gone and fears that it will bring them back luck and they need it back before they can have a special ceremony. A young man named Ting, volunteers to travel to Bangkok, to get the head back from the man who stole it. In Bangkok, Ting meets up with his cousin Humlae, who gets Ting, to fight in several fights to win him money and then agrees to help him find the head. Along the way they have to battle gangs in the city and more fighting matches till they finally get the head. Winner of The Orient Express Award for Prachya Pinkaew (the film's writer, director and producer) at The Catalonian International Film Festival and The Action Asia Award at The Deauville Asian Film Festival. Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior, has a very simple story and there really isn't a lot to the film other than some very nice looking fight scenes with good choreography but there is some humour mixed in and the film is full of action and is never boring. I would have liked to have had a little more of a complex story but I guess the film wants to be entertaining and that is what it comes out being. Overall an entertaining movie that looks good and will certainly impress martial arts fans and action film fans alike.
