I'll watch any movie that stars Lorre and Greenstreet (if you liked this, try The Mask of Demetrios). This is a movie that the TCM channel endlessly recycles at 3 a.m., so I didn't have high expectations, but I was gripped. The screaming landlady is a bit of a bore, but even she turns out to have a soft heart and a secret (and it's not just her drink problem). The girl who plays the musical hall artiste is excellent, as is Paul Cavanagh, a handsome B grade actor of the time. Only flaws: "London" is perpetually shrouded in fog (oh well, adds atmosphere and saves on sets), and some of the "English" characters are unexpectedly Irish.
