Review of Trash

Trash (1970)
6/10
Unscripted Artifice

Just 'cause you let the actors come up with their own words doesn't make your movie more real. You've contrived a situation, selected locations, and predetermined your cast, which all pretty much rules out unfiltered reality. And just 'cause you're not concerned or aware of production values doesn't qualify your movie as art. But "Trash" has a lot of shock, grit, and attraction - like a circus side show, or a fatal accident involving a carload of Hooters girls. Absurdist Tragicomic Pantomime. It wants to be a serious meditation on the excesses of society, but covers its ass with self conscious silliness. Some of the 'grit' is very extreme - needles in arms and such - as is some of the attraction. Joe is very hot and Holly is fascinating. But it's not nearly as repulsive as it wants to be. That's 'cause you have to really care about a characters to be repulsed, and I just simply didn't really care about anyone for more than a few moments at a time. It's interesting as an example of a rather unique and innovative approach to film making, but that's not much praise. It could have been a lot better, a lot real-er.
