A movie to remember
16 March 2007
In the summer of 1942, I was 10 years old. My father was in the army and my mother, older sister and I were living out of our car following him around the country. At this time he was stationed at Westover Mass. In the small town near the post, mother was looking for an affordable place for a corporal's family to live. The town had one small movie house. It showed a double feature all day, and the same program ran for a week. Mother would pack me a sack lunch, give me a dime to pay my admission and take me to the movie early in the morning, picking me up in the evening after house hunting. That week the featured films were "This Gun For Hire" and "Bullets for Bandits" with Tex Ritter. I can't remember anything about the western, but I have never forgotten "This Gun for Hire". After 65 years, I can remember the movie like I saw it yesterday. Good story, I cried during certain scenes. Guess you would say it made a lasting impression on me. Oh, we never did find a place to live. we could afford.
