German Gore And Tentacles...
7 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
As I've noted before in other reviews, I'm not a particularly big fan of the German "ultra-gore" films, as most of them are so poorly made as to be completely laughable. Ittenbach is hit or miss with me, I hate Schnaas with a passion, and Fipper is one-for-two in my book, being that I hated the atrociously retarded DAS KOMABRUTALE DUELL but thought that OSTERMONTAG had some very decent moments, and I've only seen one of Timo Roses' films which was OK. As I usually can't get in the mood to watch German gore these days with the many disappointments I've had with the bulk of them - DAMONENBRUT is my first foray in Bethmann territory. Honestly - I didn't hate it. It wasn't anything special by any means, but it seemed to have a bit more ambition to it than I've seen from similarly budgeted films.

The storyline of DAMONENBRUT is pretty incomprehensible to me, as my copy is in German language only with no subs/dubs - but it basically seemed to be about some demon that tentacle rapes hapless female victims (a la most any hentai film out there...) and then said victims become demons themselves. There seemed to be some sort of kidnapping scheme involved in all this, and then some military group gets involved at the end, and there is a showdown between kidnappers, military guys, and demons...

Overall, DAMONENBRUT delivered on some levels. A solid bit of explicit female nudity (which is ALWAYS a plus...), including some explicit tentacle-insertion which proves to me that Bethmann ain't scared to bring the "goods". I'm also surprised that a few of the women that were "abused" in the film were actually quite attractive - this is rare in these zero-budget German efforts. There's a good bit of gore, but most of it is nothing special, except for a few choice scenes. The demon makeup is a bit goofy looking, but works for the most part. Plot is hard for me to judge, cuz I couldn't really make heads or tails out of most of it due to the language issue. I'd say that if you dig low-budget SOV films that contain explicit nudity and a decent helping of gore, then DAMONENBRUT is probably a safe bet for you. Otherwise, I'd say to skip this one altogether...6/10
